Mr. Henry Bucey, publisher of the Northwest Horticwltun(list—wind by the way a good journal—and president of the Washington Horticultural society. has a large and perfect collection of specimens of various varieties of the labove noted kind of Puget Sound fruit, preserved in glass jars, which he invited the Journal to examine the other day. If Mr. Bucey‘s collection was (lis‘ rlayed in a glass cabinet came in the i‘ucomo hotel, Hotel Fife, Chamber of Commerco, or some other place where tourists and others who Come to see the country, could examine it. it would forcibly illustrate more than words, the fine capabilities of our soils. climate. seasons, etc. Every one from abroad who saw it would tell of its wonders on their return. —Real Estate Journal. -————-m——— Tariff Refomers. The following is the language of Hon. John Fitch in one of his bril lient California speeches: The tarifi‘reformers of to day are dwellers in Dreamland, as were their fathers before the-m. They are akin to the logicians who once proposed to extend the area of freedom by en larging the boundaries of slavery. ‘ They are allies of the statesmen who: once preposed to make the United: States of America a great nation by providing for the peaceable secession of the States. They are followers of the financiers who once proposed ;to liquidate the national debt 0y is isuing a practically unlimited quan— ltity of paper promises not to pay. They are associates of the [alriots who arranged for making elections in the South peaceable, though not pure, by the simple process of per mitting the black man to Vote as be pleased and then counting his votes as they pleased. These gentlemen. with a record in favor of slavery, and in favor of secession. and in favor of every fantasy in finance and every folly in philosophy. and every phase of fool politics that the land has known for thirty years— thesegentle men now come blithely forward and propose to make the loborcr prosper— ous by reducing his living expenses 51 per wcek and reducing his wages $3 per wool; [laughter]. and they calmly assume that any reduction in the price of manufactured goods caused by tarifl‘ reduction. will not diminish the wages of the Workers, but that the loss will be bourne cxh l clnsively by capital. __ .....w___ l Making all necessary allowance for l lies. hot winds and chinch hugs, ‘ Kansas will tun p out 20,000,000 more bushels of corn this season than was ever before raised in the stats in a LSingle year. The owl moth of Brazil measures a. foot across the wings. “‘here do they come from, these many difl'ercnt little creatures? \Vhen the second 1:0;1) expedition was made in search of a northwmt passage in 1827-29 a new species of eolias, afterwards called boot hii, was found in a. few specimens, the only ones known to this day, one of which came later into possession of Strecker’s collection. It is the only sample of the species in America. Three of the great papilio antinmchns, from equatorial Africa, can be seen here. Only about a dozen are known. Suites of the golden crmsus and lydius from Ilalmeheira the curious Parnassus butterflies from 18,000 feet elevation in the Himalayas and other mountains; the enormous cossus from Australia, which are eaten by tho nativa; the gorgeous rhaipheus flies from Moder gnscar without a rival in niatchless colors. Then come monster curiosities, half male and half female; those of one wing, partly of one sex and partly of another sex; 111- binos, hybrids, melanos and extra. winged and other freaks. Indians, lisquimnux, explorers, travelers and missionaries have all helped to this wonderful collec tion or butterflies. ‘ MANY CURIOUS srzcmzxs. Among the curious specimens may be mentioned the “bee moth,” so named from its exact resemblance to the bee or wasp. He is a very counterfeit of the honey making insect. What a freak is the Diketicns pair! The female has no wings, no legs, never 89H! light nor takes food. The winged gentleman goeth as he pleaseth. Then look at the eccentric resemblance of the “anchor moth." 0n the creamy but! color a black anchor is marked. like a tat tooed arm with the tar symbol. Here also .8 a resident. of the Amazon river forests, known to the natives as “eightyoeightsfi' because of the figures 88 marked on the _Vilrery white ground of the under side of its: hind wings. Then there is the curious 310 th from Sierra Leone, in \Vest Atrica, known as the “Argus moth." It isre— nnrknble for the unparalleled length of she tails of the hind wings in the male. l‘hcn there is the world famed “dead leaf . butterfly” at China, India and the Pacific ‘ islands. When the wings are open it has .3 surface of grayish blue crossed by an 0131383 band; but when closed, as the animal is at. rest, the resemblance to a. dead Lent is pcrte ct. The day butterflies number 8,000 species; the night flies are ten times a 3 man?- To attempt a description of the bewil dering effect as case after case is drawn out from its hiding and samples of the 70,- 000 specimens are displayed under the gas light is simply futile. The endless variety of their forms, the gorgeousness of their harmonious dress, have no equal among any living thing of the domain of nature. \V’hat is pretty in emerald or sapphire, what is brilliant in diamond or ruby, what is rich in plume of bird or leaf of flower, what is glorious in rainbow or sunset—all can be found in this array of insect crev ation dazzling. glistening, gayljr disport ing under the flash of light. The process of preserving than is also an art, and a somewhat tedious task. They are sent from distant ent< )molpgists in labeled paper wraps, secured in boxes. They are in no shape; they must be put into a wooden press of particular design, must be poised on pins and rendered plia ! able in a moist sand jar and. then be er- I ranged with mathematical precision in 1 their respective cases. Exchanges am I made by the lepidopterists the world over, I which go the rounds, and specimens of insects are given and taken as the collec- I tions may lack kinds. Cocoons even are 3 received from distant lands and are nursed ' into life a. year afterwards—Reading (Pa) I Cor. New York \Vorld.
