At Cleeluln alone \‘nst quantities of coal exist. and within two milnsof the town vast. luonntaim of iron of the. finest quality. have bet-x 5 exposed. The territorv 1.21" 22mm of buth Coal ...nl n'ou than l’ennaylvnniu has within the sumo arm. and she has vastly more tvrritory than the Key— stone state. All that is needed in either Oregon or Washington to pro duce coal and iron enough for the world is capital, enterprise and oper— ation to place these staple minerals on the market. '\Vhatcom lake, situated three miles east of the town of \Vhatcom, is 1}; to 2 miles wide. and 12 miles long. and in places is 400 feet deep. It is situated at an altitude of 300 feet above Puget Sound. From it flows 8 large creek which empties into Bellingham Bay at Whatcom. This lake will evidently afl'ord an abundant supnly of pure water for the town of Vhatcom. When the rainy season commences in October myriads of red fish rise up from the bottom of the lake and run up stream to spawn. They are never seen at any other time. They very closely resemble the real fish of the lakes of Idaho, which natural histo~ ry pats down as a distinct variety of fish. One of their peculiarities is that they never bite at bait. set on a hook. They are very delicious.—E.r~ aminer. A Press reporter's attention was called this morning to a multitude of men swarming about the oflice of Chas. Reed, and wending his foot steps in that direction he found that fifty men were to be sent to Fidelgo, to commence trackslaying on the railroad between Fidelgo and Ana~ cortes. This road is being built by the Oregon Improvement Company. The work of surveying and clearing the right~of—way is now completed, and the track—laying will be pushed with great vigor until it is completed. This road is hailed with joy by the settlers along the line and in the vi~ cinity. The road penetrates a vast farming tract. (which, owing to this improvement, will enable the farmers to get their products to the Sound and on their way to the best market on the Coast. Mr. Reed expects still larger orders from these quar ters. The road will probably be completed in the course of a few months—Seattle Press. It is evident that the editor of the Washington Farmer is trying to get up a boom for Ship Hat-tor. He says: There are just two points in discussing the availability of the several places on Puget Sound for the international ruling metropolis, which no one can gainsey. It is 200 miles less from the wheat fields of ‘ Eastern Washington and Western Idaho, via Skagit Pass. to Fidalgo‘ island and the Liverpool vessel, than 1 by the present line of the N. P. R. R. 1 to Tacoma; and it costs S7OO more tol load a wheat ship at Tacoma. than at: Fidalgo. for the reason that therel must be figured towage. wages ofl crew, interest on money invested in‘ cargo going and coming. insurance of vessel and cargoes, loss of time. etc. The additional cost for a vessel to go to Tacoma, and the fact that the Tacoma route is 200 miles long— er than the Skagit route. make an unanswerable argument in favor of Ship Harbor on Fidalgo island. and demonstrates to any- candid mind that if one trunk line of railway goes to Fidslgo, all trunk lines must go to Fidalgo, for the sin] 16 reison that none of them can maie a snc~ cessful terminus where the cost to load acargo of wheat will amount to SI,OOO more than if loaded at Fidal -B- Dan Harris, at Fairhaven. is get ting ready to unload his property there, by reporting that Nelson Ben nett has ofl'ered him $75,000 for cer tain water front property, with a view to making Fairhaven the ter mines of his coal road This isan other example of the old adage‘ “Drowning men catch at straws." Nelson Bennett’s coal mines are in section 15, township 35 north range east of the “’illamette meridian. This meridian cuts through the her bor at Port l‘ownsend and a little west of Ship Harbor. Now, it is six miles across a township. The mines are three miles west of the eastern boundary of township live. and the Willamette meridian is five miles west of Ship Harbor. ’l‘herefuro. the distance from the mines to Ship liars bor is 2‘2 miles. or just the same dis— tance that Fairbaven is from Ship Harbor. The distance from the j mines to Fairhnven is 35 miles and the route is over Chuekunut Moun— j tain. In other words Mr Bennett‘s mines are as near to the head of the 1 Straits of Fucn as Fairhaven is, yet} Mr. Harris '.Vnulil make people boJ lieve that Sir. Bennett would build 35 miles over a mountain just to get away from the initial point at Ship Harbor—the lie-ml of the straits“ which point all sen going vessels must pass. I have known .\lr. Beth nett a long: time. and never knew him to throw any money at birds. fishes nor town lot boomers.——L. R. Freeman, in Y akima Farmer.
