NG Y 1ft 11 The New Are Out Always $3.00 EXAMINATIONS ARE ON Smallest Class of Applicants Several Years Writing For Teachers' Certificates. For The smallest class in many years of applicants ror teachers' certificates, is writing on the semi-annual examin ations at the courthouse this week. Forty applicants are writing for state papers, 17 for county papers and the work of 7 others will be sent In for grading In Polk county, making and actual total of only 61. The aver age for years has ranged between 76 and 125. In the whole list of 64, there are only seven men taking the examinations, four for county papers. From that fact, the claim that mail teachers are rapidly retiring from that field of work, seems well sustained. A number of the teachers from remote districts are staying in the city while the examinations continue, but many residing in Monmouth and Independence come over each morn ing for their examination work and return home on the evening motor. The examinations for county pa pers will close tonight and the appli cants will be able to learn the results of the grading some time tomorrow. The state exam inations will continue until Saturday night. The grades on those papers cannot be given so promptly as in the case of the county examinations owing to the fact that the papers must be sent to the State Board. Assessor C. S. Graves returned Wed nesday from Salem, where be had been summoned to appear with the other assessors of the state before the State Equalization Board for the pur pose of giving them the information necessary in its work regarding the 1909 state levy. Pepper and Clark Groves went to Salem, Tuesday afternoon, to present a petition from the people of Dallas to the State Legislature, ask ing that under the local option law the precinct be madetbe unit instead of the county, thus giving cities the power to regulate the sale of liquor within their own limits Independent of rural precincts which would be in noway effected by the city govern ment. A Kansas paper contains the follow ing concerning a family reunion at which Mrs. K. L. Coad, formerly of Buell, was present: "On January 20, 1909, all the brothers and sisters of J. A. Lotspeich met with htm and his family at their home near Randall, Kansas, for a reunion. Four brothers and four sisters are still living, the youngest of whom is 48 years of age and the oldest 67. An interesting feature of this reunion was the pres ence of one sister, Mrs. K. L. Coad, from Oregon, who had not met with the family for more than twenty-five years." '09 WANT THREE SCHOOLS Bill For Appropriation For Only One Normal Re-referred To Ways and Means Committee. me Normal school battle was opened in earnest in the House Wed nesday, when the bill for an appro priation for a single centrally located school was brought up for considera tion. "Advocates of three normal schools won the opening skirmish in the House by a vote of 38 to 21 the bill recommended by the committee on ways and means was rejected. At the same time the House re-referred the bill totuat committee with Instructions to make provision for the three schools at Weston, Ashland and Mon mouth. The bill came up as a special order at 10 o clock in the morning, Jones, Lincoln and Polk, immediately moved the re-referrence of the bill, with Instructions that provision be made for state support of the three schools as recommended by a majority of the Board of Normal School Reg' ents. Hawley, also of Polk, the borne of the Monmouth school, supported Jones by contending that the geog raphical conditions of the state are such as naturally to require at least three normal school f. Opponents of the Normal school combination, however, gained one slight advantage when, by a standing vote of 32 to 18, they adopted a motion instructing the ways and means com mittee to report three separate bills providing separate appropriations for each of the three schools." Confer On Water Rates. The committee appointed by the city council held a conference with Hon. H. V. Gates, proprietor of the Dallas waterworks, yesterday for the pur pose, principally, of discussing a pro posal for lowering the water rates. Mr. Gates offers as soon as the council shall pass ordinances doing away with unsanitary con ditions in the sewer districts, to place meters on the sewer sevice, the result of which will make a material reduction in the cost of that service to the water users. The proposition of the purchasing of the water system by the city, at a price to be set by a board of arbitration, was rejected by Mr. Gates. The time limit ou his other offer to sell at a flat figure of $10,000 has expired and it appears improbable that he will offer the city another opportunity to buy. Castle's The Grocery For You.
