THE COtiDOi! GLOBE THURSDAY Jut HITCHCOCK A, l ML -TWN. . 8-creiuy Hitchcock, of the inte rior department, is reported ) im? that tlierent bij irpuMieats majori y in Oregon may Iw taken a ar e ndorsement of his policy re j;a ding jmbli.' land. The Beere t ry is cither talking to make a wuine or else he is as ignorant as a Hottentot as regards the real stat us of his famous? land policy in the htimla of the people of this state. O egonians, most emphatically, d not endorse Ida policy and he has iso occasion to plume himself in pride as heing responsible for the result ot the recent election. Had he present administration been obliged to rest its case on Mr. Hitchcock's popularity in Oregon U could hate expected tocouie out vf the recent election looking like thirty cents. Undoubtedly it was the intention of the frainers of the original homestead law to make it possible for the rank and file to ac quire 160 acres of government land for their own use and benefit with out resorting to perjury or doing a lot of impossible things and also to safeguard the public domain, so far as possible, against the raids of grafters, speculators- and land sharks of every description. If, however, the policy now in vogue lias not resulted in reversing the original purpose of the law then it is useless to attempt to discover a cause by tracing back from an ef fect. Many Oregon voters are from Missouri and Mr. Hitchcock will have to "show them" several things before they will believe that they voted the republican ticket this year because of any special ad miration for his land policy. MICROBES. They've s'truck the bug that 6lays the bu that flays the bug that sticks us, they've jailed the germ that guides the germ' that taught the germ to fix us. A divorce case in Portland has brought out the novel fact that a Btate statute exists which provides that all divorce suits muet be given ten days advance notice to the dis trict attorney who is then supposed to represent the missing party. The law has been ignored for years. A case brought on these ground, and sustained, would invalidate many of the divorces granted in Oregon for the past fivejyears. in cluding alimony provisions and property distributions. Mitchell News. Billy Jones, a fair sized school boy of n ueighborng town, one day wrote on the blackboard: "Billy Jones can hog the girls better than any other boy- in sclmol." The young lady teacher, seeing it, call ed him up. "William did you write that?" "Yes ma'am," replied Billy. 'Well," said she sternly, "you stay i ti after school." The other children waited for Billy to come out so they could guy him. "Gt a lickiu' didn't ye?" nsked one. "Nope," replied Billy. "What then?" they asked.
