THE FORESTS OF RUSSIA. Cnrious Snierstitions as to the Red Pine and the Cedar. "Although. Russia is a country of plains," writes a correspondent, "it is not destitute of trees. Some of the forests are immense and there are many varieties in the trees. One "of the most com mon is the pine, usually called the red pine on account of the tint of its bark. This pine grows moat abundantly in the Crimea and Small Kussia, on ac count of the rich soil of those two places. The first branches of this pine start twenty feet from the ground, so that one can judge how tall the tree itself must be. The Crimean pine, a species of the red pine, is now grown to a great extent throughout Kussia on account of the great amount of turpentine obtained from it It will grow in any climate as long as it is planted in sandy soil. Over 40,000,000 logs, not less than from forty to sixty yards long, and having a diameter ot three feet, are used yearly as lumber for house-building. Over 60,000,000 cords are used per year as fuel. The Siber ian cedar somewhat resembles the red pine, differing from it in that its needles grow in gronps of five while those of the pine grow single. This cedar grows extensively in Siberia, and is also used for building purposes, but not to the extent that pine is. The wood of the Siberian cedar is more durable than that of the pine, and has a very pleasant order. The growth of the cedar for the first two or three cars is very slow, but after fonr years it grows rapidly until its thirtieth year. The cedar lives from 100 to 300 years, while the pine from 400 to GOO. A greater quantity of turpen tine is obtained from the pine than from the cedar, but the latter pro duces a greater amount of resin. The sapin differs from the Siberian cedars in its shape, which is cone-like. The branches grow low on the tree and in the shape of a circular ring. The seeds ripen in one year, and it is said that if these seeds are 'plentiful the farmers can expect large crops of corn or wheat that year, while the amount of vine seeds usually foretells a good or bad crop of barley. The sapin is found growing usually in the northern parts of Russia. An extract of the llower is used as medicine. The Kiev willow grows in immense numbers by the banks of rivers. The seeds of the frillow are useful for tanning purposes. The asp belongs to the poplar family, aud will grow in any climate or soil. It is called tho tree of the curse as it is the one on which the betrayer Judas was supposed to have hanged himself, and is therefore not mnch liked by the people. The birch is the most useful of all the trees of Russia. It is used in making furniture, for honse-bnild-ing and fire-wood, and the twigs are used as lights instead of candles, ft is the favorite tree of the peasants and is called by them "our curly birch." The birch will only grow where there is an abundance of sunlight. The leaves of the birch are dried and used by the peasants in taking their baths, and also the leaves are boiled and prepared as medicine. "Black Russian leather" is almost wholly made from the bark of the birch, and the sap is used as a drink. The flowers of the lime tree are used as a medicine, wliile the wood is used for building purposes. It does not grow in all soils. The horn beam can always be found growing near the beech, which grows usually in the southwestern states of Russia. Tho wood of the beech is very durable, and is used for various purposes. The bark of the common maple is used for tanning and as powdor instead ot quinine. m a IlucklcH's Arnica. Salrc.
