A Plea lor the Timber Grabber.
Thirteen men came in in one com
pany one day last week. They stayed
all night at Cho hotel, and in the
morning struck out for the woods.
After three or four days all returnod,
and yesterday started for Oregon City
fo '"prove up" on timber claims. The
leader of the party had been here and
spent some time in tho woods before,
an! so all claims wero picked out. I
suppose now the probability is their
claims are all for one man or one
syndicate, and when the young men
get their title to the land they will
convey it to tho parties furnishing
the money, and if it is not strictly in
accordance with the spirit of the law
it is the only way I can see to develop
the country. Put a poor man on a
quarter sectionHit "timber land havina
100,000 to the acre and he can 'o
nothing wi'h it. Ho has a fortune iu
hi3 haud3, but be cannot use it unless
ho can find a market for bis Ions.
No man will put tip a large saw rail!
unless he is sure of timber to supply
it, and the land is worthless with the
timber on it; so there seems to be, no
way to develop the conntry until the
timber get3 into the hands of capital
ists, and I can see no other way for
them to get it. As soon as they get
tho timber it will be to their advant
age to erect bills and manufacture it,
for a fire may rnn through it and de
stroy all theimber so that it will do'
no one nnv pood. Tho creat cry at
capitalists getting the limber is iu my"
judgment no disadvantage to t lie poor
man, or to the country nod is snort
sighted. Tillamook Vor. Yamhill
