Failing Health. Ten years ago my health began to fail. I was troubled with a distressing Cough, Night Sweats, Weakness, and Nervous ness. I tried various remedies pro scribed by different physicians, Dut became so weak that I could not go up stairs without stopping to rest. My friends recommended me to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which I did, and I am now a3 healthy and strong as ever. Mrs. E. L. Williams, Alexandria, Minn. I have used Ayer's Sarsaparilla, in my family, for Scrofula, and know, if it is taken faithfully, that it will thoroughly eradicate this terrible disease. I have also prescribed it as a tonic, as well as an alterative, and must say that I honestly believe it to be the best blood medicine overcompounded. W. F. Fowler, M. D.f D. D. B Greenville, Tenn. Dyspepsia Cured. It would be impossible for me to de scribe what I suffered from Indigestion and Headache up to the time I began taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I was under the care of various physicians, and tried a great many kinds of medicines, but nover obtained more than temporary re lief. After taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla for a short time, my headache disap peared, and my stomach performed its duties more perfectly. To-day my health is completely restored. Mary Harley, Springfield, Mass. I have been creatly benefited by the prompt use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla. It tones and invigorates tho system, regu lates the action of the digestive and assimilative organs, and vitalizes the Diooa. it is, without aouDt, me most reliable blood purifier yet discovered. H. Villard to Have Control of The Oregon and Transcontinental. Henry Villard's extraordinary career, with the remarkable vicissi tudes of fortune he has experienced, will in all probability reveal still another change next month, when he will once more be placed in control of the Oregon and Trans continental company. He or ganized the company in 1881 and was forced to retire irom control iu the autumn of 18S3, when re verses came thick and fast upon him. His plan is, to elect a suffi cient number ot his friends to con stitute a majority of the board of directors of the company, after which tho directors will elect Mr. Villard president of the corpora tion. For some time past a syndicate has been quietly working to obtain control of th 6tock of this oom pany. It is claimed that, out of the total stock issued, 400,000 shares, the syndicate holds fully 300,000 shares. Sidney Dillon, the present president, will retiro, but will be retained by tho board of directors in Villard's interest, as will also W. S. Bull. It is also said Mr. Villard arranged to take care of the floating debt of 3. 000,000 which hung over tho pro perty as a perennial menace, and that financially all will move smoothly. It is intimated that tho Villard party also succeeded in obtaining a majority of tho stock of the O. R. & N. Co., and that after the election it will pass into the control of Mr. Villard. When reverses cf fortune struck Villard, compelling him to retiro from both companies as well as his pet road, Northern Pacific, he wont to Europe. It was then generally believed he was a ruined man. This was in August, 1884. In October, 1886, he returned to this country, apparently with plenty of means. It was said he had come back as the representative -of a powerful German syndicate to in vestigate and operate in American securities. He opened an office in the Mills building, he rented tho magnificent Tiffany house at the corner of Seventy-second street and Fifth avenue and he once more became a familiar figure in New York. Villard's career had beer pictur esque. He was born' in SpyT on tho Rhine in 1835. He was graduated from tho Gynasium there in 18o2 and came to this country in 1853. For a while he remained in New York, but in 1853 he went to Chicago; thence he went to St. Louis and finally settled in Bellevue, 111., where he had relatives. There he commenced the study of the law, but began writing for tho German papers. Meanwhile he studied the English language, and in 1858 ho began his career as a newspaper writer iu that tongue. He took an active part in reporting, the famous cam paign iu Illinois between Lincoln and Douglas, and in 139 was sent by the Cincinnati Commercial to write a series of articles from tho west. In the national campaign or 18G0, when Mr. Lincoln was elected president, Mr. Villard, by reason of his acquaintance with Lincoln, was detailed by a West ern paper to accompany him through the campaigu. Then he became a war correspondent, and in I860 married Miss Garrison, daughter of William Lloyd Garri son. Then ho went to Europe during the Austro-Prussian war for a New York paper. On this trip he fell in with some German capital ists who wore interested in Ameri can securities. They sent him here to look after their interests. While acting in this capacity he locked horns with Jay Gould in the Kansas Pacific fight, in which he had a second receiver appointed and ultimately conquered, getting his backers $1.10 for their secrities, when Gould originally offered to pay 40 cents on the dollar. This brought Villard to the front and he was then sent to look after interests in this 6tate. He identi fied himself with Northwestern interests and was phenomenally successful until his North ern Pacific venture, which, after he had completed the task of building the road, brought ruin about his head. In early years, and as a poor, struggling boy, Mr. VillarSwas known under the name of Heinrich Hilgard, but after he obtained a foothold as a newspaper man he changed it to Henry Villard, under which name he reaped and lost one immense fortune, and now seems to be in a fair way to gain another.
