The Poineer Press is pleased to , rind iu plea for better nnd more economical meth ods of farming, repeated and enforced by those most familiar with the condition oi the agricultural inlercfd. 'm lollowiu!" htaieiucut is from The Farmer: Xot all tiumers go into bankruptcy at wheat raising even ut present pi lee, 11 ml some actually make money with wlie.it at 00 ceutc u bushel. A '"bull" on I lie Ckicngo board of trade may be well posted and speak within bouuds tit his own ex perience, when lie states that wheat cannot be probuced for 40 cents per hu&hel in Dakota, llow ever a representative of the Farmer, a tew days uo, visited, n largtj model Dakota farm, the IJrandm Bros. farm, at Mayvilie, Traill county, where li beller results are obtained. W. W. War ren, Esq., general manager, courteously exhibited some figures, which, without giving in detail, we may say amount to this: that a crop of somethinif over 150,000 bushels of wheat, averaging nearly twenty-five bushels per acre, costs, from time of seeding until stored in elevutors (including interest on capital, wear on machinery, wages, incidentals.ctc.,) a little less than 21 cent3 per bushel. While the soil and location of this farm Is excellent, we know of no special superiority of quality above good, average Red River valley soil. The results arc the legitimate reward of- business methods nnd thorough system, from breaking to marketing. The low price of wheat is, of course,-nn unqualified misfortune. But, the fact existing through . circumstances beyond anybody's control, the practical question is, how to make the best of it. If the fanner loses ut one end of the business, he niiit iry to gain at the other. If wheat his fallen in the world's market?, he must make good the dent-it by decreasing the eo.-t of production. Tho thing can bs done by increasing the yield per acto. In esti mating the cost of production, the cost ot labor in plowinir, seeding, harvesting, threshing and marketing, per acre, are added together. Tho total is divided by the average yield per acre, giving the ave r age cost of production per bushel. Now, it is obvious, that, if tho expenditure on tin acre is dividen by thirteen, the average number cf bushels raised to the acre, the resulting eost of production will be neaily twice as great us if we were to divitie by twenty-five, the number of bushels per ucie .which the rich soil of ihe Northwt i will easily yield under thorough cultivation. We desire to make this argument fair, as earnest. The cost of production given in the case cited by The Farmer less these 21 cents per bushel is below the average figuri. It holds good .for "urge farming, where tho product is 1"0,000 bushels, and where the economies of conducting any business on a large scale and according 10 the wholcsala plau, can be broughUnlu play. But tho saving is there, all the same. A close computation made some lime ago, shows that the cost of wheat produc tion,' by the old, wasteful system, is, to the large farmer, from 40 to o0, and to the tinall farmer from o0 to 00 cents per bushel. This is on ihe basis of an average yield of not more tlun 15 bushels per acre. Now, whut do we.lind? The large farmer, by adopting the careful methods hi use in older and more economical communities, by thorough cultivation and summer fal lowing, can raise his average crop to 2." bushels per acre. 'The cost of raising the greater amount being about the same as that ot tun less,' it foil Iowa that, for him. the cost of production is reduced nearly one half. That margin Is clear profit. The small farmer can tlo the Ramo t liinj-. By better cultivation, ho can. at little, if any greater expense, stcuro the same yield of 24 bushels per acre. , That would lower th'f cost of production to him from be tween 50 and 00, to between -:$0 and 40 cents per bushel. There would be n verv comfortable .profit in that, even Willi wheat at, lower prices thau it has reached, or is likely to reach. We desire for Hi" farmer of the Northwest every lulvnat.ii' possible. Wo hope that he may have low. cr taxes, and railroad freight rates n. n a ponable ns are anywhere known. But. with nil tlie h! must still work out his iw talvaiion.
