Foggy weather caused the disaster. though her engines were not working. and she did not strike hard; consequently the damage may not be great. We had the pleasure yesterday of meeting Hon. A. F. Learned agaln. who has been in Alaska some eight or nine months employed as book keeper for the Treadwell Mining 00. Mr. Learned has a good situation, but does not specially care to return to in as the country up there is so isolated and so disagreeable to live in. The finances of Hnyti ap ear to be in a worse condition than tiiose of of the Hawaiian islands. The au thorities arbritrarily reduced the value of the Mexican dollar to 60 cents. but to avoid a revolution they raised the value to 70 cents. The country is plastered all over with mortgages to foreign bondholders,_ and the party of reform wants to in dulge in wholesale repudiation. The result will probably be that one of the foreign Governments which has loaned its coin will try to absorb the republic. Work has not yet been resumed in any collieries at Wellington or Nan-n aimo. The miners are having mass meetings and are making an efl'ort to ascertain the best menus to provide against such disasters. Another public meeting will be held to-mor— row night to hear a report of the committee. The imtuest will be re sumed to-doy. T e miners are naturally somewhat nervous about returning to work in the mines when the one regarded as the best in the district. No. 5. was visited by such a fearful calamity. In Oregon. where a general elec~l tion occurs in June, several candi dates for congressional honors are already in the field. Mr. Hermann wants to succeed himself and Mr. C. W. Fulton. of Astoria, Judge Olms tead and Mr. Glen. 0. Holman, of Baker county. and Mr. J. C. Leisure. of Pendleton. are other republican candidates. On the democratic side Mr. T. C. Hyde of Baker county: and Mr. J. M. Siglin are candidates. The greatest stake in this election, however. is a United States senator to succeed Mr. Dolph. President Cleveland, in his strug gle for reuomination has clearly made a powerful enemy in New York in Gov. Hill, who seems to be able to divide the state committee with Cleveland. Hill is a shrewder and energetic man than Cleveland and is likely to make serious ttouble when New York chooses her delegation to the democratic national convention.
