At Seaside all is preparation for th coming lieach season, which. It Is .x pecteil. will be the greatest In the his tory of the local summer resorts. Sev eral new cottages have been erected dur ing the j.ast few months, and many re pairs have been made to the old ones. Astoria's park n reality. The dreams of enthusiasts have taken tangible shape. A breathing spot for the masses ha been provided. For many years the enthusiastic be. Ib'vers In the future Importance and de velopment of Astoria as a shipping port and commercial center have endeavored to Impress upon the people th- necessity of providing for a public park. It Is not necessary to recite here the good and sub stantial reasons why every city should have Its park and boulevards. Every one knows that u thickly settled commu nity must have these breathing places to maintain the health of Its eople. En lightened men and women of this d.iv will not live 111 a city devoid of these health-giving resorts and beautifying places. It became the duty of the enthusiasts to convince their slower brethren that now Is the time to prepare- for these fu ture parks and lav the foundation for a system of places for recreation. The As toria Progressive Commercial Associa tion a few months ago undertook the work of securing a park site while land Is cheap and choice sites open. Yester day their labors were" crowned with suc cess. To Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Shlveb y belongs the cre-dit of establishing the first nubile park In Astoria. The site deeded by them to the trustees of the Progressive Association covers the twelve acre's lying Just south ef. an. I contiguous to. the city water works reservoir. It Is naturally a beautiful location, on a high knoll, overlooking the city nnd bay. and together with the water worksn grounds will make an Ideal pleasure spot In the heart of the city. To Horticulturists A. J. Johnson his been delegated the responsible duty of laying out this park. Including the ar rangement In the landscape plan of the valuable trees and shrubs alre-.idy grow ing upon the ground. To this Mr. John son will add the V'O worth of plants ant tre.s from his nursery which he sii gen erously offered as his share of the ex pense of establishing the park. Now comes the Important work of grad ing and beautifying the grounds The park committee of the Association will vigorously prose'cilte this portion of the work. They confidently egpect the tv arty co-operation and e-ncouragement of the people. Many of the most prominent merchants and business men have al ready pledged their money and support. A little more nerve, a great deal of public-spirited generosity will enable the committee each year to do an appreciable amount of work on the premises. Who will be the first to put his pledge on Is work on this proje, t to be done by the ladies of the city. They have hel.l fairs and entertainments of all kinds for the benefit of the public library and church societies. Another fb ld Is open for their ingenuity. They can also donate flowers and plant them In beds set aside for the purpose Hut doubtless their own inventive minds will find many a way In which to aid In the good wark or Induce their liege lords to do It for tnem.
