(ZJ j.j.'-:-aiiJ j - ASTOKIA. QUEZON FRIDAY... " MAT 19. 1S52 J.F IIALLOKA.N... ..Editor. The Astoria Land Grant. Sikce the meeting of the two political state conventions., we have! noticed nothing in the state press that would indicate that a grievous wrong was still being perpetrated upon this community, and, with the exception of some straight forward resolutions adopted by the Democratic county convention, which met here on the 26th ult., have seen no authoritative de nouncement of this fraud by any public body. With the claims of the Northern Pacific we have noth ing to do. If the county in gen eral can stand it, all right; but there is a forfeited land grant in this county that is a direct bar, a standing hiudranco to the pros perity of Astoria, that should be removed. It is a living, breathing curse; it says to the man that comes hero to settle, "Stand back! "We have no title, 'tis true, but we've got it so fixed that you can't get any cither." No mau wants to take too many chances, and, though soil, climate, Iqcation are all in hid favor, he very naturally says: "1 can't anora to lose good years in cultivating and improving land that I can get no clear title to," and he goes elsewhere. This is happening right here in Astoria overy day. Men come into our office that have been on this land for years, and though they hate to go, yet the dog-in-the-manger policy is so successful that they tore virtually forced. The beautiful argument has been used with us: "Well, if they don't like it, why do they come here?" Shame on a corrupt system of legislation that invites men to come, and promises them government land, and .then, by some hocus-pocus of legislation, permits a monopoly to hold it bv a shadowv title that is -imly. powerful by reason of its vagueness! The present stute of affairs is either right or wrong. If it be right to hold a great tract of country by virtue of a grant thai was long ainco forfeited; if it be right to discourage immigration and keep would-be settlers off such a lair portion of our national do main; if it be right to subvert all the principles of a republic end rear a plutocracy in this country, then it is right to steal by retail as well as by wholesale, to cut the throat of the midnight victim and fling his body to the outgoing tide, rob him of hi property and take his life. - We hear nothing about this from niiy quarter. With the one ex ception wii havo noted, both par ties seem willing that the dead steered by the dumb shall go up ward with the llnort. the mo mentous question of vi hit shall be able to dolq out the political pap for the next four yeas is of over shadowing importance. It makes all thi difference in the world who is to govern at th magnificent annual salary of $l,."iOO, but it is not of the slightest consequence whether the plighted faith of the national government itself shall be broken at' the bidding of a set of speculators whose desire to grab is only limited by their abilitv to rental u. Should not be Allowed . Congressman Page, of Cali fornia, is now hefore the House yith a bill for the removal of the tariff from bibles piinteil in for eign countries. If wc of this dbast are to meet all the Chinese that come, with bibles and spelling books, as some of the sentimental ists say we should, the tariff on these articles should most certainly be removed. "WshouId not be compelled to buy thoso necessa ries of a .New England bookseller who can charge two prices on ac count of the tariff for" the protec tion of Eastern capitalists and traders. There can be no valid objection to the receipt of free bibles as long-as the pious Massa.- chusetts politicians insist upon the free and unlimited receipt of all Qlxc Statta steiau China, by "we uns," over hero on tho Pacific side. It is not con sistent on the part of those philan thropists to insist that h tax must be maintained to keep out cheap bibles, and yet tho heathen who need them the most "be encouraged . to come over here. But on the Oth.er hand, the enterprising bible manufacturers of this free and glorious country should not be forced to compete -with the poorly clad, half-starved bible makers of the effete and crumbling monarch-f ,Vs of the old world. Mr. Patre's ! action could not have been in spired by patriotism, nor have for its motive any religious zeal. Pa cific coast politicians are not a godly crew: they have never been noted for their christiarj activity in spreading the truth by moans of bibles of home manufacture among benighted heathens, and it ill be comes them to favor any sunh horrible enterprise that must if-J suit disastrously to our monopoliz ing brethren of the East. Another appalling consideration is "Where will this thing end?" The proposition to allow foreign bibles to be brought into this country without parment of du ties is probably an entering wedge designed to split asunder our en tire protective system. Once open the doors ot our custom house to British bibles, and uc open the gates to all sorts of reprehensible pranks. Some other pious congressman will want to put Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Pro gress," or Baxter's "Saint's RVt," or Jonathan Edwards' sulphurous diction on the free list. Then a demand will be made to let in a whole catalogue of moral and re ligious publications to the infinite detriment and temporal ruin of our American manufacturers. It is Jesuitical: it is sinister: it is conspiracy. Our manufacturing interests are in danger. The statement that bibles should be cheap in order that more people can own and read them is just like the arguments that those ridicu lous fellows that advocate free trade would advance. It is more in sorrow than in anjrer we sav that Mr. Page who so admirably engineered the anti-chinese bill in tho House, is now deserving of serious reproof. It is most mon strous. Some rascally freo trade man has evidently poisoned the mind of our neighboring congress man. Let us hope that Mr. George shall not be similarly tainted. Fancy the fix we would be in were the telegraph to an nounce that the congressman from Oregon was in favor of allowing free bibles brought over from England! MISCELLANEOUS.
