She is in charge of the veteran Jesse Johhson, one of the oldest boatmen in the West ern country, assisted in the cfSce by those affable and attentive clerks, Boyd, Moss aud Shaw. The reguUr United States Mail packet City of Hantivi'le, arrived last evening, and will leave on return trip this evening at 6 o'clock. We are indebted to ber sltentive clerk for rirer fa vors. She is in ch trge of that careful and atten tive offirer, Capt. Weaver, assisted in tbe office by our worthy young friend Litkrer. She will be here toteave on Monday next. Common Council Kegular Meeting-. Trcrsdat, Msy 28. Aid. Fojr?, from Finance committee, reported fa vorably on sundry accounts, which were ordered to be paid. He algo submitted the report of the Water Tax Collector, which was received. All. A. L. Davis, from Cemetery Committee, sab miued the report of the Sexton, for the month of April, showing 34 interments for that month; 27 whites, awl 7 blaiks 32 from the city, and 2 from the country. Aid. Fogg, from Special Committee, to whom was referred the petition of the Mechanics' Insti tute, for permission to build rooms over tbe pres ent Market House, 25 feet in height, between the north and south wings of the Market-house, report ed that the committee bad bal s conference with a committee on the prt of the Institute, and re commeuded that the proposition be accede i to, on certain conditions. The propsition is, to (rrsnt the Mechanic's Institute the privilege of erecting s building for thiir use, over the Market-house, and have the five use of the s ime for fifty years. The committee of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, recommend in favor of graining tbe privilege, pro vided the Mechanic's Institute commence the im provement by the 1st of May, 1S58, and finish it by the 1st of July, 1859, snd when the Institute may be ready to go to work, the Mayor is to ap point a committee, who, shall, in conjunction with a similar committee on the psrt of the Institute, draw up a wri't -n contract, specifying the terms and the privileges to be extended to each party. The report was concurred in. Aid. Fogg pres-nted s petition from the Superin tendent of the Public ricnools, asking for the erec tion of an additional school edifice between the Socth Nashville In-iitute and Broal street, for the better accommodation of the children iii that q iarter of the city. Powers, for the tnvilige of trtcting a frame building on Jt-flVrson street, on which a spirited debate took place, from which it was apparent that the City Council intend to di-coi.titiue granting the privi lege of erecti'ig any more frame buildings iu any part of the corporation. The petiiiou was finally granted. Aid. Jones presented a petition from the Keeper d the Work-house, asking for an increase of com pensation for balding thi prisoners at the Work House, iu consequence of the enhanced price of provisions. Referred to s committee consisting of Aid. Ware, Coleman, Glenn and Ilaile. All. Felts presented a petition from Peter Lowry, asking for the privilege of holding night meetings by his colored congregation. Tbs peti tion was rejecteii by a unanimous vote.
