A Kansas City Journal reporter got the following from Col. Ingersoll while in that city: "Don't ask me anything about re ligion or poiitics," he said pleasantly "I have Bimply been to New. Mexico An lonal rmainaaa And havA ntorvned off here to lecture and to see many ICONNELL & KOBLITZ, old friends 1 have here. VV e leave tomorrow for Chicago, and I lecture in Indianapolis Sunday night We have greatly enjoyed our short stay here and Jiave renewed many pleasant acquaintances." "What do you think of Dr. Park- . hurst's methods of purifying the moral atmosphere of New York?" was asked. "Well, if you won't lot me off," replied the colonel, "I suppose I must give my opinion. It is this, and you can draw vour own inferences: If Christ had disguised himself and visited the house of the woman to whom he said: 'Go and in no more' had taken' one of his disciples with him, and had then complained to the chief of police or to the high priest and had the woman sent to prison, I do not think he would have added to his reputation." Col. Ingersoll said, in answer to the Question. "What is the trend of modern thought?" "Away from creed and dogma, away from inspired books and mira cles, away from old mistakes and crimes and idiotio ideas, away from hate and hell, from Jehovah and all the savage gods. Science is the only savior and humanity the only reli gion." Commenting on the action of the quadrennial Methodist conference at Omaha in deciding that "laymen" does not and never did include wo men, the famous oratcr said: "I am glad of it. I think they will soon see that the church is of no use to them A religion in which woman does not occupy the highest place is a poor affair. A man's religion is hardly worth talking about. Let us hope that the women will take their re venge. "About politics? Oh, that makes no difference. This country is like a prosperous cigar and tobacco store It makes but little difference what wooden Indian stands in front." And more on the burning question as to Blaine or Harrison, Cleveland or Hill, reciprocity or tariff reform, the foreign policy of the present ad ministration, the eloquent colonel said nothing. Colonel Ingersoll solved the ques tion as to whether men or women write the better fiction. This ques tion is being discussed by the auth' ors and artists at the Midland, and this is what he said on the subject: "Taking only the present time into consideration. I think that Ouida is the greatest writer of fiction living man or woman. There have been few even equal to this great writer, I think that women are as great in tellectually as men. When they get away from superstition they will as tound and civilize the world." Tom Catron may or may not be a candidate for delegate to congress. On this point we are not advised, l.ut our ouinion is that he will no be, Mr. Catron is a very able man and he is perhaps tricky and resent ful, bnt his personal integrity has never been ouestioned and if he should get to congress no particular harm would be done. In tho states we occasionally have an autumnal day when ilitie is just a tinge of frostiness in the air and a vast Bea ot Mtnliglit through which the earth exultingly plungea: not a cloud in the sky, scarcely a breath of wind Stirling tho dust heaps, when effort of mind and muscle has no limit. In New Mexico tho land of all lands where "it is always afternoon," such days are the rule, not the exception; and no other nook 111 New Mexico lias so delightful a climate at all seasons ot the year as .Las Vegas Hot Springs. From November to April scarcely a day passes during which the sun does not shine brilliantly and continuoiiHly. iJuring the summer months, whei lower countries are sweltering iu the heat, there is the same genial warnuh and glow without the enervating effect cef exces sive humidity. Tho average mid day winter temperature is from 60 to GO degrees Fahrenheit. Iu BUintiier the highest flight of, the thermometer rarely exceeds 80 degrees at noon, and the average for that hour is only 75. Tho altitude (7,000 feet above the sea), the picturesque valley, the high, pine covered mountains, the even temperature, and warm, dry air, combiuo to make this a favorite resort for tourists and an ideal place for invalids. Las Vegas Hot Springs is located on the sotheastcrn slope of tho San ta Ferango of tho ltocky mountains, six miles from the thrilty tily oLas Vegas. There are upward of forty hot and cold tprings, the water fom the beet of them being conducted in pipes to a largejand handsome bath house of modern construction. Almost all forms of ehrouio disease yield to tho curative effects of theso wonderful waters. It is not claimed nor expected that everybody will be made well. It is coniidently asserted that where there is anything left to build upon good results almost always follow a thorough course of treatment at the Hot Springs, and some re markable cures have occurred. Persons who have failed to receive relief elsowhere for rheumatism, catarrh, lung trouble and diseases of tho blood aro invited to try tho great New Mexico sanitarium. Skilled physicians are always in attendance. A branch lino of tho Atchison, Topeka it Santa Fo railroad connects the city with the springs. Five daily passenger trains each way render it easy ot accens from Las Vegas. Telegraph and telephone lines give ad ditional communication with the outside world. But the chief feature of the place, aside from its pre-eminence as a resort for invalids, is the Montezuma Hotel, a commodious and massive structure of stone, crowning a slight eminenco near the Biatiou. It may be doubted by those who know nothing of western push and enterprise, but here, in tho very heart of old-Spain-in-new-America, is tho finest wat ering place hotel west of the Alleghenies. Perhaps there are a few others that aro larger they are not many. Certainly none aro more satisfying to the eye or more restful to tho tired, dusty, worn-out traveler. Largo, handsome rooms, a fine cuisine, a commanding location and a careful cater ing to tho wants of all guests mako the Montezuma hotel peculiarly suita ble as a stopping place for transcontinental tourists via tho Santa 1' e route and for all classes of rest, pleasure and health seekers the country over.
