APRIL It 1907 The financial situation which eaused the business sky to be threat enly clouded a little while ago is now said to be clear again. All danger of business disturbance from that source is declared to have passed by. j Indeed the situation is in many respects better than before the j flurry, by reason of the lesson it conveyed. Moderation and con servatism instead of risk and excite ment are now features of the finan cial centers. Those upon whom re sponsibility for results in legitimate lines of Industry rest will be heart ily glad that the way is cleared for their success through the present year so far as matters relating to money markets and the country's finances are concerned. Last week's election should be satisfactory to the republicans of Michigan as the majority for their candidates on the state ticket will be in the vicinity one hundred thous and. The vote on the ammendmcnt to the constitution making it pos sible to continue the employment of prison labor was evidently largely assisted throngh the desire to re' move all hindrances to the proposed feiader-twine plant so earnestly vrged by Governor Warner. Id some cities and counties the demo, crats deserted their state candidates and adopted other organization names in order to assit in the elec tion of local candidates. As the last state contest preliminary to the Important presidential election of next year the results of last week's voting was decidedly helpful to Michigan republicans and the pur poses their party represents. Some further movement of per manent value may come . from tbe recent meeting of prominent repre sentatives of labor and capital at at the homo of Andrew Carnegie in New York. An arrangement and agreement which will give more . force and value to arbitrat.on legis lation than it has thus far seemed to possets, Is one very desirable result such a gathering might assist. The forced idleness of thousands of men, closing down of Important in dustries, tbe destruction of proper lies, the commission of various crimes, even to murder, are some of the accompaniments of past contests (between capital and labor which h04j(d never be rep?ated. They suggest barbarism rather than civil izatioa's best days, and the means through which this reptition shall fee prevented would rank In the highest importance as a more than national achievement. It Is encoiir ngtatf to know thai this is the view F Um) subject now held by tbe most Influential representatives of both capital and labor i'r the benefit of those within j t f.asjp political line, who may be In tereated to the matter, it can be rU'ed with little frar of contradic tion, that If PreaidVni R h-v It i not again the repuoiicun nomirtt-e for president 1 the nominee will tie man who will beat represent ibe president's sympatbien ami purpose in legislative and nationul direction?. Mr. Roosevelt can ue bin own suc cessor if be will, but whether he ia or not there is no opposition to his efforts and accornplisiiineijia within lie repuoiicun Daily winch would receive the blighicni attention iu national oonveniiou. , President Rooaevelt ban not in uMHk'l instano departed from th pini and delaru tiou of the national republican plat form accompanying his candidacy f r prebident, and linre has been no change in party teiitiineiil or pur pom which would prmii opposing action in the next convention. The New York Times Iihh bent a number of letters ii Michigan ask ing as to whether PrfaioVnt Rooae veil is as popular and astttrong with the voters as be was at the time of his election. It is hardly to be questioned that the answer , to the New York paper's query will show that Roosevelt has iost nothing of his nonularitv with all classes of people in this state. HJ may have disregarded implied obligations to political friends and disappointed former personal friends, but he has not broken a promise nor has he failed in any of hi obligations to duty as he sees it His disposition may not be angelic and be may over much incline to controversy and contest, but his controversies and contests thus far have been just such, a very large majority of the people could enjoy and cordially ap prove.
