This seems to bo a year of double headers in tho Kojiubli can ranks in Michigan. In tho Twentieth senatorial district thoy have a double-header simi lar to Shelden-Ste)hen.Miu mud die. TlIE Negaunce Iron Herald was twenty-live years old last Saturday and to celebrate the occasion contained a brief review of the history of Negaunee dur ing tho twenty-live years of the Herald's existance. Editor (Jrilly enjoys the the distinction of being the pioneer newspaper man of the upper peninsula. We extend the Herald and its editor our hearty congratulations. Last week the Democrats of Connecticut discarded free silver a fow days afterward their brethren of New Jersey followed suit and last Thursday tho New York Democrats kicked it clear out of tho ring. Then comes tho Democrats of tho upper pen insula who held their congres sional convention last Saturday and they let the "nasty thing" alono by adopting no platform at all. Can it bo that the Demo crats of tho upper peninsula have seen a light? AT.IA7) ?)' THE TICKET. We have hoard tn tinners throughout tho county whbh tend to say that some Republi cans are going to'cut some of the candidates upon the Republican ticket at the corning election putting forth personal, and in many cases, foolish reasons for so doing. The greatest amount of this is heard in the case of tho ofiice of county clerk. Now in justice of all concerned there is not one valid reason why any Republican should vote against Frank Cole for that office. In the first place ho will make a clerk that tho people of this county need not be ashamed of for ho is competent both by way of education and training to hold the ofiice and do the work well. The tirst question that Judge Stone asked of a friend from this county whom he met shortly after tho convention was as to the qualifications of the nominee. "Kor." said the judge, "it takes a good man to keep the journal." That is saying a great deal. It takes a man of education and ability to till-, that ofiice. Mr. Cole has both of these. Can the people of this county a fiord to leave competency out of the question when one act of this olllcial may cost them great financial loss. Voters, think this matter over and the more you you consider it tho more the importance of it will be impressed upon you. One individual says that he is going to vote against Cole be cause ho is not a taxpayer and others are going to do so for the same reason. Let us ask" such people how much more of a tax payer is Mr. Cole's opponent than is Mr. Cole himself? That plea is simply rediculous. If the people want none but a tax paper they should have chosen such a man upon either ticket. Another reason we have heard suggested is that Mr. Cole is a young man. We want to ask all such people if the young men of this county are not entitled to a candidate upon the ticket. We have in Crystal Kails alone over 100 voters who aro young men. There is a proportionate amount throughout -the whole county. Are not these young men en titled, in all fairness anil justice, to a place upon the Republican ticket? Moveover they are all intelligent. They know what, it means to cast a vote and it is these young men that the county must rely upon in the future. Mr. Cole is their candidate and he should receive tho enthus iastic support of tho older class of voters for that reason. Hut above all Mr. Cole is a Republican. Wheeu he was defealed for a nomina tion two years ago out lit do as his opponent has dom today? Did he jump over and run for th ofiice upon tho Dem ocratic ticket? No! He sau that the will of the Republicans as expressed in their convention was enough for him and he turned in and helped elect hi suceessful rival. How many votes were, cast against the R publican ticket in the township of Mastodon two years ago when Mr. Colo had just as much right to "buck" tho Republican ticket as have the people of Stambaugh today. There was not one vote against the ticket and every vote thi re was recorded for Slam baugh's candidate for represent- live. vote tor uolo: ho is a competent man; he is a young man and he is a Republican every inch.
