Shebjian, Allison, Hawley and Cul lom lunched together in the Senate restaurant the other day, and an ob servant bystander saw that Hawley paid for the crowd, whilo Allison set up the cigars. Br cutting a canal six miles long around Niagara Falls, connectinglake Ontario with the "Welland canal, it is claimed that three-quarters ol a cent can be saved in the cost of transport ing grain from the west to New York and over a day in the length of time. Camebojt, Phelps, Sherman, Stan ford, Morton, Alger and Depew, of those mentioned as possible candi dates for the presidency, are million aires. This country has never yet had a president whose fortune could not bo expressed with less than seven figures. SEINES AND GILL NETS. Fish commissioner F. 0. Eeed be ing asked by an Oregonian reporter what ground there was for the complaiat of fishermen in regard to the law concerning the size of "mesh in seines and gill nets being enforced, said that the law in regard to salmon fishing needed revision, as there had been a great change in the fishing business since it was framed. Then no one cared for bluebacks, steel heads or silversides, while all of these fish are now of value. Owing to the imperfect nature 'of the law the commission had not intended to pay any attention to the size ofmesh used this year. They merely intended to enforco the law as regards close days, and leave it to the next legis ture to make a law in regard to the size of the mesh, adapted to the cir cumstances of fishing as practiced now. The statuto requires the meshes of seines to be three inches square and of gill nets four and a quarter inches square. The enforcement of the latv against seines practically destroys about 50, 000 worth of property and a great many gill nets besides, but there is no provision in the law regarding fish wheels, for none were in use here when the law was made. The reason why the mesh must bo smaller in a seine than a gill net is that the seine in being hauled is kept tant and if a salmon gets its head into the meshes of the seine it would be able to force it's way through, while a gill net, floating loosely in the wat er, gives way to every motion of the fish, and cannot be broken by its struggles. The enforcement of the law in regard to the small mesh will work considerable hardship to fisher men, but the commission have no dis cretion in the matter. Their remedy is with the legislature at the next session. SOME SALMON SUBMISES. In a communication to the Ameri can Orocer, under date of April Gtb, J. JL Armsby, of. Chicago, one of the heaviest operators in canned salmon on the Atlantio side of the country, predicts a comparatively light pack and high prices. Bearing in mind the fact that his interests probably lie in that direction, he nevertheless gives some plausible reasons for his position. In the first place he cites the steady falling off of the Columbia river pack as follews: Pack of 1884, cs., about 700,000 Packofl8S5 550,000 Pack of 188G 550,000 Packofl837 347,000 Mr. Armsby says this steady de crease has been tho history of every salmon river. Thi increase in settle ments along the banks adds to local consumption, leaving less forcanners. Fishermen on the Columbia river are exacting $1.23 apiece for fish. This makes tho threo fish necessary to pack a case cost S1.05 more than last year. Other expenses, including en hanced value of tin and solder, add another 10c to the case, thus making tho cost 29o per dozen higher than last year. Mr. Armsby doe3 not be lieve Columbia river salmon particu larly cheap, but they will not bo cheaper. He does not think the in crease from Alaska will exceed 150, 000 cases, and that this amonnt will be offset by the decrease elsewhere. E. O. Blake, of London, who ar rived in New York on tho 7th, in re ferring to the condition of the canned salmon trade of England, is reported to have said that "every advance of 6d per caso in the cost of salmon in England reduces the consumption a certain number of cases; that the working people there have a certain sum which they can spend, and when prices rise above that which they have allowed for an article they abandon its use." He believes that the position of salmon is statistically a strong one, and while it is admitted that a pack equal to that of the past two years is readily taken, it remains to be seen whether it will go into con sumption as readily this year as last with prices so much higher. aicata Cooked to Order.
