TREMENDOUS INCREASE IN PROHIBI TION SENTIMENT Already we have noted significant prohibition victories obtained in the campaigns that closed November 8. Excerpts from the Aunual Address of the National President and from the annual convention speeches of leaders in the various campaigns, show how utterly false and absurd are the state ments of the liquor trade, who claim that the public gave them a vote of confidence " Summing up the election returns, we And that the agitation and educa tion of the campaigns have given the country a tremendous Increase in pro hibition sentiment. The most im portant victories were in Tennessee and Oklahoma. The liquor trade in side and outside these states did their utmost to win votes for the protection of their vested interests. North Da kota reelected Governor Burke, who has, during two terms of office, en forced the prohibitory law of the state Not only Kansas, but a multitude of people across the state line in Missouri, who want the saloon voted out of that state, rejoice in the reelection of Gov ernor Stubbs of Kansas. In South Carolina, the county con taining the city of Greenville, voted azaiust the dispensary system. There re now only live non-prohibition counties, out of forty-two counties in South Carolina, which, we prophesy, will soon be numbered ib the prohibi tion states of the South. There are a number of other victories that have beeu brought to our attention. Two cities in the state of Washington Bellingham and Everett have declar ed for no license, as well as many of the smaller towns. In Los Angeles a large number of saloons were voted out. The defeat of Mr. Dahlman, the strong advocate of the saloon, for gov ernor in Nebraska means that the state Is facing prohibition probably the passage by the next legislature of a county prohibition law. A CHARACTER. He sowed, nud hoped for reaping A happy man and wise; The clouds they did his weeping, The wind it sighed his sighs. He made what Fortune brought him The limit of desire; Thanked God for shade in summer days, In winter time, for fire. When tempest, as with vengeful rod, His earthly mansion cleft, On the blank sod he still tbanked God Life and the land were left! Content his earthly race he ran, And died so people say Some ten years later than the man, Who worried his life away! A RELIABLE COUGH MEDICINE Is a valuable friend.
