Coming up tho river last Sunday night an exciting race occurred be tween tho Potter and the stern wheel steamer Undine. The Undine left Astoria just before the Potter landed from Hwaco. It was about half past eleven when tho passengers on the Potter who were still stirring, saw the lights of the Undine ahead of them. About seven miles below Ka lama the Potter overhauled tho Un dine, but tho latter boat was by this time on her mettle, as could be seen by the great cloud of smoke aud sparks that came pouring out of her stack. The firemen of the Potter, too, were passing in wood to the fnr nace at a lively rate. The latter boat graduallly crawled up to her rival till the bows of both were on a straight line. The excitement, by this time, had spread to nearly every passenger on both boats. The officers of the Potter are nnder orders not to run without tho cut-off, but to show what she could do the engineer dropped it for a moment. The Potter forged ahead nearly a length amid the shonts and jeers of her passen gers. Then the engines were re turned to their regular stroke and the next instant the Undine had re covered her position of bow to bow, and it was her passengers turn to shout. For fnlly half an honr these posi tions were maintained, tho Potter finding it no easy task to get away from the suction of her smaller rival. At last a gradual gain became appar ent, and in a few minutes more tho Undine had to bo content to follow in the wnke of the big side-wheeler. Oregonian, 14.
