Urn. they ere handed intberw. they wHl no t b tarried. Tran.ie.it Job Work must be paid for on del very. . OMr cl(r-!vew Bulldinc Projected, and in process I CoMimctlOB. It gives us pleasure to notice that there it in course of erection on tbe North-west corner of Cher ry and Line streets, Urge building for Messrs. Carter, Bowman & Co., to be fitted with machinery for grinding grain. We learn that this mill will be three stories bib, with front of 60 feet bj 78 in depth ; end bsve four run of stones, which will turn out 200 barrels of flour per day. The building up of suc enterprise! bespeaks a rapid growth to our city. It" posiiion is a conrerieot one for reced ing and trsofportirjg by both Bailroad atd Steam boat. It will cost f30,000. Adjoining F. Sloan's Manufactory, on N. Market etreet, and on the North-west corner of Gay and College streets, are being erected two handsome residences fcr merchants of tbis place. These buildings, together with other dwellings lately put up by Mr. M. Burns greatly improve tbis vicinity. In North Market street, Messrs Morris & Strst ton, wholesale Grocery men, are erecting for them- stlres a large and elegant wsre-bouse, that runs through from Market to Front streets, bsviDg on both streets ornamcDted fronts. This bouse will be four stories high, 46 feet front and 214 feet deerj. Both fronts will be turmounted - , by a cornice and pediment of iron, and bare iron window triinrnii.ea. We believe it will be the - 0 largest Grocery bouse in the city. The iron work la beitit? done at Franklin. Tennessee. It is from a design of Mr. A. Deiman, and will cost 30,000, On the Wut side of North Market and opposite to Clark etreet, Messrs. Burge & Allen, wholesale Grocers, are preparing to erect a large warehouse, three stories bipb for their business. It will be 72 feet froDt by 105 feet deep, and one of the largest warehouses in town. The cost will be about J 16, OJ0. Messrs. H. S. French k Son, Grocery and Pro duce dealers, are enlarging at an outlay of about f5,000 their spacious warehouse, fronting on Clark and Spring streets, so ss to get room for the de mands of Ircreasirg trade. No business we lesrn, Las irrproved more rapidly than the wholesale Gro cery and produce trade, and without making an in vidious comparison, we call attention to the busi ness houses of the Grocery men, and then to those of the Dry Goods trade. TLe latter are certainly building the most colly stores. But we are glad to notice a spirit of improvement smong our Gro cery merchants, that they are erecting better and finer bouses. Messrs. Dart & McCrae, and Mr. B. Lanier, bave commenced rebuilding on South Front street, at:d on the site of the fallen warehouse of the latter gentleman, two fine warehouses, which will be ad ditions to two handsome structures they purpose building this summer, in place of the houses they now occupy on South Market treet. Wbeo these houses are completed, each firm will have 33 front by 214 feet deep, and go three stories high on Mar ket street. The fronts will be executed in brick and iron, from a design by Mr. T. M. Brennan, Civ il Engineer, and will be surmounted by cornices and p?diments of Iron. Th y will cost f 35,000. In Broad and South side, between College and Cherry streets, Mr. Andrew Anderson has lately put up two handsome Btores, that add to the appear ance of that street In the Mine street and two doors East of Cherry, on the Noith side Mr. Robert Castleman is prepar ing the foundation on wbi .h to erect a three story brick building for the Grocery and Produce buei cet . It will have a handsome front of 26 feet, and run back 140 feet, end will cost about $10,000. Messrs. Beech, retail dry goods dealers, are erect ing in North College street, a builJing, that prom ises to eclipse its cosily and fair propoi firmed neigh bors on either side. It is 25 feel by 170, aod built Of br'.ck. The front will be stuccoed in imitation tf note, having quoins of the same in relief. 1 1 w i 1 1 go 'our stories, snd be surmounted by a cornice and ped uent of wood. Designed by Mr. II. M. Ake rojd. To cost $12,600. V learnthat some of its neighbors purpose adding other stories to their fronts, which with the above, will make an impos ing facade. Rev. A. L. P. Green has lately had reared on the South-east corner of College and Union streets, two white marble fronts two stories high, to be occu pied, we learn, by banking institutions, the one on corner by the Planter's Bank, and the other by the Bank of Commerce. In the rear of the above, and on Union street, two brick buildings with stuccoed fronts three stories high are being completed for the same gentlemen, to be occupied as retail dry goods stores. Workmen are busilv engaged fitting the bouse on the south-east corner of Cherry and Spring streets for the Port Office, which will be removed there sometime next mouth. Oa the north -west corner of the above streets we hear it is the intention of Mr. John Overton Of this vicinity, to erect a block of stores five stories high, with palatial facades on Cherry and Spring streets. These stores together with the Govern ment buildings on the south-west and opposite cor ner, and the new Masonic 11 all ytt to be erected on Spring street near by, will add greatly to the architectural beauty of our town. To cost about 176,000. We notice a fine private residence going up on Lot No. IS, North High street, for one of our en terprising mercbauU. It is from a design by 11 M. Akeroyd, and will con $15,000. On the present site of the Cumberland Tresby- tvrien church, in Summer street, it is in content plation, we are iuformeJ, to erect for the accomo dation of this congregation, a Urge and more com modious structure than that they now occupy. On the tame street, ai.d near the above church, we notice an elegant dwelliug going up. In lligh street, south cf Broad, a baodson.a dwelling is in course of erection, which will add much to the belt, r appearance of that locality. There is being erected on the north-east corner of Broad aod McLemore streets a splendid resi dence, from 4 dealga of Mr. II. M. AkeroyJ, to cost $20,000. Oc Demumbrane at the south end of Yauxha.il street we titties an elegant and commodious d Wei ll g goi'ig up, deaigoed by Mr. Akeroyd, and to cost $16,000. Ou Summer street, second door south of Cedar, kit been lately eroded a handsome reei lence, the f ont of which when completed, will, we learn, i. TO .ike an lOJDoeioz arpraraucc. uriuit relieved ui ' wooden aud iron trimmings in tasteful designs. Estimated cost $7,000. The Nashville Female Academy, that oil snd well established institution, now in its forty-filth jear, has lately had added to it formerly large dimensions, a capacious hll and chapel 60 feet by 73, and three stories high. The cost of tbis improvement is we learn $25,000. Anything that incrraaes or improves the water privileges of our city we gladly meotioo. we understand that the city corporation are aoout lay ing down a large and main pips from the reeerroirs to unite with the preseut water pipes, that shall furnish a greater supply to the city than formerly, and carry water to a por.bn of the town not served before. Toe coal of doing lliis work will L $0,000. A (lumber of dwelliug house are being con structed in West Nashville, that improve that por tion of our town greatly. We be .r that the Campbvllite congregation who were deprived by the burning of tbeir church oo Cherry street, of a place of worship, purpose erecting on Tins street, between Spring and Broad, nniqua snd bstdiorae church ed.Sce in the oc Ugosat at) 1(3. When tastefully ornamented and froponionS, Looses built la this style fit v pleasing effect. One of the finest churches in Washington city Is In this style. A petition was presented to the city council at its last meeting asking to bave built, another public school house, somewhere south of Brosd street, to supply school facilities to those living between the Hume and South Nashville buildings. Our citizen cau point with pleasurable emotions to the different public schools of the towu, and truly say, these are our monuments. The free school system here, has been thus far eminently successful. With misgivings and doubts, ojr citizens entered upon the free plan of education, but deferring to the judgment of those who had studied it, and fore most among them the lamented Alfred Hume, were persuaded to build the Hume High School, a noble rronument to that beloved and good man. Our public schools will remnin to the coming gen erations when we have ptfeed awsy, aod shall raise up men to protect and cheiiih our free and happy Government Then all we can do to per fect the work we have so laudably begun, shall in future write our name smong the benefactors of men. We hope the city council will build the petitioners a larger and fiuer building than either of the others. We understand that there ia a proposition being sgitated, to petition the next Legislature to make sn sppropriation for erecting a Governor's resi dence. This is a good move. To our shame be it said : but up to the present hour, the Governor of Tennessee Las had no place he could call home in the Capital A ctmpany, we learn, having bought from the Nashville manufacturing company, lately burned out, the unexpired lease upon their premises, have set to work to erect new shops for a general foun dtry and iron manufacturing business. It gives us pleasure to notice the enterprise of the movers in this matter, snd we shall rejoice to chronicle the prosperity of their undertaking. We wish our city had more men of such mettle in it. We have not cotfined ourselves to Dotlcing alone the new buildings going up, for as we go along, en terprises of importance to our growth deserve no lice and encouragement. Another new feature in the manufactories of Nashville, msy be fcuud on South College street, just below Broad, in a small new framed building. If we go in, we shall ee in the different stages of completion, barrels made entirely by machinery. Many of our wealthy citi xens do not know of the existence of some of our manufactories. Il th y did we think they would help build them up, and so our city. The friends of the project for connecting tbis city with Edgefield by a suspension bridge, oppo-ite Spring street, we hear are egiin agitating the sub ject. We learn it will most probably be built the next summer, at a cost of near $100,000. Work on the Louia'ille and Nashville Railroad bridge is propressing finely. The two piers on the opposite banks of the river are already completed, and the other three wbichare being built in the water, will be ready by next November for the superstructure. We sre told that ten miles of track for both the L. & N. and the Edgefield and Kentucky roads will be laid by the 1st of Januarv next. We shall rejoice to see even this much done towards the completion of these great thorough fares ; for we believe the completion of these roads i!l be the great "opening day" for Nashville. These roads muxt make us ; for they will let us out into the living working world, and it into our beau tiful, fruitful country. By the way, may we not afck if the Railroad Companies bave abaudoued their project for uniting all the roads in one common Depot? For the sake of progress, and t! e beauty of system, we hope Lot. We shall be glad to see the L. &. N. Rosd urged forward at greater speed. With its present management we find no fault, we are only anxious to see it going forward more rap idly. The bridge will cost $200,000. We regret to say it, but there will probably not be a new Hotel in Nashville, as is generally sup posed, until after the completion of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Interested citixens, and stran gers visiting us either for business or pleasure, need no lonper anathematize our otherwise attractive city. It will do to good. The crowded rooms of our ill-constructed, incommodious, and uncomforta ble Hotels, reach neither the feelings nor purses of our money men; but, unfortunately for Nashville, the demands of dependent tradesmen, and the real-estate mania so rife of late years, ravishes our affectlo:is. We bave two much selfishness, and not the city's prosperity at heart. Men who visit Nash ville, and especially mechanics, those who depend on their daily labor for a support, and wish a home aud education for their children, and desire either to build or rent a bouse, cannot do so. Because our money is yielding a larger return upon the Bills and Notes of needy men, than if invested in build ing houses. In the meantime, we modestly sug gest to our wholesale merchant, they being evi dently the only citizens disposed to invest much in building, to come together for their own business sake, and erects grand Mkrch awts' Hotel, one that shall contain accommodations fur at least five hundred persons ; snd combine in its equipment all the conveniences of a firsl-class Hotel. In a year from the time such a house is established here, Nashville will begin to get a name for hospitality commensurate with her well known beauty. Stran gers and business men visi ing us, continually ask, why Nashville can't afford better Hotels? We are a long way behind many younger and smaller pla ces, and of less boasted refinement, in the Hotel business, snd there is no pood reason for it. The travelling public have witnessed the farce played by the Nxw Hotel agitators until they are surfeit ed. They are now anxious to greet the solid act of building. The variety of buiUings beings constructed In Nashville, has impressed us to enquire why the materixU used are not more various. In Tennessee there is any quantity and quality of building stone, suited by the Almighty to our climate. There are marbles, white, gray, brown, red, black and greer, that may be had quite as easily as those of Vermont or Italy, and of beauty far surpassing any yet im ported. It has puzzled us no little to imagine why oar builders do not prefer our indigenous rocks to those of foreign origin. Wl at if they do cost a little more at first? Tbry will become as cheap, and cheaper than any other if sought after. We bave been often asked why iron for building, is iinpoited to this place, when Tennessee iron is noted lor its superior quality for all purposes. We know that if builders would take the trouble to have their iron work done by careful hands at home, they would getitss well done as any where abroad. Ttie iron woik done by our own founders, and now to be seen on our street, if not suptrior in smooth ness of fioifb, is far suptrior in strength aud de sign. We have not in our remarks on the buildings in the city, discussed at sit styles of architecture; because, we are free ts say, and regretfully, that for the most part, (he architectural display in the streets of our modern cities, is made up from all the acknowledged styles of architecture; and which tuiLt be termed iu I'bytiology, MongrtLc, or in Ltw, Bastardian. If the present undertakings, and growth of Nash ville indicate her future, we think we may hope to sre her become a Urge and prosperous city. Geo graphical position has already bade our State the educational center of the Southwest, aod if ber citiseus will but direct tbeir energies and enter prise to developing the agricultural and mineral resources widespread within her borders, she and her beautiful capitol will then take lbs poaitioodue them. lli2 educational advantages that few of her a Ur southern cities et joy, why should not Naab- vu'le, by the authority ot her superior intelligence, erect an anhiiectural Lame, that could demand lbs respect, if not the admiration of the learned? Evi dences of the superior Intelligence of our citizen sre not wanting, we can pouitwiih cotbaaiaaucpWe sure to our magnificent Slate Capitol, to the pro. poed union Railroad Depot, whereby an extensive country seekiug its outlet through this city, can come and go unrestrained; aud to our public Schools, mouumetits of ths intelligence aod for. siht of our citizen. These evidences challenge ths admiration of great titua, scd place cur fits h;gb, la ths world of science and art. This pot ition we should strive to maintain. That we are advancing in the art of building, we refer to the many fine structures al ready mentioned; snd foremost smong them the State CapitoL When men in coming years, shall look upon this grand Temple, it will be with deep satisfaction; snd the master architect, whose hon ored body, sleeps by order of the State Legislature, entombed in its massive walls, will not be forgot t ;n. The time will come, when architects enthusi astic in their profession, will make pilgrimages, to get views of, snd measurements from the Capitol of Tennessee, built by William Strickland. OLIVER, J.C. D. PARKET, LEVI P. HOMES, OTTO DREPEf.. GEO. MINOT, WM. REED, GEO. M. WARREN, Jcnoss. The following Instruments were offered for examination, in competition for awards : Forty-eight Piano Fortes, subdivided as follows: Nineteen Grands, Three Semi Orands, Two Parlor Grands, Thirty-thru Squares. In the department of Piano Fortes, the committee, nniting into one class, aj ia obvlouily correct, the Grands, Semi. Grands and Parlor Grands, recomnaend the following awards : Cbickerinc A Sons, for their Grands, Eeml- Grands, and Parlor-Grand, for most decided and meritorious Improvements, a Geld Med iL Chickering A Sons, for the two b?gt Fquire Piano Fortes, of Seven Octavo each, the first Silver MedaL The committee, in comingto a decision upon tbe merits of the several instruments of which they have Jast determined their award, ware ol entire unanimity. They did not hesitate for a moment in deciding that tbe Grand Piano Fortes from the justly celebrated houieof the Messrs. Chickering A Bona, were not only altogether manifestly superior to all com petitors at th present Exhibition, but were an equally manifest, and greatly advanced improvement over the well commended produc i n of the same establishment offered at anterior F xbitions. And the committee not only feel It to be a pleasure, but an obvious duty, to congratulate the present beads of this long established house, that they hav so well sustained itshigh repute. Tbe memory of the good name, and of the good deeds, and of the great skill of ita foundi-r, shall long be eheri hed; and it is a matter of equal satisfaction and priue that th garment of praise ha has so fairly won aud wore, has fallen upon shoulders worth, to receive and able to honor it. The Semi-Orands of Chickering A Sons, and a Parlor-Grand by th same firm, wer superb instrument'; and this last had tbe stvtral varieties of Grands, Semi-Grands, and Parlor-Grands been kept distinct in class, would have been enti tled, a niftiest award, both for its own in rinsic merit, and a a new and meritorious invention. But all these were uni ted into one class, and the award was made accordingly. The Parlor-Grand, first e-naoated from the house of Chlcker ing Arons, and made its appearance at the exhibition of 18'8, and the committee of that year awardeA to It a Gold Medal; but inasmuch aa tb late lamented head ol the firm waa a member of tbe then Government of 'he focieiy , the award could not be cooflr.ued consis'ently with the laws of the Association, it wou.d afford th committee great satis faction could thia award be now confirmed. That the Judgirent of the committee may be distinctly understood, they now repett their awards on tb class of in strument under discussion. They put the several varieties Into one class, and they award to Chickering A Sons th first ptemium, to eover the three varieties offered by them Gold Mioal. Iu the class of Square Piano Fortes, the awards of the committee were mule with equal unanimity. The instruments of Chickering A Sons are at tbe head. it is not necessary to ditcuss the merits of tbe other Square Piano Fortes In detail. Those to which awards have been assigned are placed in the order of tbeir merit , as adi udged by th e committee, and those of which special mention is not made are patsed by aa not coming cp to a just standard of excellence. Twenty-Eighth Annual Fair of the American Institute, New York, 1856. H.A. WOLLENHATJPT.W.H. SAGE, JAMES HARRISON, L. M. GOTTSCHALK, JrJDoaS. Cbicisxiso A Soss, Boaton, Mass.
