Polk County Observer H0LD mcilar meeting ALLGOOD fe COLLINS LESSEK3 Published Semi-Weekly at 1 .50 per Year. Strictly iu Advance. Knt.rM HA Rpcond-ctatiS mutter March 1. l;HI7, at the post office at Dalim, Otegon, under the Act of Congress 01 March 6, I&.v. DALLAS, OREGON, FEBBUARY 9, 1909 The way to build up Dallas is to pat ronize Dallas people. Speaking to an immense crowd in Tampa, Florida, Thursday, W. J. Bryan said he brought to the Demo crats of the South a message of pood cheer and declared there is a steadily increasing sentiment that makes for the growth of the Democratic party in the I'nited (States. He declared nrosriects were hrighter than ever for Democratic victory in 1012. "Hark, from the tombs, etc." Says the Albany Democrat "The average citizen has supreme contempt for the present Legislature." What? This to the people of Oregon, who flattered themselves only a short time ago on having selected the ideal Leg islature, the Legislature that should crystallize into realities all the roseate dreams that have been forming, lo, these years, in the smoke of the cen sers they have been burning before the little gods of Populism? Tut, tut! The measure proposed to compel all legislators introducing bills "by re quest" to explain their source and the forces behind them is a wise one The "by request" cloak may be handy to use for the purpose of shifting the responsibility of idiotic or permicious measures proposed, but anonymous bills like auonymous letters are not worthy of the consideration of those who aro supposed to be working openly and above boaid for the beneilt of the conimonweulth. Brownsville, a city of loss inhabit ants, and less facilities for communi cation with the, larger trade centers than our own city, has shown that Its people are possessed of the true spirit of progress and a civic prldo that bodes well for its future, by the hearty manner in which they are lending themselves to the work of carrying on a publicity campaign, which was re cently inaugurated there. From the very beginning, their universal motto has seemed to be "lioot" and the results already obtained have been remarkable. D.tllm is entering upon a similar work, the success of which depends, not upon the efforts of a few, but upon tin' labors of all. Will the people of Dallas respond as unan imously and substantially as the peo ple of lirowiisville have done? In the answer to thi3 qiit-stion lies the key to the success or failure of the venture. The Merchants' Protective Associa tion held its regular semi-monthly business meeting last night, a goodly number of the members being in attendance. The business transacted was principally routine work. The committee on the subject of hir ing the nightwatchman reported that it had been found that the work of the present nightwatchman was perfectly satisfactory to the business men of the city, but recommended that in accordance with the suggestions made attheprevious meeting, steps be taken to arrange for paying the sums for the maintainaneo of a night watch man to the City and for having him act entirely nndr its jurisdiction. The committees on the telephone and rat ingquestions gave no report not being fully prepared at the time. Near the close of the meeting, Bob Harmon laid a plan twfore the Asso ciation for organizing a baseball team, and securing and maintaining a baseball park in Dallas. Mr. Har mon firmly believes that Dallas has the material for a winning team and that, once started it would be a self- supporting institution and one that would do much to bring people into the city to trade. Mr. Harmon's plan received the hearty sanction of the Association and he will go about the preliminary woik at once, so as to have the team organized and ready for training as soon as the weather moderates. Mr. Harmon has been working among the business men of the city this morning and reports that he is meeting with great success. Professor Angell to Lecture. A press dispatch from Corvallis says: "rrolessor Lmmett Dunn Angell who appears at the Opera House, Saturday Dight, February 13, giving a demonstration of the real and unreal of psychic phenomenon has appeared as demonstrator before some of the largest institutions of this country, among them being Harvard, Vale, Columbia and the University of Wisconsin. He is considered one of the best versed di moDstratois ol psychic phenomenon on the public platform today. In all bis demonstra tions he attempts to show the trutli3 and untruths of spiritualism ami mental telepathy ; exposes a great many feats of so called telepathists and spiritualists. Spiritualistic cabi net seances are given and afterwards exposed, giving the public a general idea how they may be duped by spir itualists claiming to have supernat ural power. William Irvine Kiddell, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kiddd! Jr., of Monmouth died Friday, Feb ruary 5, agetl 7 months. Funeral services were held at the home of Kev. L. L. Hoover, of the Evangelical Church, Elder Wood, of the Christian Church, offioaiting. The remains were interred in the Monmouth cemetery. Mr. an. I Mrs. Kiddell have the sym pattiy of the entire neighotiiodd in their sad bereavement. The Dallas College basketball team will meet the team from Newberg in the College pymnuslum Friday night. This game will be the second with Newberg this year. Dallas lost out in the other game by a single point and the game Fiiday night is likely to be a hot one as the two teams are so nearly matched and a victory at this time means much in the struggle for places in the League. Advocates of extended common school education in this state scored a notable victory Thursday when Kepre sentative Hawley's bill, requiring that at least six months' school be taught annually in every school dis trict in the state, passed the House with only one dissenting vote. Mr. Hawley, author of the bill, Speaker McArtlnir, Itrooke, P.rumlon ami Itouebrake all warmly championed the measure, which they declared was in the interest of the small and out lying school districts, where under the present system children desiring au education were not furnished adeutiate school advantages.
