Myers' cannery began operations for
the .season, yetserday, and presented a
busy appearunoe, says the Seattle Post
Intelligencer. The expert paulmrs, some
of them employed by Mr. Myers for 18
years, were rushing -herd and there, and
the fishermen were busy unloading their
queer, Cat-bottomed boats, which were
well filled with thi first catch of oilmon,
amounting to over 1,200, caught near Mu

catch, and the fishermen are authority
for the statement that this 19 the year

all preparations, and for the next three

the wheels started, and later In the day
the former went down the Sound to look
after some of the boats.
The P. I. says "Oscar Lawrence, kper

The steamer Columbia came in from

Yesterday morning, says tho Ledger,
the government snaff boat Skagit cleaned
out the channel of the Puyallup river
as far up as the naphtha launch works
by removing the snags and sunken, piles.
Some time ago Capt. Ludlow, of the
steamer Laurel, complained to Captain
Jefferson, of the Skagit, of the condition
of the river. Accordingly, yesterday
morning Capt. Jefferson sent word to
Capt. Sudlow and asked him to take him
up the rrver. The trip was made, and as
a result, the channel, which has been In
bad shape, Is now clear. The sunken
piles were blasted out. A party of sur
veyors aib work in the vicinity had placed
their marks on some of ths piles and
protested against their removal While
their protest was being courteously listen
ed to by Capt. Jeffersonv marks, piles
and all sailed skyward, the charge having
been fired. Returning to the lower part
of the harbor the Skagit blew up the old
tank of the sunken hulk Messenger and

The British steamer Bawmmore will
stll today for Payta, Peru, with a large
cargo of general merchandise for Central
end South American ports, Including
building material, lumber, wine, cement,
kerosene, beer, rice, live stock, carriages,
coke, lime, machinery, furniture, etc.,
says the Commercial Nenvs. She also has
two large copper bottomed sugar barges
that aro stow! on the deck aft. The
Bawnmore Is not exactly a beauty to
look at, but she Is one of the strongest
steamers afloat, and that Bhe is a fast
sailer is proved by 'the fact that she
made the trip from hero to Payta In 15
days. Hist lower deck Is divided by fore
and aft and athwartship steel bulkheads
Into tanks for carrying petroleum. These
tanks, at the hatchways, extend through
the 'tween, diecks to the upper deck. When
loading, the tanks are filled to about two-
thirds up from 'tween decks to the top
of the hatch, so that whatever the posi
tion the vessel is In at sea the lower hold
is always full of oil. Captin Woodslde
claims that the Bawnmore Is practically
unsinkable. He says that If the bottom
wen taken out of her and a number of
the tanfts punctured In a collision, or oth.
erwlse, as long as two tanks held togeth
er, the vessel would float. The Bawnmore
will go from here first to Astoria, Or., and
then up to Portland, where she will take
on a shipment of flour for Central Amer
ica. This will be stowed In the 'tween
decks, which are perfectly clean and
sweet, in fact, strange to say, not a smell
of oil can be detected tnroughout the ves
sel. 'One of the midship tanks contains
now 700. tons, or about 210,000 gallons cf
oil. This will be pumped out at Fortlana
for the gas company there, and then the
flour will be taken In. Captain Woodslde
Is accompanied by his wife.

Many Remarkable Cures
The objections urged against Indio
In the past by the large numbers who
otherwise would have been glad to tak
advantage ot Us beneficial climate, has
been a lack of suitable accommoda
tion. , The Southern Pacific Company,
takes pleasure In announcing that sev
eral Commodious and
Comfortable Cottages
have Just been erected at Indio sta

at reasonable rates. They are fur
nit hed with modern conveniences, sup
plied with pure artesian water, and no
situated as to gove occupants all the
advantages to be derived from a more
or less protracted residence In this de
lifhtful climate.
(From the San Francisco Argonaut.)
"In the heart of the great desert ol
the Colorado whloh the Southern Pa-
cilio road traverses there is an oasis
called Indio, which, In our opinion, li
the sanitarium of the eartn. we De
lieve, from personal Investigation, thai
for certain Invalids, the-e Is no spot 01
this planet so favorable."
Q. T. Stewart. M. L., write: "The
purity of tho air, and the eternal sun
shine, fill one with wonder and 'delight
Nature has accomplished sc
much that there remains but little for
man to do. As to its possibilities as a
health resort, here Is the most per
fect sunshine, with, a temperature al
ways pleasant, a perfectly dry soil
for rain Is an unknown factor: pure
oxygen, imn atmosphere and pure
water. What more can be desired?
It Is the place, above all others, for
lung troubles, and a paradise for rheu
matics. Considering the number of
sufferers who have been cured, I have
no hesitancy in recommending this
genial oasis as the haven of the afflict
ed." INDIO
