Says the Herald of Trade and Grocer and Conner; There has been a greater movement in canned salmon in the last few days than has ever been known to take place in an equal space of time. This is remarkable when we con sider that there are no speculative forces at work, the demand be ing purely legitimate. The princi pal operations have been for Eur opean account, though sales of about 125,000 cases have taken place for domestic consumption. The principal domestic buyer has been J. K. Armsby, who has pur chased about 100,000 cases of Alaska salmon. Columbia river for the moment is neglected, the chief interest be ing centured onjAIaska and British Columbia. The latter pack has been taken up to about 200,000 cases; and over 70 per cent, of the coming Alaska pack has been sold including new brands, for Europe an account. It now looks as though there would be no large quantity left for distribution in the United States. Onerations are epitomized in the circular of the Johnson-Locke Mercantile Co., which we give herewith. San Francisco, Feb. 18, 1S89. Salmon operations this week have aroused general interest as their magnitude has surpassed any previous experience in this sensi tive article. ' Over 550,000 cases of futures, or nearly 3,000,000 of salmon, have been placed. The movement started in Vic toria, B. C.,-where it is reported that Messrs. Welch, Rithet & Co. placed with Messrs. Pelling, Stan ley & Co., Liverpool, about 75,000 cases of British Columbia salmon. Durintr our Mr. Locke's stay in Victoria, the early portion of this month, nearly the whole .British Columbia pack was sold, the move ment aggregating nearly 200,000 cases. As an evidence of the in terest shown in salmon packs of the British Columbia waters, we telegraphed one order to Mr. Locke for the purchase of eleven packs for account of England and Australia. Sales of British Co lumbia fish can be divided as fol fel fol eows: English buyers, cases 93,000 San Francisco buyers, for English and Australian account 95,000 The scene of operations then changed to the Columbia river, and about 100,000 cases were sold of this nackinir. We placed on English account both the Scandi navian and Fisherman brands, and other firms sold the Megler, Photo graph, Badollet and a portion of the Aberdeen brand flats, to go under buyer's label. Other sales have been made of which we can not give particulars at this mom ent, but will add as we go to press it is reported that the Devlin, Man thorn, Hapgood and Cutting packs have been sold. The high price of Columbia river then attracted attention to Alaska fish, and a very spirited demand set in. As a fair indication of the magnitude of the transactions, we would say that we placed ourselves, as brokers, in five days of last week, the following lots of Alaska salmon. Comet brand, cases 15,000 Guardian 10.000 Haven 15,000 Eicolsior...- 18,000 "Walrus 17,500 National 20,000 Chieftain au.ouu Cntting'sArctio 12,500 Circle iiO.000 Unl&belled 1U.WJ Or 158,000 cases Alaska salmon. By the time this circular ap pears, we'will have probably clos ed for five or six more packs that are now under negotiation. In addition to these sales, two local brokers have placed 30,000 cases of Alaska, and a prominent Chica go operator has purchased for east ern sales 75,000 cases, making tho total movement of Alaska fish 263. 000 cases. We have a number of sales now under negotiation. To recapitulate sales of future 1889 packing ofsalmen: British Columbia, cases 190,000 Columbia Biver 100,000 Alaska 2G3.000 packing have been grossly exag gerated, and the chance for a fortu nate outcome of many expeditions now being sent North are extreme ly problematical. As an instance, we take an Alaska stream famil iar to the trade, where 150,000 cases were packed last year. It is an indisputable fact that 95 per cent of the fish that ran in 1888 were caught and canned. This year-we hear of two or three more canneries starting for the river. It is hard to see how the total out put of fish from the stream in 1SS9 can be increased, but it is easy to see that salmon will be packed at an increased cost in this locality, there will be less fish to the can nery, but the total number of sal mon canned will probably not largely exceed 1888. A second instance can be cited of a point in Alaska, where a large commercial company have had a barreling es tablishment for several years, and fish had only been caught in suffi cient quantity to barrel S00 to 1000 barrels a year. This spot is the obiective -point for three can- nine; exneditions. The supply of fish exists mainly in the imagina tion of the Alaska explorers, whose knowledge of tho fish is as limited as their 1SS8 experience. We fear disappointment will await many who venture into the Northern waters for the first time this year. It is a popular delusion that the salmon supply in Alaskts is inexhaustible. It must be re collected, while it is notorious that the waters of Alaska teem with fish, that salmon in paying canning quantities are not easy to find. Conditions are not favorable on the Columbia river for a large pack. Aside from the lessened number of canneries, a mild wint er has resulted in a very light snow fall on the mountains; this means low, clear water on the Columbia in June. This condition ot affairs in the past has invariably resulted in a light pack. While two iittle girls Millie and Winnie Peterson, were returning from school Tuesday in the north ern part of Aitken county, Minn., they were attacked and complete ly devoured by timber wolves, a few scattered bones and shreds of clothing only remaining as horri ble testimony of their fate. On eight of the ballot slips used by a St. Paul Jury recently the word guilty was variously spelled: Grcilty, gilty, guildy, gealty, gealtey, galdy, guldy, geilty. It is presumed the jurors were fairly educated in some language, but had not yet mastered English. She claims that every execution makes a pro found impression of the vengeance of the law.
