B. Barker, Sentinel. After the Installation exercise were concluded an elegant banquet wa served In tba banquet hall of the lodge, Pursuant to a call published In the last two Issue of the Globk a large and enthoalaslle meeting wai held In Armory hall last Saturday afternoon for the purposed discussing the feasibility of constructing a railroad between Condon and the Columbia river. More than 100 representative cltiaeo of the county were present, almost every, locality In the county being represented, and the nnanlmou sense of the meeting wa that a railroad can and (boo id be built by the people of thi county. The lubiect wa pretty thoroughly discussed by a number of speaker, the keynote of each addrese being la effect "W need a railroad. We must have a railroad, and w caa and will build a railroad." ..::, Mayor Dunn called tbe meeting to order, and on motion W. B. Myers wa elected chairman of the meeting, and S. A. Pattlson secretary. The chairman made a few remarks slating the object ol tbe meeting and called on B. T. Snell of Olex for a speech. Mr. Snell haa taken much Interest in tbe local trans portation problem for several year and ha taken some trouble to secure infor mation In relation to tbe subject Hi remark were listened to with much interest. He believe that with proper organlaatlon the people of this county can readily build, own and operate railroad, and favor a narrow gaoge road. for tbe reason that tbe coat of construc tion and equipment will be very mate rially let than would be a standard gauge line. Jlr. Snell wa followed by 8. B. Barker, Ed Dunn, R. B. Lucaa, L. J. Johnson, W. J. Edwards, B. K. Searcy and other speakers, all of whom were In accord on tbe main proposition. vis, for a rallrord, to be built, owned and operated by tbe people of Gilliam county. Some of the speaker advocated a narrow gauge line, other a standard gauge, and one speaker was of the opinion that an electric motor line would prove to be tbe bett aud the cheapest. Mr. Searcy and other speakers who advocated a aUndard gauge road based their objection to tbe narrow gauge on the cost of transferring freight at the junction of tbe O. R. At N. During tbe course of the discussion of tbe whole matter the interesting fact wa brought out that tbe crop of 1900 In tbe territory contiguous to the pro- .posed road, and which will be bandied by It in the event of it construction, aggregates in round numbers 1,000.000 bushel, and the cost of transporting the same to Arlington by wagon amount to the somewhat startling mm of 186.000. Tbe figures on tbe amount of wheat grown were secured from tbe different tbretbermen of tbe county, and the coat of hauling la based on 12 eta. -per bushel lor all wheat grown south of the Hay creek botte. and 5 cent per bushel for all grown north of that point After considerable discussion of the question at issue a committee of five wa appointed to report an order of butinesa for tbe meeting, the committee consisting of B. T. Snell, Ed Dunn, W. J. Edward. R. B. Lucas and L. J, John son. The report submitted follows: Your committee beg leave to report the following order ot business for this meeting: "Resolved, That this meeting forma joint stock company, to be called tbe - Railroad Company, with a capital stock of 1500,000. We further recommend that this meeting elect a committee of seven or more representa tive men on permanent organization and incorporation." The report being adopted, the follow- idg gentlemen were elected as member of tbe committee: S. B. Barker. Ed Dunn, Condon ; B. T. Snell, H. D. Ran dall, Olex j FredTobey, W. L. Barker, Arlington ; Jobn Shorb, Ralph Frotuan, Ferry Canyon ; A. Grelner, W. J. Ed ward, Mayville; G. Schilling, II. L. Propst, Matney ; A. B. Lamb, Will Hoo ver, Fossil; C. A. Danneman. W. R. Boyer, Clem ; R. M. Johnson, Lone Rock. Thia committee is called to meet at Con don on tomorrow (Friday) at 2 o'clock P. M. to frmulate a report, which will be submitted to a mass meeting to be held at 10 o'clock A. M. on the following day. After some further discussion an adjournment wa taken nntil Saturday, January 12, at 10 o'clock A. M. Tbe meeting was a notable one on ac count of the lively interest manifested oy every one present. The people are in earnest in thia matter and the con census -of opinion among all present teemed to be that the outlook is more than favorable for carrying the project to a successful termination. It is believed that the next meeting will be more largely attended than tbe laet one, and it I hoped by all who have the interest of grand old Gilliam at heart that those who doubted that a successful meeting could be held, and who etill doubt that a railroad can be built, will be a wide of the mark in one instance as In the other.
