legislature have been instructed
for him, or have publicly ex
pressed a preference for his re
turn to the United States senate.

Michigan is a unit for him. A
majority of the members from
eastern . Michigan favor him.
Ninety-live per cent of tho Re
publican voters in the state are
anxious for his continuance in
ofticc; they admire and love him.
Tho Republican party needs
him. demands his return, and
will have no one else.

a quarter of a century he has
been in public life and his recon

sat with McKinley in committee
and helped make the McKinley
tariff law. lb? took the place of
John Sherman on the senah

in framing the Dingley tariff
law. He was one of the senate
conferees who completed that
law, and he has just pride in its
benefits to American industry
Ho has always been for soun
money. For years he has aided
in making the Republican poli
cies which have won party vie
tories and brought everlasting
benefits to the American people
Ho has never failed to foste
and care for tho interests of
Michigan.
For a third of a centuy Sena
tor Hurrows has given constant
aid to the Republicans of Michi
gan and no one has done more
effectual party service. In tin
recent campaign he gave Michi
gah his undivided attention and
worked day and night from the

did more than he to win a com
plete party victory.
Under present conditions it
would be a party blunder
elect any one else. Under pros
ent sentiment it will be' party
treason for a Republican mem

thirteen majority in the lower
house of congress. In the senate
they have gained seats in New
York, Indiana, New Jeresy, Wis
consin, Delaware. Nebraska,
Cansas, Nevada, Idaho, Wy
oming1, North Dakota and Cal
ifornia.
In Ogemaw county, Mrs.
Marie H. Abbott was elected
irosecuting attorney, and in
ron county Mrs. Flewelling
was chosen circuit court com
missioner. An opinion rendered
by tho attorney-general is to
the effect that women under the
common law have no right to

difficult job upon their hands
this week and they performed it
to the satisfaction of both sides
to the the controversy, we think.
Their position was especially
difiicult when, in considering the
precinct of Crystal Falls, they
were compelled to establish a
rule of guidance in tho matter of
marked ballots. They decided
to count the votes with special
reference to the intention of the
voter in marking his ballot and
to disregard any identification
marks unless it was plainly
tho intention of tho voter
to so distinguish his oanoi
for identification. Under this
ruling only ballots that were
marked upon the back were dis
carded. The board is to be com
plimented upon tins manifest
fairness with which it decided.
