The Astoeiax guarantees to its adver tisers the largest circulation or any newspa per published on the Columbia river. A bunch of keys, picked up in the post office last evening awaits an owner at this office. Owing to the illness of Rev. Dr. Garner, there will be no service in the Presbyterian church to-day. A school teacher is wanted at Knappton. One that can teach music is preferred. Apply to Balph Dyer, one of the directors. The Gas company's repairers are doinp all they can to bridge over the existing break, and expect to be able to furnish gas early thi3 week. The Journal says that Oysterville and Ilwaco need a resident physician. One that could practice on the penin sula would find a very profitable field. In 'SG the dog-killer's bill and the city printing bill was just the Fame. In '87 the city printing bills for the entire year amounted to $289.83: big business. Joggles says that if ho had seven children he'd only try to teach them one thing to close the door. It cer tainly -would be a sensible little piece of education. The Elmore Packing Co. has in corporated; capital stock SIG.OOO, di vided into 160 shares of S100 each; principal place of business Astoria; object, to pack salmon. Owing to floating ice in the Colum bia above here the night boat It. Ji. Thompson will not leave here for Portland to-night. Due notice will be given of the resumption of her trips. In Olympia the price of Oysters at wholesale is now Si per sack, with an upward tendency. The present price has been reached by gradual stages from 81.75 per sack at the beginning of the season. The Canadian Pacific Navigation company has contracted for the build ing of a S200.000 steamer for the Victoria-Vancouver route. The vessel will be steel, fast running, and will be built on the Clyde. Our Jewell correspondent under date of the Gth, writes that the weather is clear and cold, the ther mometer down to 10 above zero, without any snow and the roads so rough it is almost impossible to travel horseback. A bill to repeal section 2 of the act creating pilot commissioners on the Columbia river, so that the commis sioners shall not receive pay from the territory, passed the Washington ter ritory legislature under suspension of the rules last .Friday. Before a commission in lunacy yes terday was brought JSoyd Wright, who, being adjudged insane, will be taken to the Salem hospital to-night. He was sent up from here last Au gust, but being released returned, and now makes a second trip to that institution. Percy Metcalf died at Knappton yesterday morning, of consumption, in the 22nd year of his age. Deceased had been ill for a long time. He was a brother of Mrs. B. W. Eobson, of Knappton. The remains were yes terday embalmed and will be taken to California for interment The captain of tho British bark City of Carlisle reports that last Wednesday about 4 A. M., while on the way from San Diego, Cal., Wm. Rowbotham, one of the apprentices, aged 17, while aloft, fell, sustaining injuries in the head and body from the effects of which he died in a few Lours. A falling block struck the captain on the head, inflicting a pain ful, but not necessarily dangerons wound. In the list of wrecks and disaster of '86 and '87 that terrible north coast makes a dismal reeord, still more dis mal hv contrast with the Columbia river bar, across which, -with the wind blowing heavy from the south east, were safely towed, in the last week, such vessels as the Clan liuch anan and The Hahneman, drawing 23 feet, and carrying 3,000 long tons wheat In the Washington territory legis lature, last Friday, councilman White introduced a bill to protect salmon and other food fish. None must be caught between March 15 and the 1st of May, or during the month of Au gust The penalty is not less than S50 nor more than S200. None shall be taken between G on Saturday even ing and 6 on Sunday evening:samo penalty. The provisions are similar to a bill introduced in the house by Stevenson. It was referred to the committee on way's and means. Few understand the difference be tween gros3 and net tonnage so often mentioned in the reports of measure ment of vessels as recorded at tho custom house. The register of ton nacre is 100 cubic feet to the ton. Under the act of congress of August 5. 1882, the documents of vessels show a gross and net tonnage. In sailing vessels it does not make much difference, but in steamers the space occupied by the machinery is de ducted, brincinc the tonnage down to the actual space occupied by freight ana passengers. The weather which, yesterday morning gave promise of moderating, turned cold again shortly beforo sun rise, and all day the wind blew keenly from the east. Astorians are never ready for cold weather, and our usu ally genial warmth leaves us unpre pared for the chilly land breeze. The Bonita came down at five yester day afternoon and reports stiff ico as far as Mt. Coffin; there is, however, little danger of a freeze-up, though it inteferes considerably with the-boats, etc The Wonder brought down a coasting schooner yesterday after noon that was badly cut by the ice. PERSONAL MENTION. D. H. Caswell, of Belknap Springs, is in the city. G. C. Fnlton has been reappointed notary public. W. H. Parry, formerly of the Cor vallis Gazette and Independence West Side has been engaged as managing editor of the Salem Sentry. Mr. Parry is a newspaper man of expe rience. Talkins Turkey. The following is the way that the peopleof other towns pay for adver tising in a legitimate manner without going away to secure what they could best secure at home. The people of Tucson, Arizona, buy 8,000 copies of their local paper every month for the purpose of sending it abroad, and in addition pay S200 a mouth for a spe cial 'i write up." The town of Lamar, Col., recently paid the local paper 31,000 for a '-write up." and the citi zens of Fort Scott, Kan., have just spent 87,000 in advertising the town. Hutchison, Kansas, gives its local paper a bonus of 810,000 a year for remaining alive and kicking, while Newton, Kansas, pays its paper 815, 000 a year. There is nothing at all improper in this, as this money is paid for legitimate advertising. On the contrary it is very creditable to the citizens of these towns that they thus encourage their local pa pers and at tho same time benefit themselves; but we ask no moro than simply for the people of the county to subscribe for tho Sentinel, pay for it, and induce your neighbors to do the aamcQoldendale Senti7iel. The "Chronicle" Is Mistaken. In its long list of marine losses for the year 1887, the San Francisco Chronicle has this: "Clara Parker, February 7th: lost at Astoria." This is a mistake. No vessel, steam or sail, was lost at Astoria or any where near Astoria, and there was no marine mishap at Astoria or in this vicinity meriting more than the brief est chronicle. The record of the Columbia bar and river for '86 and '87 is a proud one, and with the exception of tho burning of thoTelephone in the river, which cannot be considered a ''ma rine mishap," in the general accepta tion of that term, the record of this section in that regard is a clear one. Not By Running It Down. The man who will live in a place, getting his daily bread from its citi zens, and spend his spare moments in running it down, should bo kicked out, and the beginning of a now year will be a good time to deal with all such in Albany. This train of thought is suggested by the following from a iiansa3 paper: A man may chin, and a man may grin, And gather in shekels each day; But ho can't boom his town By running it down, Because it ain't built that way. Democrat. Information Wanted. John Anton Bosendahl, native of Bjorneborg, Finland; last heard of on May 21st, 18S7; supposed to be drowned; any information concern ing his whereabouts will be thank fully received. A. Sutton, Sec'y C. E. F, P. U. San Francisco and Portland papers please copy. Communicated. Portland, Nov. 26, 1887. My Dear Mr. Wisdem: You have reason to &el proud of the success of Kobertine. I have used it constantly for a whole year and find it beautiful and beneficial for the complexion. It possesses all the qual ities you claim for it, and I have much pleasure in recommending it, The "liobortine Powder," your latest addition to the Artistic toilet, makes a charming finish and is worthy of its companion, Kobertine, Xours truly, Jeannie Winston. The statis tician of the agricultural department estimates the area of corn harvested at 72,000,000 acres, and that it pro duced 1,456,000.000 bushels, of the value of SG1G,000,000. The area of wheat was 37,-lU0,0U0 acres, with a product ot 4jb,UUU,UUU bushels, value, 8309,000,000. Tnearea of oats, Uii.UU'J.UUU acres; product 659,000,000 bushels: value S200,000,000. The reports or wmtor wheat do not show much decrease of area. The condition is affected somewhat by the dryness of tho seed bed in districts that sunercu from Uroutli delaying seeding, germination and growth. Tho average condition is 95; the con dition of winter rye corresponds very closely to that of wheat. AT THE NATIONAL CAPITAL. Washington, Jan. 7. The commit tee on elections after a brief secret conference, to-day postponed tho Car-lisle-Thoebe contested election case until next Saturday, in order to give Carlisle a chance to make a formal reply if he chooses to do so to the af fidavits submitted by the contestants. The house committees on judiciary. banking and currency, coinage, weights and measures, war claims, In dian affairs and manufactures, organ ized this morning and named days of meeting. The committee on banking and cur rency appointed chairman Williams and congressmen Landes, Schneider, Dingley and Weber as sub-committee to consider a bill to reorganize the na tional banking system as suggested by comptroller Menholm and intro duced by Wilkins. MEXICAN FINANCES. City or Mexico, Jan. 7. Beriiu advices aro that a loan of 852,000,000 for Mexico will be arranged before tho close of this montb, on terms fa vorable to the country, and it is also claimed that the Ger man government approves of placing German capital here where Germans have built up a large trade. The government has declared free of duty everything entering into the con struction of telegraph and telephone lines. The rapid riso of quicksilver in London is giving impetus to the working of quicksilver mines here and endeavors will be made to work several newly discovered deposits in the northern states. The govern ment is about to assume control of all mints now under lease and expects to make a great saving by so doing. She Wasn't Bnilt That Way. About the funniest thing which has occurred in shipping reports of late is the Ledger's Port Townsend special, which a few days ago in formed the world that "a large schooner loaded with brick, and bound from Victoria to Seattle, was water-logged .vith loss of spars in the straits of Dnngeness." How a schoon er loaded with brick, after losing her spars and being water-logged, could remain afloat, the Ledger alone can tell. Seattle Times, 3. A Sound X,cgal Opinion. E. My brother also was very low with 31a larial Fever and Jaundice, hut was cured by timely use of this medicine. Am satisfied Electric Bitters saved his life." 3Ir. D. I. At the Hoffman House on a recent night a party sat at a table in the art gallery making wagers, each on his own particu lar iricK. a young oroker, who speni last summer with his grandmother in Jersey, won a pocketful of greenbacks on a trick taught him by the good old lady. He had lost considerable money on catch bets, when ho offered to wager any one in the party that he could eat more egg3 than any other three men present, pro viding he was permitted to have the last turn. A doctor, a coroner and a bank teller took the bet. After a brief discus sion tho three gentlemen decided to tackle fried eggs. They repaired to an all-night restaurant in Sixth avenue, famed for the encounters which men about town have had within its portals, and ordered a batch. Every man ate, and the waiter handed a check for several dozen. Then the young broker that had learned a thing or two from his Jersey crana- mother directed the cook to crack and spill into the large pan 100 fresh eggs. Before putting the egg3 into the pan, however, he ordered that it be half filled with vinegar. His instructions were carried oat. After allowing the mixture to cook a reasonable time the cover was lifted and the eccs placed in a big dish. By permission of the proprietor the gen tlemen interested had watched the coo inp. When the etrna were bronsht forth every one except the man with the Jersey grandmother gave vent to ejaculations of astonishment. The 100 eggs could conveniently be put into an ordinary teacup. Then tho owner ate mem m half a dozen swallows. "There's a hole in the pan." yelled one of the party. "JNo, there ain't. I'll explain, j-uij vinegar has eaten tbem. It is a fact. You can drop 1000 eggs into a boiler with a little vinegar in it, and you'll find that when cooked in it the eges will disappear as if by magic."-S''eui York Letter. Terrible Accident on the Canadian Pacific. Winnipeg. Jan. 6. Canadian Pa cific passsengers, arrived from the west to-day, describe Wednesday's accident at Middleton. Two freight trains met on a trestle eighty feet high, between land 2 o'clock Wednes day morning. The engine of tho westbound train became fastened in the trestle-work, and stuck there, while the tender and several cars jnmped over the top and went to the bottom, lhe engine coming rrorn tne east went through tiio trestle imme diately after tho collision, and took down a number of freight cars. Two engineer, one fireman and one brakeman were killed outright. One man lodged under the wreck- ago was noticed to be alive, and one of his comrades undertook to remove him by grasping his hand. The res cuer was horrified when he broke the man's fingers, which had been frozen while in this deplorable position. Another man was seen underneatii the wreck, all his body being visible except the head, which was horribly mangled. Nobody seemed to know the cause ot the accident. It was thought the meu bad been too long on tne tram going east and had fallen asleep. noes It Pay?
