Why do 80 nmny complain of ealsscs no' cxacujr suited to trieir vision? Ii your eyes ure no ma!, perhaps yu don't care. But you will if you live, "ion ure driftin? toward the use of spectacles by a law us inexoiablo an tho yrave. The folluwin flv pi-ints explain: 1. Jjtearjy nil eyes, to some extent, Astigmatic; the majoriiy slightly, but mauy seriously so. Sueh an eye, unlike a normal one, is not equally convex oh all sides, being cylindrical in shape. Only a lens wuone suriace is correspondingly cylindrical will lit it. ' As spherical lenses ass it, in a measure, in many cases needing cynnuncais unu as uio latter are liltle known or appreciated, few deahrs are prepared in tty eyes that requiro them. Alany, therefore, are ntted imperfectly, and fco injuriously. After much effort and expense, the evil remedied by the Johnston Opiiical Co., of Detroit, Alien., who hare invented an unrivaled iu-trumcnt. patented by them uuder the name of tho Diopiric Eye Meter, which fits all kinds and Com binations of Astigmatism, Miopia, Hyper mctrophia. Presbvopia, &c. 2. Astigmatic or cylindrical eyes differ greatly, me cylindrical mxis is Jound at different angles. To determine the angle in eacn case, some apparatus or insiiu ment is absolutely necessary. Tnc Eye- jtieier supplies mis necessity. Wituout its aid the cylindrical eye is cure to be misfitted 3 Eyes often seem fitted when they arc not. One may be cyl ndi ical and the other spherical Then the latter gets fitted and so does air tho work. Or, both may be f phcrical, but one stronger than the other, and then it alone is apt to receive the fit. Passable sight being secured with a single eye, ihb patient is unconscious that his other eye is failing to perform its function, besides being injured by its abnormality aud mUfit. The Eye-Meter exposes this ignorance and fits each eye separately. 4. The most comm casts calling for optical treatment are defecti in spherical eyes, which, like cylindrical eyes, need tho test of tho instrument. It is so easy to gratify tho patient with a lens which gives apparent help and yet docs harm, that the temptation is stromr to make the lest so partial and superficial as not to discover the more setious and infrequent defects. Thus, fifty per cent perhaps.are Imperfect ly fitted, and a large percentage of Myopic, Hypermetropic ami Presbyopic, to say nothing of Astigmatic cases, are never fitted at all, especially among school children and students. The patient often has himself to blame for not securlnji a thorough examination of his eyes, to learn whether they are defective or not. Fre quently the muscles continue vigorous enough for a while, to coricct in part, by severo exertion, any malformation of. the eye, and thus conceal tho necessity of spectacles, But ultimately this unnatural strain leads tr their collapse, and perhaps paralysis and ruin. By good right every eyo should be examined. Tho prejudice that it is belter to postpone the use of glasses as long as possible, is an absurd, unscientific superstition. Properly fitted spectacle preserve the sight. The use of the Eye-Meter insures a thorough test. 5. Occasionally no eye has both spher ical and cylindrical defects, and requires a compound lens, combining the cylindrical with tho spherical form. The Eye-Meter tetg for such a lens in a manner most ingenius and accurate, a feature which alone has secured for it the sanction and encomiums of Eye Infirmaries nnd Oculists of the highest authority in the country. Cylindrical lenses must be ground to order, no two cases being identical. Impossible as it thus is to keep them in stock, it is equally impossible to test eyes .needing them, without tho aid of the Eye-Meter. But with It and the instructions for its use. one becomes a skillful optician. IJ. El. A correspondent of the Flint Journal, writing from Durand savs acive operations on the Saginaw & Durand railroad have begun and everything indicates the early com pletion of the road About 40,000 ties are piled in e ery yard and "the steel is beginning to arrive. , Grading is going on at various points between Durand and Flushing It is expected that the road will be completed by July 1st Railroad connection with Saginaw has seemed to give new life to Durand; While getting railroad facilities that mary good cities might envy. Durand has remained a little hamlet of less than 300 inhabitants. With an excellent shipping; facility it has nothing to ship During the past year several parties have tried to get control of the land around the town but until recently have failed During the present week a party of St. Johns and Ovid men has secured about 200 acres adjoining Main street on the north Besides this 80 acres were recently purchased on the south side by Flint parties. These two purchases together almost encircle the town. The prospects are that an "Improvement Association" will be formed in a lew days with capital large enough to protect the interests of the place and to demonstrate the fact that unexpected shipping facilities do have something to do with the growth and permanency of a town's prosperity. St. Johns Independent: A syndi cate of capitalists have purchased 213 acres.ot land in the village of Durand and propose to make it a manufact uring center. The village bis three railways and anothtr is headed that way. The gentlemen composing the syndicate are as follows: Chas.
