Tho county court met jeslerday una najournca to iu o'clock to-uay. The British bark Trongate will cross out this roorninp, weather per mitting. Tho tug Thistle was driven ashore high and dry at Koguo river, during a recent storm. Call round and tako a look at Grit fiu & Heed's holiday display. It is something immense. Tho Alki came down yesterday and tied up to Kinney's dock. She will nrobablv cross ont fo.iliu. The Willamette came down from Portland yesterday afternoon, and will probably cross ont to tho Sound tuia luurumg. Without exception the press speak in the highest terms of the Yisscher & Taylor entertainments wherever they have been. Col. James Waters, a survivor of the war of 1812, lives ntKoseburg, Or., and representative Hermann, has introdnced a bill to increase his pen sion. The Tatoosb. island cable is worn ont and broken, a new one will cost $1,500 and an act of congress will be necessary to secure money for the purohnse. The "bottom has dropped out of the California potato market and they are selling in Portland, for, from 40 to 45 cents per sack; choioe ones n't 80 cents. Portland uses 3,000 sacks per day. The funeral of Demitro Sovico, who died yesterday will take place from Coroner Surprenant'a undertaking parlors to-day at 12 o'clock, under the auspices of the O. R. F. P. Union, of wh"ch deceased was n member. The interment will be at Clatsop. Since the Willamette Cliief has been laid off for repairs the other three boats have been doing the work of four. Each one starts from here in the morning, making the day trip to Portland, and then makes a night trip back, ready to start np the next morning. Mrs. Hasten, sole executrix of the last will and testament of John Set terlind, deceased, came down from Ca'.hla-uet with sheriff Albert, of Wahki .kura county, yesterday. Cor oner Surprenaut, delivered the will to hor and she returned on the Tele phone last evening. Speaking of Will L. Visscher'a "Sixty Minutes in tho War," in Port land, thu Oregcnian says: "His mastery of dialect ii perfect, and whothor ho was speaking 89 a Ger man, a Frenchman, aa Irishman or a negro, he wa3 equally good. He suc ceeded admirably in entertaining his large audience, and tho closest atten tion to ptid to the end." Tho Urcgoniin noticed .Mr. .1. II. Taylor's performance at tho Tnner nacle as follows': "He began with some humorous remarks concerning his experience as a "wondering min strel" and then sang "Tho Mocking ttira ' to a Banjo accompamment.witn wondorftiliird imitations. The nu dienco recalled" him and ho appeared with twoTbanjo's, playing both at the same time, rendering imitations of church bell chimes, nnd closing with a pleasing melody." TheBteanierl'giJiai?ai stranded while crossing in to Yaquina on Tues day, in tow of a tug. A tug is kept at thot ,port to take frequent sound ings, -locate the constantly shifting channel, and tow tbo steamers through' the narrow channel. It is said that' through bad steering, the steamer in tow1 of tho tug grounded, breaking the hnwser. At last ac counts there was nine feet of water in her hold and there were fears of tho vessel's loss. Her cargo was being removed as rapidly as possible. Charles A. Perkins nnd Milton T. Sherratt were arraigned for trial last Taesday. in the United mates oircuit court, on a oharge of cutting timber on the publio lands. They eaoh en tered a nlea of cuilty. Perkins, who was ohareed with catting 200,000 feet. was fined S2W, and Buorratt. wno was oharged with cutting 100,000 feet, was fined 100. They paid their flues and went away well satisfied. The value of the timber standing was es timated nt 50 cents per thousand feet, and the fines were made just double thi3 amount which approximates nearly tbo real value of the timber. County Court. Dec. 12. Court met with judge Page, com missioners Sm-th Bnd Numbers, present. In atten3ance,sheriffSmidt and county olerk Trenchard. John Laco was naturalized. A liguor license was granted to Daniel son & Johnson for a saloon in npper town. , , Court adjourned to 10 o clock, Dec. 24. YESTEBDAVS ELECTION. The day opened wet and stormy yesterday morning and continued so throughout. A great degree of in terest was manifested in the elec tion by the friends of the candidates, and no effort was spared to bring out as fall & vote as the weather would permit. Perfect good nature pre vailed on both sides daring the day, although thcro was much earnest op position, and some ventilation of al leged personal history. The result of the election becamo apparent long before the polls closed, as interested friends of the candidates kept a close and tolerably oorreot tally of the votes cast. The work of counting the votes was soon finished, and the result was as follews: FIBST WAED. Fox 233 Weeks .-. ISO Fox's majority 133 Total number of votes cast in this ward, 438. sscosd wahd. Elbon 151 liowlby 124 Elbon'a majority SO In this ward there were 278 votes cast for Bowlby and Elbon, and one scattering for Fox. The result is that Mr. Fox will fill the vacancy caused by the expiration of Councilman Sherman's term, and Mr. Elbon will fill the place made vacant by Counoilman Carruther's resignation. The politics of tho different candi dates seemed to make the cleotion a matter of interest to a good many, and so far as that is concerned, hon ors are easy nt present as the council will stand evenly divided thtee lte publicans and three Democrats. At the city election held a year ago on tho 15th of this month, Bergman, received 330 and Trullinger 205 votes in tho first ward, a total of 595, which is 175 votes more than were cast for councilman in the first ward yester day. In the second ward last year, Welch received 207 votes and Stokes 141, a total of 348, which is 70 votes more than were oast yesterday. Fox's majority of 138 yesterday is a larger majority than was received by any .candidate on tho city tioket last year, with the exception of harbor master, who got the combined vote of both wards: Snow G43, Mc Cabe 320; a majority of 323 for Snow. At that time McCabe wag out of town and was not able to make a personal canvass, which probably ac counts for Snow's phenomenal ma jority. Last year tho total vote for street superintendent was 970, which was tho largest total vote cast for any one office and which is 251 more than the total number cast yesterday. The difference may be accounted for by the fact that last year's elec tion day was as fine weather as could be wished, while yesterday voters al most had to swim to the polls. And it was believed there were some few illegal votes' cast last year, whereas yesterday probably there were none. The eleoted candidates were the re cipients of condolences from their friends last evening, while congratu lations wero tendered the defeated ones. Captain Hustler's brass cannon was brought out and made mingle its thunder tones with the whish of rockets, celebrating the result of the election in the first ward. It is probable that the result of the election has given as much general satisfaction as it would had the resnlt been different. PERSONAL MENTION. Yin. Cook, is down from Clirtou.
