What are known as the periodical comets
are those which revisit our skies at stated in
tervals. Encke's comet, which was first seen
in 1786, passed its perihelion on the 7th of
March last. It returns regularly every three
and one-third vears. TJlber's comet, which
was fliBt seen In 1815 ought to put in an ap
pearance shortly, as its periodicity is about
seventy-five years. Halley's comet, whoe
period is also seventy-five years, has been traced
back as far as 1456, since which it has made
five recorded returns. It is not due until 1911.
Switt's comet, wbich has a period of five and a
half years, ought to show up toward the end of
this year. Turtle's comet, which has a period
of thirteen and a half years, is due in July of
the present year. Then the unexpected may
happen in the way of comets.
An inventor in Ohio U said to have discov
ered a cheap method of producing the metal
aluminium. If be has succeeded be deserves a
statue as high as that of Ilartboldi's at the en
trance o! the New York harbor. This is the
most abundant metal on this earth, as it is the
basis of all clay soils, yet so far it has been al
most classed as a proclous .metal, so diltlcult
has it been found to separate it from the other
substances w ith which it is amalgamated. Re
cently, however, it has teen reduced to about
$10 a pound, which is remarkable progress in
view of the fact that it is not many years since
it was jsaj an ounce, lliis metal is as tough
and strong as steel, and is proof against corro
sion by acids or oxydization. Its great value
is that it is only one-third as heavy as steel. If
cheap enough all our domestic utensils would
be made of it, and it would take the place of
steel and tin, and would be the material tor the
body of the air-ship of the future. Its use
would revolutionize the whole art of war.
Armor was discarded because too boavy as
defensive suit against fire-arms, but the riilo
has led to a demand for an armor that would
permit an army to mnnojuvro on the liald in
sight of an enemy. This is now almost im
possible because of the great distance at wbich
a rifle can wound or kill. Were aluminium
cheap enxugh, it is so light, that it could be
ised for breast-plates and helmets, and would
take the place of steel and wrought iron on
armored vessels. The greatest industrial rovo
lulions will occur when the method is finally
uisco voi ed by which this nietul can be used
economically.
