rULL OF THANETUTiNESS.
If He Did Pail to Bun a Eanch With
the Assistance of a Pair of Mules
and a Mortgage.
Thankful? Oh, yes. I've got
a heap to be thankful for. I'm
just biling over with gratitude,"
said a San Joaquin rancher, who
had just stepped out of a lawyer's
office on Montgomery street.
"Look heie, young man, did you
ever try to run a ranch with one
pair of mules and a mortgage? No,
I s'posed not. When I took up
my quarter section I had to mort
gage it to start. The first year
was a bad one and the wheat crop
failed. Then I got into debt for
seed and grub and the interest
piled up on the mortgage. I've
been wrestling with that mort
gage ever since, but it downs me
every time.
"Last spring when the wheat
came up it looked first rate, and
my wife and I watched it grow
as you would a youngster, if you
had one. We worked, hard, got
aloncr without help most of the
time, and went to bed every night
plumb tuckered out. We hoped
to get a little ahead of the mort
gage this year, but it would have
to be a big crop and a big price to
pull us out of the hole.
"Well the crop was just fair.
Bags cost a. good deal more than
anybody had a right to charge,
taxes weie high, .and I have only
got a middling price for my wheat.
While we were waiting for harvest
time we used to figure up once in
awhile to see how we'd come out.
My wife would be tired most to
death with her work, for you must
remember that a woman's work on
a ranch where she does all the
cooking washing and mending,
and takes care of two or three
children, is no picnic, and my
back would be aching like it was
breaking in two, but we'd just sit
down and figure. It was close
calculating, but we allowed that a
good price for the crop
would make both ends meet.
"When a letter came from the
commission man telling in ten
words that all onr year's toil was
going to bring us only in debt and
tough rustling for grub over again,
we iust looked at our roughened,
stiff-jointed hands and wondered
whether it was worth while to
raise stuff for other folks to eat
and go hungry ourselves.
"Jtiust meant that our backs
had ached that somebody else
might take things easy. It meant
that the kids would have to get
along with the same old duds for
another year. Do you know, it
seemed to me for a moment that
if I took a shotgun and went out
on the stage road I wouldn't be
doing any more than the chaps
who live on mortgages do; mebbe
it would be a little squarer and
more man fashion way of getting
what doesn't belong to me. Still,
as I wasn't brought up to that
business, I did not think of it long.
"You work like a Chinaman all
the year, work till you ache all
over, raise wheat enough to feed a
small village for a year, and then
find that you have worked your
self deeper into debt, and see if
you don't have some queer notions
bobbing in your head. Then you
go up to a fellow who sits in an
office, wears good clothes, and
never does a lick of work that's of
any use to any body, hand over to
him the money that your wife and
children need, and almost on your
kuees beg him for the' favor
of being robbed by his mortgage
for another year, and tell me if
you feel your heart just bursting
out of your shirt with promiscu
ous, all-round gratitude." S. F.

There are some able romancers
in North Carolina, or some very
large trees. From Clyde Station
comes the story that a poplar tree
was cut there so large that it made
plank enough to furnish weather
boarding, ceiling and flooring for a
church 50 feet long, 38 feet wide
and 12 feet high. From the same
tree a fence was built on three
quarters of an acre around the
church. There were three logs
left over, and "the remaining
three logs contained lumber
enough to build another church as
large as the first.'"
