DYNAMITE LARGELY INCREASES y YIELD OF DIFFERENT CROPS 1 By Use of Explosive Farmer Is Enabled to Blow Out Boulders and Stumps J Drain Marsh Land and Improve Soil ty Making it Porous Trees Make Rapid Growth. , An Explosion At last the American farmer has found a new way of raising bettor crops. He has put dynamite to an agricultural use. With dynamite he can blast stumps ;:nd boulders from fcla land, be can drain marsh land and make It usable, and he can improve th earth bo by shaking it up and mak ing It porous that trees, grain and vegetables grow with phenomenal ra pidity. This agricultural science has been us-d extensively for only two or three years. At firht the farmer was dubious und afraid of dynamite. He considered It a dangerous explosive, used only by anarchists and safe brenkerf. Hut the more progressive members of the agricultural frater nity tried the "newfangled scheme" said found it gocd. Crops were doubled 10 the acre, trees planted In dyna mited ground spread their roots through th loosened earth, drank in the moisture and nourishment and thrived wonderfully. Experiments were made with corn nnd other vegetables planted at the f ame tirm in lields side by side, one of which had been dynamited, the other only plowed. The product in the dynamited ground soon outstripped the other. Last year 2,'0,000 American farm ers used dynamite This year the ex jertB tell us .".00,000 fanners will use It. Knowledge is growing. Conse quently a new profession has sprung ii i that of the professional blaster. Many farmers want their fields dyna mited, but don't care to handle the ex plosive themselves. They would rath er mploy an experienced man, skilled in the us-e of dynamite, to do tli work for them, even if it does cost a little more. The professional blaster is a man used to handling dynamite, who knows how to explode it in the way that it will do the most good and no harm. He frequently goes about the country, advertising his coming beforehand in rural newspairs. Often the; branches out, becomes a contractor and has eeveral crews of experienced blasters under him. There are a great many more young men learning agricultural blasting in this country loday than there are learning to build aeroplanes.- Dynamite, while a dangerous explo sive, is not half as dangerous as most persons think It. Handled by a skilled jerson, who Is used to it and knows PLAN OF FRESH nf . 4 . ! n ST I j t -nr j 5 . i nTi gjj ll n' : a 1 i 1 1$ I I I The Maine experiment efation has published the above plan of brooder Men can bo arranged in the corner of hen house. Anar chists, as a matter of fact, do not use dynamite in bomb-throwing, and nei ther do burglars use it in "cracking" safes. What they use is nitroglyver inc. Then; is an erroneous and widespread impression that a dyna mite cartridge? will explode if dropped on the ground or thrown against the body of a person. The efforts of the government and the leading railroads to perfect plans and methods for draining the vast area of swamp now covering millions of acres of rich, verdant soil have directed the atten tion of the general public toward the importance of increasing the culti vated area of the country. The importance of any farm, coun ty, state or nation, varies almost di rectly in proportion to tbe extent of its cultivated area. Many southern st.ites vim be doubled in productive area by proper drainage of twamps and clearing of cut-over lands. The area of swamp and cut-over lands in this country Is greatly in excess of the total cultivated area. Hence any means of bringing these lands into cultivable shape; is of the highest im portance. If often happens that swamps and marshy lands are caused by hard-pan underneath. There is no outlet by which the water can run off and as it cannot sink Into the earth it stands there, rendering the land useless and breeding disease. Iiy using dynamlto these conditions can be removed. The hardpan is usually only a few feet below the surface of the marsh top soil. With an extension auger a hole is bored to the bottom of the hardpan. Into this hole several dyna mite cartridges are lowered and "tamped." The top cartridge is primed with a blasting cap. In ditching with dynamite the first thing done is the locating of the pro posed ditch. Then the width and depth are decided on. Holes are punched at intervals of about two feet along the course of the center of the ditch. In ach of these holes a cartridge is dropped and 'tamped'' In with some mud. A row of ten cart ridges is made 150 or 200 feet long and only the center cartridge is primed with a fuse and blasting cap. This method of blasting, where only the center cartridge Is primed, is only uwd in damp and compact coil. AIR BROODER If D HOPI HANS Transformation at the Carlisle School for, Savages. Red Men Captured by Regulars Havi Become Civilized World's Best Long Distance Runner Is Among Them. Carlisle, Ta. That a misunderstand ing of the white manV motives ha been one of the causes of the Indian's backwardness In adopting civilized methods and of his fighting educa tion is being demonstrated here at the government Indian school, where 12 members of the Hop! nation, sun worshipers and pagans, who came here five years ago virtually as pris oners cf war, are now preparing to go back to their people and spread the doctrine of the new life, which they have gladly accepted. A half-dozen years ago the IIopl na tion was causing considerable trouble In Arizona. Internecine strife had di vided the tribes and a troop of United States cavalry was sent post haste to the Keam'B canyon region to restore peace. After pow-wows and confer ences, in which the Indian leaders sternly refused to adopt the white man's education, twelve of the most obstinate "stand-patters" were taken as prisoners and sent from the Mo cpii agency, in Arizona, to the Carlisle Indian school. The party arrived here January 2G, 1907. All of these In dians were members of the Oraibl band of the Hop! nation. Among them were several priests and head men of the tribe. When these savages arrived at the Carlisle school they would have noth ing to do with any of the other stu dents, and began to live their lives apart. In less than ten days one of the Hopis indicated by gestures that he would like to have his hair cut like the other students, and on the same day another Hopl was discover ed snipping off his own locks with a hunting knife. From the moment the Hopis showed their first Interest in education they advanced rapidly and became eager in their desire to learn more. They entered the lowest grades in the class rooms, but as they were attentive to their studies, were kindly disposed to their teachers, and caused not the slightest trouble, they climbed stead- Co right, I'bdt rwoud A I'mlcrwooil, X. All were assigned to devote some portion of their time to vocational training, tome entering the blacksmith shops or carpenter thops, and Lewis Tewanl ma, the crack Marathon runner, Is de veloping Into an expert tailor. "When these Hopl boys return home this summer they will be leaders among their people and fight for both education and righteousness. Now all speak English, all read and write; they are courteous and are gentlemen. They have kept in continual touch with their people, and already their influence has been noticeable in the Hopi country." ' Iewis Tewanlma, one of these same savages five years ago, is today the greatest long-distance runner in the world, and two years ago, while rep resenting America at the Olympic games in Paris, won the main Mara thon event. He will represent this country at the next Olympic games. Washington Taljumptewa has also achieved a national reputation as t, long-distance runner. Kettle on Stove 2,000 Years. Naples.
