J ASTORIA, OREGON: SATURDAY-.. MARCH 10, 18S3 'tm JL Telegraphic TeaU Undor the head of interesting telegraphy the JExcIianffe referred some days ago to a wonderful feat thattook place between Boston and Guymas over a circuit of 5, 500 miles. A still more wonder ful feat was performed between this city an,d Valencia Bay, Ire land, a few years ago, and we think was noticed in the papers at the time. A continuous circuit was made up betweon San Francisco and Heart's Content (about 4,500 miles), the cable landing on the American side. As a very deli cate instrument -is used to tele graph through the cable this cir cuit could not bo worked beyond the end of the cable, but a conver sation was held- between the op erator at the instrument in San Francisco and the one at Heart's Content, and then a request made to so how soon a reply could be had Irorn Ireland. The message! sent from here was as follews: 4lPo operator, Valencia Bay Ten crolook here; what time is it with you?" The reply came almost in stantiy as follews: "Six o'clock 5n th morning, and the maids are milking cows." From the time the message was started from the operator here until the reply was lecoivod did not exceed j tihrec minutes. The above extra ordinary feat took place under the immediate direction of Mr. James Gamble, who vouches for the cor rectness of tlie above. The dis tance to Valencia. Bay and hack mafcas about 3 3,000 miles. The difference in time between San Fraimitoo and London is about eWt hours.
