Greatest CiiraHiedlacaverycTermade. A Scene at the Vatican. Here is a bit from a private let ter from Rome during the jubilee, dealing with a description of the canonization of saints one day at the Vatican, "The pope came in a golden chair, carried on men's shoulders. Beside him were the superb ostrich fans and banners unfurled, when he lud taken his seat on tho throne and car dinals knelt before him and kissed his hand, and when he raised his hands right and left to give his blessings, the crowd fell on their knees. It was a mag nificent sight. The ambassadors were in full dress. The Hungar ian wore a ruby velvet cloak with priceless" fur. The duke of Nor folk, who had come with a letter to the pope from Queen Victoria, was in scarlet and gold, with the Garter. Many of them were blaz ing with orders on their breasts of diamonds, but all were eclipsed by the pope's robe of scarlet vel vet, so heavy with embroidery that he could not stand in it, and had to be held up by attendants. He was dressed underneath in white silk; be looked weary and sick; almost too feeble to raise his hand to give his blessing. But you never saw anything so fine as the bwiss guards, in their red and yel low suits designed by Michael Angelo himself and white plumes; nor the cardinals in their scarlet capes and velvet robes, with immense trams; nor the bish ops ia their tunics and exquisite lace; nor the court chamberlains, who looked as if they had just stepped out of a pieture frame, in black velvet and long hose, with ruffs aiound their necks and gold chains on their breasts." To Make Hands White. Now that the tomato season is coming on, I wish to tell young and old ladies, and gentlemen, too, that there is nothing in the world which will make their hands and faces so soft and white as to wash them in tomato pulp. The way to do it is to take a large, ripe, red tomato and deliberately mash it in the hands, wash the hands in the mash, and afterwards rinse them in clear water. There is an acid in the tomato which is very pene. trating, and will remove stains from linen as well as from tho hu man cuticle, and will take moth patches and stains from the face just as easily. There may be some who would not care to use a plebian tomato. Such can procure a lemon, cut off the ends, and then cut the icmon in two in the middle. Stand the parts up, the small cut ends down ward, and put on each piece four lumps of sugar and set them in the oven until the sugar is dissolved and gone into the lemon. Then rub one half of the lemon on 'each hand, put on an old pair of gloves and keep them on till morning, when the hands will be soft, and white, and smooth. The juice is not sticky, as one might suppose, but appears oily, and is a very ex cellent remedy for rough, red or chapped hands. It is much used by Tuikish women. The largest salmon caught with a fly in the vicinity of Bangor, Me., weighed 27 pounds It was sent to president Cleveland. The fish run larger each year. Three years ago they averaged 1 pounds. Now they average from 2,'J to 25. The total amount ol land actu ally returned to the public domain and opened for settlement since March, 1885, is S0,G90,720 acres; also, a statement showing tho total amount recommended by the laud office for restoration still pending amounts to 15,410,058 acres. To promote the growth of the hair take a, teacup of sage, steep in a quart of soft water, strain, add one half teaspoonful of borax and sponge the head with the mixture, using a stiff brush. Tho United Stntps fish nnmtnis- sion is experimenting with shad culture as far south as Atlanta. Three million eggs will be hatch ed ana distributed in the streams of that state.
