The success that has attended the operations of various corpora, tions engaged in the business of canning and salting salmon in Alaska during the past season has created a great desire amoi.g the mercantile community to invest capital in similar pursuits during the coining year. Taking advan tage of this Alaskan furore, a number of men are inaugurating a scheme of a very Utopian kind to obtain money from persons who are smitten with the "fish" fever. A circular has been in circula tion for some time past, especially among water front men, setting forth the prospects and aims ot a company styled the Alaska Co operative Packing company. The document states that "'the company will start next spring for Alaska to pack salmon and locate timber and mineral lands. Its sharps are 1100 each, no member to own over three. A limited number of men of good moral character can buy stock, fair wages and board to be paid. Natives are to be em ployed in the rough work of the camp." It is also stated that the year's woik will round out with 2500 barrels of fish, representing in round numbers $2.i0,000. The prospectus closes with the assur ance that the enterprise offers a sure road to competency, and in tending investor;, are to apply to George Chopat at 837 Folsom street. Upon referring fo the city di rectory it was found that George Chopat was a cook at the place mentioned. A Chronicle report er called upon Chopat, and found him engaged in wuiling the time by rock'ng a cradle. Mr. Chopat, however, voluably descanted upon the wonderful prospects of the co operative company. Ho claims that the location seleoted for the site of tho fishing Utopia is unsur passed, and that within a mouth after the arrival of the men at least 1000 barrels of fish will be packed. "We are chartered for fifty years," said the chef-de-cuisine, and he produced the articles of in corporation duly signed and sealed with the state of California's in signia. ,-Onr capital is to be $5000 in shares of S100 each." "How do you expect to purchase barrels, salt and materials for so small a sum?" "Why, you see, this is enough to make a start. We keep on shipping salmon all the time. Wc oply a-k workingmen to contrib ute half the stock, the other half we intend to get from the busi ness firms from which we pur chase our goods. Here is an ex tract from our new prospectus which has been sent to merchants: "In the early spring we are in the market for several thousand dollars' worth of goods, but which sum is nothing to be compared with the steady demands of the regular periodical requirements of suoh an increasing settlement as ours shall become. To an inter ested business firm our trade will undoubtedly become a profitable peimanentfact. We would there fore ask you to take, say three shares, which, while it would bene fit us immensely now, will prove a fitst-cla-s investment to you." "How do you propose to locale timber lands when locating such lands in the territory of Alaska is not legal?" "Why," replied Chopat, "I have ai ranged so wo can t-quat down." "Have you received many ap plications for shares vet?" "No, very few. We hd a lit tle mot ey in the Cilifornia Na tional Bank when it suspended, but I don't think it is lost." In the by laws of the society it is stated that each workingmau for the Erst year is to be paid 15 a month. Chopat told the reDurt er that at least twenty-one men I would go up to tne fishery. This means an expenditure ot over $900 a month, or nearly $5,500 for the entire season. Allowing a pack of 3.000 barrels of salt salm on at 810 a barrel, aggregating i 33,000, 1 he price bo maintained, tne expeniiture'-of freight to San .: rranciscof-wages to men, material, provisions and other outlays will amount to nearly $20,000. As suming that this co-operative con cern realizes $10,000 profit, which is a problematical assumption, as salt salmon in large qiiautiti.es de presses the San Francisco market to a very great degree, there is in the glownisr prospectus a state ment that 20 per cent, of the earn ings is to be devoted to building a cannery. This statement alone stamps the originators an 1 pro moters of the company as being entirely ignorant of tho amoun t of money required to fit out a can nery. The vivid pictures and in viting prospectus, especiallly with regard to the wonderful fishing grounds of Wiloughhy, Glacier bay, southeast Alaska are laughed at by those who know the charac ter of the location. George Chopat, the secretary, is a cook; John F. Quaine, the nresident is a job printer, while the names of James D.Crandlev,John L. Hairis and Frank J. Orff are not to be found in thp city directory. These men constitute the board of di rt ctors. Chopat showed the reporter a book containing names of persons who he allfgf's, have signified their intention to take stock, and they are said to be of good moral character as required by the regu lations of the company. The names of .several persons em plowed on the steamer Mariposa figure in the volume. The only capitalist whose name appears is L.Pon Moss of dlU btusome street. G'liipaf, however, was not sure ot obtaining any subscription from that gentleman. The latest document issued by this extraordinary concern is a notification to the effect that, "as ihe funds of ihfe company will not permit the bu ing of a vessel this year, each im mber must buy his own ticket on Goodallj Perkins & Co.'s steamer. It is also sug gested that-vafra meetingto be held to-morrow night December "!6th, as many as pissibecome prepared to take more than one share, and three if possible." Down town merchants who re ceived the prospectus of the com pany look upon the aifair as a vis ionary scheme, and have no idea of investing money in a concern to be run on the basis Droposed by the piomoters.
