She had swallowed too much medicine by mistake and it required the united services of a skillful physician and tho entire night force of the hotel to summon her back from the shadowy shores of the unknown sea. She was much better yesterday and is doubtless out of immediate danger. About as plainly as it is possible to write the English language we want to tell Palmer & Key, of Portland, whose persistence in asking is only equalled by their inability to take "no' for an an swer that The Astobian doesn't want any of their truck called "plates," to use in this paper. Appearances aro often deceptive, but, nevertheless, they count for a great deal in society. A well dressed man or woman indicates good breeding and respectabil ity. Outside appearance has due effect on the public, to whom a more minute opportunity is not given to form a truer estimate of men and things. In this busy age the most successful way to at tract attention is by arresting the eye. Objects photographed on tho eye aro at once communicated to the brain, and generate thought and action. This fact is noticeable in children whose gaze is at onco arrested by pictures in books, and this mode of object teaching and con veying information is as successful with men and women who are, aftor all, but children of a larger growth. Publishers of newspapers and magazines find it profitable to cater to this predilection for something novel and unique, and hence the larger number of illustrated cuts and pictures which embellish their pages. Advertisements that attract the most attention aro of tho illustrated order, and, following out the idea, the stores which attract the largest outside multitude aro those whoso win dow displays are the most beautiful. Window dressing, especially with dry goods stores, is reduced to a lino art, and it is one that pays. This taste for em bellishing tho front of a store is no longer confined to largo towns and cities, but has extended with good results to other places. Merchants who look upon win dow decoration as a waste ol timo mako a mistake. Thoso who givo the matter duo thought, and seek to increase their trade through an appeal to the eye, find it n successful plan. A handsome show window indicates neatness and order in a store. Customers like to enter a store thiit is neat, cheerful and attractive. A handsomely dressed window is as much an object of gossip and attention as a village belle and beauty. lfj-ou doubt this just take a look at" tho windows in C. H. Cooper's store and noto tho atten tion that passers-b3- give them and you will agree with the above. A Front Konm to Kent Furnished or unfurnished at Mrs. Muxsox" ESooius to l.ct Hume's Building. About tho hotels and clubs the political outlook is tho chief topic. AH but the most enthusiastic partisans agree that ! thore arc such various and opposing ele ments at work that it is more difficult than usual to forecast tho chances. Both Euller and St. John are unknown quan tities, but hardly more so than the tariff question, the labor movement, the Irish defection and the "mugwump" bolt. But there is another unknown quantity at work in the person of Mr.. Belva Ann Lockwood. This novel candidate is act ively ennaired in tho campaign, and her cause even has a 'defection' led by Dr. Alan- Walker, who says she will not vote for any woman who parts her hfir in the middle, but declines to bifurcate her tri cycle. Apropos of Belva Ann, I am re minded of a little anecdote bearing upon her legal practice. The story goes that Mistress Lockwood was arguing a case f before Chief Justice Carter of the d3-: trict bench. The justice, after ILcUnmg with patience to her statement of the case. oerraled the denmrrer that sho had filed. Mistress Lockwood t hen made a motion in the case, which his honor summarily denied. Rising hurriedly, with aouio animal ion tho jierplexed attor ney remarked: ''1 should like to have vour honor's advice what to do next." Slowly and jwintedly tho witty chief jus tice rcpl'cd: '"Mistress Lockwood, tho court would advise yoa by all means to employ a lawyer." Tho irate counsellor rapidly disappeared with her bundle of papers, and was seen llying down tho slreot on her tricycle at a 2:10 gait trying to bent Maud S.'s record. From mountain, seaside, from houses and from chopping stores in northern cities, our people are returning in droves to their city residences. "Is it going to be a gay winter?" will soon be tho pro vailing social conundrum. Doubtless there will be about tho usual amount of gayety. and, though should Cleveland bo electc'd some bouses will be opened less freely, official entertainments have lately formed so small a part of tho sum total of the social round that the closing of all the 'vourt" houses would hardly be missed. Of whatever politics ono may be, all agreo that tho expiration of Mr. Arl bur's administration will b a great loss to the social world of tho national capital. The president is still tho guest of Sec retary Freliughuysen at Raritan, N. J. No intimation of the lime when he will return hero has yet been received al the White house. I think he is not likelv to arrive before tho 13th. Secretary Fre linghuysen has returned to his New Jer sey home, and will spend most of tho month of October there. Rumors arc llying thick and fast that tho president is to marry Miss Tilly Fre liughuysen, and the report seems to be believed in certain quarters. Such a marriage would certainly add much to tho social interest of tho Whits house enter tainments during the coming winter, and Miss Frelinghuysen is fitted to occupy the station which would be assigned to her. I heard an interesting bit of political information the other day in explanation of how the auburn-locked Tom Ochiltree got elected to congress. It has always been supposed that he "made the race" by money, but ray informant said "No that wasn't the vf&y of it. Of coarse there was money used, but that wouldn't have been enough. What really elected Tom was the Catholic vote, and I'll tell you how he got it. You know, of course, what a harum-scarum fellow Tom has always been. Well, what will you say when I tell you that Tom was elected to congress because he was a devout child of tho church! You see, when Tom was a j'oung fellow ho onco had for a tutor a man who afterward became a prominent official in the Catholic church. This man always had a fondness for his old pupil, and when Tom was nominated for congress, the sly fellow thought he might mako something out of tho rela tion. So he brushed up tho old acquain tance, made friends with tho bishop of the diocese, made a visit to a high digni tary of the church, which lasted two or three days, and was diligent in attenu auco at the church. To help matters along, as luck would havo it, Fjudlay, whom tho Democrats had nominated, was a Free Mason, and as a secret society man tho Catholics were down upon him. The upshot of it all was that tho word was quietly passed around that the bish op wanted to see tho man elected who was a good Catholic which his name it was Tom. Well, you know there is anj quantity of Catholics down on the Rio Grande, and that racket just did tho bus iness. So that is tho way Tom Ochiltree got elected to congress," concluded the narrator. Lawn tenuis parties are all the rage in Washington at this season, and our beau tiful streets and avenues are bordered at many points by tennis courts, where the soci.nl world is wont to disport itself un til the season of tcrpsichore begins. Lesox. The IIoo&'Nosc Salmon. Among the salmon now coming to market are a large number having long hooked noses and ferocious looking mouths armed with largo and sharp teeth. Thcfii fish arc males, aud with them aro n few females, apparently genu ino chinooks, plump, clean, silvery-looking fish. It has been thought that the hook-nosed fish mentioned above were a separate species, but from the fact that the are all males and are caught in com pany with females of tho chinook species, it is evident that the' belong to that va riety. Bat what a chaugo their long stay in fresh water has wrought. Their mis shapen head and dingy, battered bodies bear no resemblauco to tho plump, hand some chinooks caught in season. Their strong, sharp teeth would seem to dis prove the idea that salmon eat nothing dunug their stay in fresh water; but it may bo that these aro weapons to be used in guarding the eggs deposited by the females. Though the flesh of these un couth fish is of good color and many of them aro in fair condition, they cannot be considered as very suitable for food. Orcgonian. J I. llazic for the At-ed. SCENE AMONO (JLACIEHS. lliASKA A vast ico -field, the accumulation of ages, stretched back as far as the oyo could reach, or rosa still like seemingly limitless walls they met tho horizon. Ice bergs whose woudrous colorings and grotesque formations exceeded our wild est imaginings, surrounded us on all sidft. A huge blue pyramid, growing fainter towards the apvx where rested n mass of snowy whiteness, sailed slowly bv to bis followed by another, black ,-t the water line, growing bottle-green, lighter j olive, and then by some inexplicable ' transformation becoming tipped with a ' delicate turquoise. Pinacles, arches and ' domes in turn drifted- bj-, till tho speed of the silicon was checked, and wo fnnmi ourselves ready to drop anchor, while be fore us rose a vertical ice wall 300 feet in height and with a frontage of three and a half miles. Not daring to attempt a pen-picture. I quote the words of iluir, the state geologist of Califernia: "The whole front and brow of this majestic Riae;er i;i dashed and sculptured into a mazo of yawning chasms and crevices. and : to wilder aig variety of strange arcuuecuiKu ivriux appainng to the strangest nerves, but novel and beautiful beyond description. Clusters of glittering lance-tipped spires, gables and obelisks, bold outstanding bastions and plain mural cliffs adomed along the top with fretted cornice and battleraont, while every gorge aud crevasse, chasm and hollow were filled with light shim mering and pulsing in pale bluo tones of ineffable tenderness and loveliness." When at tho firing of a cannon huge masses of ice became detached and plnnged into the water with a force that throw the spray hundreds of feet in tho air, and even at tho distanco wo were, caused our steamer to sway violently, tho excitement culminated, and the cheers of our party mingled with the echoes of tho fall as tho distant crags sent them back to us. Wo were landed on shore and after almost tho entire afternoon spent climbing tho side moraine, looking back at our ship, an atom in the distance, we returned feeling the half had not been told us.
