East Sound. San Juan County. Oct. 2. —'l'he lime industry of the islands is on the increase. New companies are stnn ing and values are on at steady rise. At Roche Harbor the nannfacture is being rapidly developed. Two years ago the Taé-imn company. who purchzmd the Works from Scurr Brno. gave 840.000. Today the works could not he bought for probably less than $200,000. this com— pany has increased the number of draw kilns from two to six, three of which are constructed purily of iron on a new prin ciple. and three more. of the acme pat tern. me in course of erection. The wharves and buildings are all of a very substantial type. About 50 men are em ploy ed, the capacity being about 6(1) barrels per day. At Penrlyn. East Sound. Bowen Bros. & Jamiason, another Tacoma firm. are rapidly opening up their ledges of lime and iron. They have erected perhaps the finest stone draw kiln in the country (which is now burn— ing) a very substantial wharf, warehous es and other buildings. The iron. which is a high grade of limonite, promises very well. and improves rapidly as the vein is developed. The first cargo of ore was shipped to Irondale last week. Mr. Cornell. the San Francisco live millionaire, is fast developing his San Juan property—the old Mchrdy ledge —-sud will probably. as soon as the law suit with the Roche Harbor Company is settled. erect several kilns. _ _ ‘ _ The McCurdy Lime Co. at East Sound are burning two pot-kilns and making a very fine grade of lime. They are erect ing a large wharf, and their buildings are rapidly approaching completion. The major portion of lime ledges in the ar chipelago are situated around East Sound sud generally over Orcas island. At Point Laweence, Wm. Bird has a large force of men erecting pot-kilns and bunkers for shipping flux and limestone and a new company is new developing a valuable ledge close to the East Sound postotlice. and right on the water. It is strange that Seattle capital does not take hold of this and the marble industry. ms ram-r remnant. The truit industry at East Sound and throughout Orcas island is still on the rise; 10-acre tracts are being sold as rapidly as they are put on the market. The trnit harvest this year is a heavy one. apples still wholesaleing on the wharf at 65 cents. A large quantity is being shipped to Vancouver. Van Gohren & Van Ssnt‘s nursery is doing quite a large business. and they seem to be making a good name by sending out firsbclass trees. The fruit industry at this point is only in its infancy. The day is not far distant when Orcas island will be one vast fruit-ranch, farmed in 10 and 20-wre tracts. The crops on all ‘the islands have been good. The far jmers on San Juan and Lopez islands ‘are well satisfied with the season. . The oatmeal factory at Argyle has put 1 in a machine for making rolled cats. 1 vtsrrons. 1 Mr. Peter Kirk, Mr. Williams, and l others recently spent three or four days ‘ at Friday Harbor. The very Rev. Dean Watson, the Rev. .\l. D. “Moon and Rev. L C. Taylor (the new rector at Port Townsend) spent two weeks at East Sound with Rev. Mr. Gray. the tall deanery meeting being held during their visit. Messrs. Wil snn nnd Taylor were so charmed with the beauties of that lovely inland see, that they have determined to build sum— mer cottages close to Emanuel rectory. » Horas. Last week the Eliza Anderson picked up two men from an overturned schoon— er.
