The Maryland Court of Appeals is not scheduled to con vene until October, about one wek after the Cnverslty of Maryland opens its full term. Under ordinary procedure, Murray would be al ready matriculated in the School of Luw when his appuul would be heard but in an effort to keep him out entirely the University of Maryland lias asked that the hear ing on the appeul be advanced to the last part of August or the first of September so tliut a decision by the Court of Appeals can be ren dered prior to the opening of the school. The petition recites thut since the writ of mandamus in Murray's case svral other Negroes have ap plied for admission to the School of Luw, the Uhurmicists' School and the under-graduate college; that there are 2,000 students in the University of whom 500 are females, and H. C. Bird, Acting President of the University, states that he will not be responsible for what happens in case Negro stu dent# actually are admitted to the University. The ptltion sets forth a letter from a white man, one George M. Quirk, a resident in Washington, D. <\, who writes to inquire whether Negroes are to ha admitted and states the lie has three slaughters enrolled in tin l University whom lie wshes to re move from tho University if Ne groes are to be admitted. The Uni versity claims that it is threateud with extensive loss of students and that the consequen loss of income will seriously curtail its education al program.
