The Spokane Chronicle, in specu lating as to tne route to be followed by the Manitoba in buildiLg west from Montana, says: “It is asked, how will he get there? By the most direct line possible. There is much of the characteristic of the mole in Mr. Hill. He had rather go under ground than over the earth’s surface whenever it pr. - sents any barrier. His plan is to Sc— cure the shortest line and the easiest grades possible to the Pacific. He will tunnel where other-3 would Switch back. He builds for the future, ft-l‘ posterity, and not for the time being. Our theory is that he will build his main transcontinental line from Great Falls up the Matias an-l across the Flathead country ink) and through this territory to Seattle. His object is to secure a heavy freight haul at intermediate points to pay dividends. To this end he will build branches to supply the main artery ofhis system. Audit is a question whether he will tap Spokane With the main line or with a branch, but certain it is that he will not give it the go by. He will not slight Spo inane with her million dollars of traf fic in the very mfantcy of her devel~ opment. when she is the very proto— type of Minneapolis, in which he has large investments and in whose fu~ tare he has so much faith. It is a Bart ofeur theory that he will build is main line midway between the Northern Pacxtic and the Canadian Pacific. and connect with the Seartle. 1 Lake Shore .3; Eastern at Waterville, 1 which will in the meantime havej built to Spokane and into Idaho through the Walla Walla and Pa louse countries. thus tapping tn.- the great wheat belt. and connecting; with the Mentana Central Lrnnch. { which will build from Butte. thin-ugh § Anaconda, Phillipsburg, flllt! aunts : the Bitter Root valley, over the St ! It is npparcnt that thL-rc would be a sort of perpetual daylight at the center of such a. congregation of suns. Let us see about how bright this fight would he. Of :ourse-our hltlrpofiiflliolls planet might re ceive from tliu .\llll to which it belonged as brilliant n daylight us our sun gives to us, but what would he the illumination 01 its nights, or, in otiicr words, of that side of it which was. turned away from its sun? Zuliucr has cstinmtt-d the light (if the sun to be (318,000 times as great its that of the full moon. This. upon the esti mate of the amount of Sirius’ light as compared with the sun‘s that we have adopted, would give the moon about 8,000 times its much light as Sirius. rerun. To H'FTEEX .\tonxs. Since each of the stars in the cluster has 1,400 times the light of Sirius, at 9,- 000,000,000 miles distance, and there are a dozen of them within that. distance of the center, it fullun's that these dozen stars wi‘J shed abm'e twice as much light. upon A world in the center of the cluster as the full moon :entls .to us. And since the light received from a. body “tries inversely as; the Square of its distance, while the number of sin-h bodies arranged in the roughly spherical way we have supposed would increase directly as the square of their distance from the center, it. is clear that the amount of light received from the whole cluster would he as many times the amount l‘t't'lht'tl from the twelve, stars nearest the center, as the radius of the cluster exceeds£l‘,()oU,ooo,ooo miles. This would be about fifteen times, and so the total amount of light shed upon the center would he fifteen times the amount, she-l from the first twelve stars, or ahout thirty times the amount that the full moon pours upon the earth. But only half the stars of the cluster would be above the horizon at once, and so the illn mination of the night sky on our imagin ary world Would he fifteen times as bright as the light of the full moon upon the earth. The number of stars visible to us with the unaided eye on a clear night is not over 3,000, and the great majority of these are so taint that they require some atten tion to be seen at all. How contemptihle, then, is the starry tirmmnent presented to us in comparison with the glorious heavens in this sun cluster of Hercules, where more than twice as many stars as we can see blaze nightly with a radiance so brilliant that the faintest of them are six times as bright. as the greatest star in our sky—New York Sun. A Great Victory A Terrible Case of Scrofula Cured by Hood’s Sarsaparilla “ In the winter of 1879 I was attacked with Scrotum in one of the most aggravating forms. At one time I had no loss than thirteen large abscesses over and around my neck and throat. continually exuding an oflcnsive mass of bloody matter disgusting to behold, and almost intolerable to endure. It is impossible to fully describe my sufferings. as the case was complicated with Chronic Catarrh. After three years of misery, having been treated by three physicians, I was worse than ever. Finally, on the recommendation 0! W. J. Huntley. druggist, oi Lockport. I was induced to try Hood’s sampariiln. And now, after having taken twelve bottles, within the last twelve» months. the scrofulous eruptions have entirely ceased, and the abscesses have all disappeared. exvept the unsightly searsnvhlch are daily bvcomm ' 'smaller by degrees, and beantiiu ly less.’ t 1 do not know Wat it may have done for others, but _I do know that in in? case, lloogl's fiarsapaniia has proved an e eetive specmc indeed. .As an evxdence or my ratitudo I send these [acts unsolicited. and? am ready to verily the authenticity of _this cure. l-y Jiersoual correspondence with any one who _ oubts it."
