THE BELDING BANNER 15. It. COWUIN, Editor. THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1900. i:iTiu:it iiioni:. THE REPUBLICAN TICKET. For President William McKlnlcy of Ohio. For Vice President Theodore KooMvrlt of New York. For Congress, Fifth District -William Alden Smith. For Governor Aaron T. KIIm of Saginaw. For Lieutenant Governor U. W. Robinson of Houghton. For Secretary of State - I red W. Warner of Oakland. For State Treasurer Daniel McCoy of Kent. For Auditor General Perry V. Powerf, of Wexford. For Commissioner of State Land Oftlco 12. A. Wildey of Van Uuren. For Attorney General Horace fl. Oren of Chippewa. For Superintendent of Public Instruction Dclos Tall of Calhoun. For Member of State Hoard of Education James H. Thompson f Osceola. Disgust at the action of the Hryun crowd in ajjaln forcing the Mi to 1 dog ma on the Democratic party is being already expressed by leading members of the party. And this disgust is not confined to gold Democrat aione, for such a former free silver advocate as Gen. A .J. Warner, s;iys it is all nonsense. In a dispatch in the Cincin nati Enquirer ho is quoted as say kg: The idea of announcing that the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of Hi to 1 is a great moral principle'!- all nonsense," said he, "The ratio is a thing to be determined by Cougreis. Hero wo have the spec tacle of Oklahoma and Indian Terri tory and some of the smaller western states dictating to such states as Ohio, Indlanna, New York and Pennsyl vania. It is absurd. Uryan is honest and earnest, but he is surrounded by a lot of people who evidently control his views. It would be simply impossible to carry Ohio or Indiana o 1 any such platform as is suggested by the major ity of the resolution committee. The Germans will vote solidly against us. It forces 10 to 1 to the front as the par amount issue ot, the campaign. It is not that, but the Democratic party will have to defend it from the minute the platform with a 10 to 1 declaration in it is adopted. They are playiug right into the hands ot their opponents." Tho insane twaddle heard these days about "imperialism" is the merest partisan clap trap, as was the cry of Caesarism, raised against Gen. Grant, the greatest of all tho military defenders of tho union. There is not an imperialist in all this broad land today. This is a nation of patriots, of Americans who revere the free institu tions handed down to them. They love tho constitution and the stars and stripes, under whoso protection the republic has in less than a century and a quarter overtaken and passed all the other nations of the world in every thing that makes a people great and powerful and influential in the world. Michigan has the reputation of standing well up in front among the progressive states in the union which spend largo sums of money on their schools. The record for tho last school year, prepared by the superintendent of public instruction, shows that in this state $0,650, 4 80 04 was spent for all purposes upon tho graded and un graded schools. The census shows 713,090 children of school age, while 408,005 are enrolled. The total num ber of teachers employed aggregated 15,504, of whom 12,093 are women. The amount annually expended on- Michi gan's school system is three times as much as tho state tax levy. A contemporary, not a Itepublicin sheet either, says in a recent issue: If the Detroit Hvcning News could be in duced to continue tho publication of such scurrilous articles about Col. A. T. Illlss, tho Republican nominee for governor of Michigan, as appeared in that paper last week, until the election in November, we would bo willing to guaranteo a majority of "00,000 in the state for lilies. Such attacks are not arguments and only tend to make votes for the person they aro supposed to injure. Everybody knows that Mr. Hryan's predictions In 1896 of what would hap pen to tho country if tho Republican party camo into power havo been proven false, yet Mr. Bryan comes for ward again and makes some more pre dictions which he again asks tho public to believe. As a rule, when a man has been proven a false prophet onco the people hayo very little confidence in what ho may predict thereafter, and Mr. Hryan's casois no exception to the rule. "No one," says tho Hoston Host, a democratic paper, "will fail to note tho coincidence in point of time of the publication of the president's oiler of amnesty to tho Filipinos and tho meet ing of the nominating convention at Philadelphia." In tho same way At lanta unkindly fell on tho same day that tho democratic national conven tion In Chicago in 1804 declared tho war a failure. Coin Harvey, will find that tho pre sent campaign can get aldng without a new edition of his great work on how to get rich by multiplication. He Apologised International courtesies are to be ob served c 1 11 lu disreputable professions. Jostah 1'Iynt. who has shared the com pany of tramps in order to procure data as to their methods of living, re lates an Instance of true politeness from one of that unsavory brother hood. He says In "Tramping With Tramps:" "In (Jlasgow a fellow vagabond did me 11 g'd turn. We were walking along tho street, when three town tramps came along nnd 'guyed' my hat. My companion noticed it, and I told him I had suffered In that way before. Then ho turned sharply about on the scoflVrs and thundered out: " 'Who're you lookiu at? Ef you're tryln to guy this Yank, you'd better stop! I'f you don't, there'll be a fight!' " I.et's run,' said I, Mf you really mean that.' "'Nut much! I'm English, you know, and I can knock out any Scotchman that comes rouud. I'm in the mood for it light now." "The town vagabonds took him at his word ami left. Then I said to him, 'You Knslish fellows seem to have things pretty much your own way here.' " 'Yes,' said he; 'wo English fellers know how to bluff. We've been bluttln the world now for a good many years.' "'You forget the United States!' I could not help interjecting. " 'IJeg pardon, Yank said he. 'Beg pardon!'" Deceitful Mnn, Two men were standing together in a postollice. One of them happened to notice that a postcard held in the fin gers of the other was addressed to the holder. "Why, what does this mean?" he asked. "Do you address letters to yourself?" "In this case, yes," was the answer. "That's funny." "Well, not so very. See the other side." He held It up. and the other side read: "Urother Wank There will be a meeting of the 1. O. O. S. U No. IIS7, at the hall tonight to transact special business. Members not present will be lined $10. .1. It., secretary." "Yes, but I don't exactly catch on," protested the innocent. "Oh. you don't? Well, I got the cards printed myself. The society Is all a myth. When I wnnt to go out of an evening, I direct one of these cards to my house. I reach home, and my wife hands it to me with a sigh. I offer to stay home and stand the fine of - guineas, but of course she won't allow that. That's all, my friend, ex cept that the scheme is worked by hundreds of others, nnd the poor, de luded wives haven't tumbled to It yet." rnexirctel Opposition. While Lord Kitchener was engaged in suppressing the Prieska rebellion he ordered the destruction of a certain farmhouse.. Not seeing any 6igns of his orders being carried out, he rode over with his staff and found an Inter esting situation. In the doorway of the doomed farm house stood a pretty young Dutch girl, her hands clasping the doorposts and her eyes flashing tire from beneath her dainty sunbonnet. The Irish sergeant in charge of the party of destruction was vainly endeavoring to persuade her to let them pass in, but to all his blandishments of "Arrah darllnt, wisha now, acushln," etc., the maiden turned a deaf ear, and a deadlock prevailed. Kitchener's sharp "What's this?" put a climax to the scene. The girl evidently guessed that this wa.; the dreaded chief of staff, and her lins trembled In spite of herself. Kitchener gazed sourly at her, stand ing bravely though tearfully there, and turned to his military secretary. "Put down." he growled, "that the com mander's orders with reference to the destruction of nightman's farm could not be carried out owing to unexpected opposition. Forward, gentlemen." London News. It Met Requirements. Charles Iloyt, the farce writer, once Invited a friend to go to the theater with him. "What play?" queried his friend. "Nat Goodwin in 'Nathan Hale,'" said the playwright. "I'm very sorry," said the friend, "but you'll have to count me out." "What's the matter?" asked Iloyt In surprise. "Well, to be frank with you, I don't like Nat Goodwin In anything. I hate him personally and can't enjoy him as on actor, and, as far as I am concern ed, I wouldn't mind seeing him dead." "Then this Is your play," slyly added Mr. Iloyt In his peculiar Yankee dia lect. "You don't want to miss It. They hang him In the last act." News Let ter. Too Primitive. "No, Maria; I can't go to church until I possess a high hat and a frock coat." "Nonsense. Think of the primitive fathers of the faith nnd their humble altars.' "I should think you'd blush to men tion them, Maria. If I went to church ns a primitive father, they'd send me home In nn organ pipe." Cleveland Plain Healer. He Hnd Had Experience. At tho very outset Olivet set up a high standard of scholarship which it has never lowered for tho sake of num bers. As a result no college in the state ranks higher or is more widely or more favorably known. Through tho years tho college has steadily added to its plant and equip ment until tho institution has eleven buildings, fine museums, laboratories, a splendid library of 30,000 volumes, four literary societies, and a faculty of twenty-five drawn from tho leading in stitutions of America. Those conditions warrant Olivet col lege in assuming a more liberal policy in reference to students. For ono thing this policy takes tho form of es tablishing a free scholarship in a lim ited number of leading high schools of Michigan. This scholarship Is offered to that graduate in our high school whoso standing in studies is highest or next to tho highest, is good for tho coming school year, nnd is worth forty-live dollars. This will do much in solving tho problem of going to college, especially in view of the fact that at Olivet other expenses aro so moderato that, with economy, from $100 to $150 will suflico. Our superintendent has been notified of the action of tho college, and blanks placed in his hands to bo tilled out with tho name of tho fortunate winner.
