BR ATTLEBORO SOCIETY. Old Board of (selectmen And Road Com missioner Eaines VS In Hands Down- Debt to be Kelunded and Opera House Expenditure Approved Mill Liberal and Inconsiderate In Voting Away Money Some Cnpleasant Episodes. Town meeting Tuesday was a pro tracted one, as expected, but developed less uglines than had been looked for. The feeling was there in full abun dance, as evidenced by tho fact of one of tho largest attendances we ever had, but with some skillful management on one side and ill timed assaults on tbe other, it did not have serious results. Provision was made in full to pay for the opera house project, as we are bound by every consideration of honor and good faith under the cireum stances to do. Any payment of debt for this year was stopped, and a plan adopted for refunding under an enab ling act of the legislature and to strengthen it by mixing in the town bouse and opera house debt with it. Tho five per cent, tax for macadam road was nut voted, but everything else asked for or proposed was voted, and the only positive and definite pro posal to bring in little money, in the Angeln matter, was oveiwhelmiug ly voted iown. On the whole it was a sorry beginning towards the policy of economy which the town ha.i got to adopt, if it is to grow and prosper. Tbe old board of select meu was handsomely vindicated by a re-election with majorities ranging from between two and six to one. It was an expres- . siou of appreciation of good service in j the main, though issues, like that of jthe troliey and widening Maple street, j which made the Esteyviile vote solid, ; were involved. Mr. B .yden who jlu-aied the opposition ticket, like the : ever courteous gentleman he ia, made I no attack on the old board wL'hh good i service in a general way lie conceded, j standing rather as a second test on tbe : trolley and town ha!! issuin on which ' he was defeated last year. As a mat ' tor of pcrinal strength purely, it is ! probably safe to say that lr. Webster j is the oniv man in town that could lia.e beateu him. There was a close content over the town treasureshiti, with Cashier W. H. Hrac'ett of the People's bank as the candidate against Mr. Dowley. The contest was not personal, no ono questioning the qual ifications of either man, but between the banks, the argument bring that one has had the town businesw so long that it oueht to be changed to the other. But against this were the con siderations, which prevailed of Mr. Dowley's skillful work for the towu iu the past and his long and 9troug financial connections, enabling him to handle largo matters with a faciltiy that few in Xew England ran match, as illustrated by the fact that in the panic time he was able to carry some jls.000 of loans for the town at five per cent where the money market run from S to 30. The meeting opened promptly at 9 o'clock, the lirst article being action on the auditors report, when H. B. Chamberlain presented two bills, each iM, of J G. Stafford and Geo. H. Thomas for service to town school dis triet Col. Thomas Hannon moved at the I. J waiting above. Tuesday morning the j that they be paid, but X. T. Ryan mail was taken up on a hand car and Wednesday it was brought down on the work train. Supt. McKenz train .Master Allen . and Gen. Roadmaster objected that it was a matter thai village voters had nothing to do with, and so the motion was made bv H. W. Xew London i Stone tif the town district and carried.
