Although many attempts have, been made up to a very recent date it has been impossible to propagate oysters artificially, but within the last year Prof. Julius Nelson, biologist for the state bureau of shell fisheries of New Jersey, has succeeded in propagating oyster germs or seed, says the Chicago Chronicle. If a female oyster be jabbed with a knife ia the right way the knife point will be smeared with a milky-looking substance, in which by the aid of a microscope, can be seen tiny eggs hav ing the general shape of minute oys ters. If the same ' proceeding be gone through with for the male and the two fluids mixed In salt water fertilization will occur in about ten minutes, and in about an hour the first development of the egg begins. After 24 hours the shells begin to come and the oysters are in a fair way to grow tu. At the first impregnation, although many male sperms adhere to one egg, it is shown by the microscope .that if more than one enters the egg a monstrosity results which wll) not develop. The great difficulty at present Is to keep the minute oyster fry from es caping from the sea water tank in which they are enveloped, but this croblem la la a fair wav of solution. and the day may not be far off when the oyster can get bis oyster seed In the earliest stages of Its development and ready to "set" on the shells plant ed for them. Yoana Bride aad Oreea Borrowed All Faraltar of a Ncia-a - ' borlac Hoi. A curious story eowercing an easy method of starting in housekeeping comes from Jefferson county, says the Utiea Journal. A Watertown woman owns a house In a small village and oc cupied it prior to May 30 last, but on go ing to that city to live she locked it up. leaving the furniture Inside. A few days ago she went to the village to see how her property was getting along, and greatly to her surprise she found that the furniture had disappeared. A little later, while looking around in the vicinity, she saw a brand new pump, which she had recently purchased, in the well on the premises of a neighbor. Following up this clew, she called at the house, and there found her entire outfit of furniture, carpets and dishes. The dwelling was occupied by a man and hit wife who had been married only a couple of weeks, and the former said he had found the house of the Watertown woman open, and, be lieving thtt the owner would not object, he' had borrowed the goods. He waa evi dently repentant, readily returned the furniture, and paid the woman $10 for its use.
