CATTLE MAN G0E5 TO NEWY0RK CITY SAM N. WARREN, OF SPRING HILL ATTENDS MEETING OF DIRECTORS. Sam N. Warren, of Spring Hill, left Saturday night for New York City, where he will attend a meeting of the directors of the American Cattle Company, of which he Is a member. Mr. Warren will represent not only Tennesseee at the meeting, but sev eral other States as well. He is one of the most prominent cattle men in the State. News was received here Thursday announcing the death of W. B. Sow ell, which occurred at Union City last Thursday. He was born and reared in this county, going to Obion after the war where he married and reared a small family. He leaves a wife and one son. He is a brother of Jim Sow ell, of this county, who lives on Bear Creek. Mr. So well was about 68 years of age and was a gallant Confed erate soldier and was captain of the company of old Confederates at Union City at the time of hit death. Baskett Is Chairman Is to Look Into the Matter Mrs. Kelley to Have General Charged Plans are going forward rapidlz fo: the establishment .in the smaller cit ies and towns of the State of free li braries. A commission has been ap pointed composed of a set of niei and women who are recognized over the State as prominent educators, and who are admitted to be the best Id the State. The work will be active ly in charge of Mrs. Pearl Kelley, who is general secretary and organizer. Mrs. Kelley is most enthuslsastic in regard to the work. In a state ment given out today she said that the free library commission met a long felt want in the State, and she believ that it would be one of the most suc cessful undertakings in the kind start ed in many years. Mrs. Kelley, the general secretary of the commission, will devote a great deal of her time to visiting the towns over the State where invita tions have been extended her, and will take up actively the work of lo cating libraries there. Many invita tions have already ben sent to her for the visit. The commission which will have the work in charge is made up of the following: O. H. Baskett, chainman; Miss Mary Hannah Johnson, secretary; Mrs. W. D. Beard, Memphis, treasurer; Miss Mary Skeffington, State librarian, ex officio; Prof. J. W. Case in the Federal Court at Nash ville Results in Vindication of Co lumbia Resident Represented by Hon. James C, Voorhies. Special to The Herald. NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 28. In the federal court here today the jury in the slander case of Robert M. Wil liams, of Maury county, against W J. Massey, of Macon, Ga., returned a ver dict for the plaintiff for $16,250. The defendant is a wealthy resident of Macon, Ga., and was formerly associ ated with the plaintiff in the manage ment of Idle Hour Stock Farm at that place. The suit grew out of alleged slan derous statements made by the de fendant in Columbia about two years ago which were said to reflect upon the plaintiff. Suit was brought in the State courts for slander but the case was transferred to the federal court with the. above result Mr. Williams was represented by Hon. James C. Voorhies, of Columbia, and Harry Stokes and John A. Pitts, of Nashville.' It is understood that the defendant will move for a new trial and if that is denied will appeal.
