But. In the opinion of the Astor. ian, the League is making at least one serious mistake at the outset of ita pro. feedings. The League does not Include all the taxpayers In Oaflsop county. Be. Ide those who are specifically pro. acrtbed from membership by Its rules and regulations, there is a considerable element of taxpayers and other good cftixena who will not care, for various reasons, to ally themselves with Its or ganisation. But few. If any. reforms the League ti'as in view can be accom plished without the confidence and co-op. eration of all good people, without as well as within the pale of its membership. Yet the League Is pursuing the very course most likely to breed public dls. trust In the integrity of Its motives and operations. There will be many who do not think the situation here calls for a star-chamber method of treatment. Its exclusion of office hoMers from Its mem bership, if coupled with secret delibera tions, will create a spirit of resentment and lead to the suspi -ton, doubtltss not intended, that it is designed as a slnls- ter reflection upon them. Surely th-re Is nothing which the league can law-, fully and legltraalely 'do that" needs to be withheld 'from the people. If there are jullc abuses needing correction, the ,v foest way to attack them Is to give the widest publicity to them. This Is the experience and history of all clvillzrd mankind. The actions of the League thus far savor too much of a conspiracy, and that is exactly the way it may he branded and ruined by politicians whom It has seen At to exclude, provided they do not take advantage 01 lis dark-!antern methods to capture Its organization'. The mystery and Indirection which has char acterized plans heretofore formulated for Astoria's advancement have embarrased these movements and operate as a bine upon our prosperity. It Is not necessary to particularize as to these examples. Tbey are known and have been felt by every discerning person In the commu nity. The Astorlan believes In the present sincerity of every member of the Lejgue. but It Is to be feared that sooner or later It will lose all capacity for usefulness, or degenerate Into an instrument of real mlBchief, if there is no change in its plan of doing business.
