In East Saginaw. : $200,000.00 TO BE EXPENDED x THE PRESENT YEAR . v UNPARALLELED GROWTH Ob" THE "LITTLE GIA A T" CITY OF, THE WEST. :-. t . , , TV hare before stated tbtt preptri . tions wero being mado for an unusual ' amount of building in tbis city during j ' the) present year but our anticipations .. fell far abort of what the results will be. We give a list of tbe moat important structures many of which are already ' under contract and ujon some, such " work as can bo done at this season is already progressing finely. Our streets which are never quiet, will, when the season is a little farther advanced, be musical w ith the sound of "axe, hammer and gavel" to a degree which w ill aston k ish even the most visionary of the prophets of the Valley: The first and most important work in contemplation and partial progress is a Swing Bridge which is to lo erected across the Saginaw River from the foot of Genesee street in this city. This bridge, which is lo be built by the Saginaw Kiver llridge Ccmpany recently organized, and to whom au thority was given by the Board of Su pervisors who also fixed the rates of toll, at their special session in Fvbru nry last will bo, including piers at each leading, 700 feet in length, built in the most substantial manner with swing of 210 feet span in the channel, leaving a space of SO feet each 6ide of centre pier for the passago of vessel and steamers. The surface of the bridge will be divi ded into a carriage way 19 feet in width and two foot walkach 5 feet wide. Aside from the end piers it will be built entirely of trestle work and the piers be ing a long distanco apart will offer no material obstruction to the passage of rafts or scows. The estimated cost is $25,000. BRICK BLOCKS. Crouse & Little havo made an ar rangements to erect a first class brick hotel, COxl 10, three stories high, with all modern improvements, appointments and conveniences, on the corner of Gene sea and Casa streets, Estimatod cost, $15,000. , W. L. T. Little will build on Water atreet, just north of Exchango Block, a three story brick block. C0s90 with one atoro below, the balance to bo used aa a second class hotel, estimated cost, $9,000. Mr. Little alio intends to erect a handsome cottage on the comer ct Wsshingtou &. , Fitr.hugh stroets, at a cost of $1,5C0. - ' ' Burt & Co , are preparing to com mence at once the erection of, a dock 120x50 and brick Warehouse 100x60 on the site of the old Jefferi block, Water street. Two small atores will be partitioned off in the building, the bal ance to be occupied by Gooding & Coi, Forwarders, cost $G,000. II. Mar la will build a three story brick block, 20x60 on the site of the tenement now occupied by him, on Genesee street, opposite the Bancroft House, the lower story to be occupied as a store, upper portion for a dwelling. Estimated cost $5,000. .t . ,": ' M. B. Hess has drafts, plans and specifications complete and will com tnenco immediately the erection of a brick block 45x70, three stories high, oa Washington Street designed to be added to hereafter on the same pian ino lower story to be divided into two atores, the upper part to be occupied for offices and other purposes. The front of this block is of very hsndsotne do sign having pannelson corner and centre projectious, and about wiudowa, and cornice of Milwaukee brick, curved iron Window caps, and front of lower story entirely of iron, neat light and or nate, estimated cost, $3,500. ; Jesse Hoyt baa made arrangements to build a four story brick block 50x85 between tbe Bancroft House and Buena Vista Block, tbe first floor to be divided nto four stores; second and third atories f to be cat into rooms for the Bancroft House, the fourth to be finished entire for public ball, 43x83, 25 feet in the dear, arranged so as to open into the Bancroft House and from below by an easy flight ofstaiw, cost $20,000. Also three story brick block on Water street, North of Exchange Block to be divided into two atores, each occupying the three s toriee entire, cost $0,000. r AW from six to twelve cottages- on his tract near the Railway, at a cost of $1,000 each. j ' Boos, Borrell Co., lwill build a brick Livery Stable, COx I '20, two. atones high, on the corner of Washington and Tuscola streets, w ith room for 75 horses, carriage room -50x60 without' pillar or obstruction, and fitted with all modern fixtures and appurtenances requisite in carrying on an extensive livery business, cost, (0,000. Dr. J. S. Curtis is preparing to build a brick atoro on Water street on the site of bis present wooden tenement, 30x110, three stories, Vst $5000. Mr. Mann recent purchaser of the, Geneseo House property, corner of Geuceee. and Cass streets proposes in conjunction with John Luidlin, who owns twenty feet adjoining, to build a three story brick block of thrco stores, at an estimated cost of $12,000. ... William Lloyd has plans perfected for building a three-story brick block on Washington street, next door North of Brick Market, the lower part to be divided into two stores, upper rooms for offices, &c. He also intends to raise the market building one story. Whole exjcnse for both buildings estimated at $0,0(0. " - W'OODKJC BUILDINGS. In the list of brick blocks we have incidentally mentioned several wooden buildings; in addition to these we make up the following list which is necessarily imperfect for tbe reason that is impossi ble to keep track of the smaller tene ments in progress: Brown & Mumford are building on Eranklin atreet, a few steps north of Genesee a two story framo building 60x60, the first floor to bedivided into three stores, upper looms for offices and general purposes, cost $3,000. L. B. Hovey is putting up a building of the same sizo on the opposite side of the street, to be divided into three de partments, for carriage-making, trim rning, and harness shop, cost $2,000. Mrs. 11. M. Ellis of Jersey City pro- posus to erect on Hoyt street, about midwsy between the Academy and the plank road, four cottage residences at a cost of $900 each. Mr. J. A. Perry will build a private residence on Jefferson street this season at a cost of $2,000. The Eat Saginaw Salt Manufacturing Company will build six 6mall dwellings upon their grounds and a salt ware- bouse 60x150, cost, $3,000. The figures above given, as to cost, foot up at $148,000; taking into ac count the many dwellings now in a par tial state of completion, the salt block, structures for mechanical purposes, sto rage, etc., and smaller tenoments, which we have not attempted to enumerate, the gross amount will exceed $200,000; a figure which for a city of less than six thousand inhabitants, and only a twelve-year-old at that, may well aston ish not only the oldest settlers, but tbe most Sanguine and visionary, even, of the late comers; and all outsiders, whatever ideas they may have of this progressive locality. One fact to be taken into consideration is, mat these improvements are ail tne fruit of private enterprise. No public buildings are oa the list, no grand re sults of associated .capital; these will follow in proper time, and when tbe spirit of progress and enterprise thus individually manifested is consolidated and combin ed with that design, we ahall witness the erection of edifices of a more public character which will be an honor to the city and fitting monuments of the general good taste and unstinted liberality of our people. Sauna. A few weeks since we no ticed tho rapid growth of thia enter prising villago , Nearly all the lands in its immediate vicinity have been platted into lots, which ere telling with a rapid ity astonishing to tho ancient habitant. Hon. E. Thatcher ; baa just completed the platting of his fine tract, which lies on a continuation of Jefferson street of this city and tho old Saginaw Plank Road, into 300 lots, with convenient streets and alleys, which plat he puts upon record as "Thatcher's Addition to the Village of Saliua." He has already disposed of quite a number of the lots, and implications ' for others are fast coming in. Thero is no questioning the fact that Salina bid fair aoon to rival even her most promising neighbors. Real Estati in Detroit. The ex traordinary inflation of currency, and other causes, have bad the effect to stimulate operations in real estate in the city of Detroit to an extent scarcely looked for in that staid, old fashioned town. The Frot rrest foots up the Uansactions for one week at $139,950. ; JCSTNavjoatiow between here and Hay City has not been resumed ainoe its closing oa Tuesday last, ar.d tbe weather at present gives but (isiat prom lo -for the' immediate raising of the ice blockade, Democratic JaeUrial Convention. RfiohrJ, That in offering to the electors of thia Judicial District the name of tho Hon. Jabez O. Sutherland ns a candidate for the office of Circuit Judge, wo do so with the utmost con fidenco that they will recognize in him a man eminently fit for that position, peculiarly qualified therefor by a long and extensive practice in the legal pro fospion, and that in his systematic and untiring industry tho people have the surest guarantv that the duties of the Court will bo discharged with prompt ness, and in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the Judiciary of this btate Resolved. That wo tender to tho peo pic of this District no other issue than tho superior fitness of our candidate, and loyalty to the Constitution and Government of our country. Rail Road from Flint to Fenton ville. We have assurances in which we place the utmost confidence, that tbe rsilway connection between Flint and Fentonville, or some other station on the Detroit &. Milwaukee Railway, will be completed early next Fall. There is no route in the West, at pres ent unoccupied by a railroad, as favora ble for the enterprise as this; and the facility with which capital may be ob tained renders tho undertaking a mere pastime compared with the difficulties And discouragements encountered by those w ho have labored so energetically in pushing the F. & F. M. Road to its present extent. TELXORArif. A line of telegraph connecting with the Union Line East and Weitt, is to be completed to this city as soon as the ground is in proper condition for the erection of poles, giv ing us lightning communication with tho outside world and "tbe rest of man kind." lex. Scther land for the office of Circuit Judge for the 10th Judicial Circuit, says : "With Mr. Sutherland's fitness and Salifications for tho office wo bave no ault to find." 37 Some of the later communica tions of tho Reporter for the "Cleveland Delegation" to tho Leader are "big." We shalll give a few savory extract! therefrom next week. Bi.tLDiNO. In addition to the build ings enumerated in another article, we earn that Mr. Rcdfield, an Eastern mtn, who owns some lots near the rail road, has authorized parties here to contract for the building of four cotta ges thereon, at A cost of from $800 to $1,000 each. Arrangements are also nearly petfected for the erectiou of an Epircopal Church, the estimated cost of which is $5,000. Parsons & Bro., of Saginaw City, also intend to build a dwelling house, corner of Washington and Emerson streeta; cost $1,500. Mr. Seward in one of his dispatches to Mr- Adams sai : ".Lxtreine aivo- 'cates of African slavery and its most 'vehement opponents seem to be acting 'together to precipitate a servile war, 'the latter by demanding an idea of 'universal emancipation. As this was a home thrust at the proclamation, it convicted the Presi dent of inconsistency, and it became necessary for him to deny any knowl edge of sucu a dispatch, which he did. Not only this, but the late answer of the Secretary of State to the French offer of meditation was said to have been for warded by Mr. Seward without its pre vious submission to the President, who is reported to have assurea the ireneh Minister at W ashington to that vuect, and also that he disa proved of the reply. Tho tempest raised around the ears of the Premier bv tbe radical press be cause of his alleged officiousness nettled him bo far that he has raised an issue of veracilv between the President and him self. In a cote to the Aew York Tims he avers: "Every dispafxh that was 'not merely and tnulmically formal that 'I have sent abroad has been fully sub 'milled in words and substance to the 'President and read by him or to him, 'before it was sent. Aa the greater part of all that Mr. Seward has ever written is susceptible of at least two coUBlructiotis, he ran no risk in submitting Ins dispatches to the President The responaibility of the latter was merely "technical and formal,' as it is not charged that he understood tbe d;spatahes. lie ought not however to have denied having seen them. The pig actually qevoiired one of the childa cheeks, and lacerated ita head and body ao that it can hardly recover. . The Railroad Land Grakts. Th peuial correspondent of tbe Detroit Fret Press writing from Lansing under date of March 4, ssya: The comtnittou of the whole, on mo tion of Mr. Howell, has been discharged form further consideration of tho bill relative to the forfeiture of land grants of certain railroad companies, and the bill has been recommitted to the select committee. There has evidently been a backing down on the part of the Ty coon (Howell.) ar.d others, ana there is little doubt but that, an extention of timo will be granted these companies. So the big fight over this bone of con teutioo will probably be indefinately posponed. The Confederate Court in the South Carolina district has decided that a con script who has purchased a substitute does not become liable because tho nub stitute is drawn on the second draft. It ordered the discharge of a man who was obtained under such circumstanses. General Rosecrans has issued an order forbidding any more passes to citizens to visit Murfrecsboro, to see the wounded, or obtain dead bodies.
