TUB NEW RIVER STEAMER. The new steamer being built by Messrs. Kikbt & Tripp, at their thip ytini in this city, is now so well ad vanced, that the beauty of her model, the symmetry of her proportions, and the ease and grace of delicately curvod lines are beginning to attract the attention of vessel fanciers, as well as all poople of good taste who happen in that vi cinity. We think wo hazard nothing in malting the prediction that when fully complete eho Mill be as neat, as elegant and as lively a craft as floats tho "Western waters. Jler dimensions aro Length, over all 180 feet Heam 21 " G in Depth of Hold 8 " Guards amidships.-.... 10 u Malting broadth of boam over all, 4i foot 6 inches. She has a slightly hollow water line forward and aft ; round stern, 4 inches 'dead riso from keel to bilge, has 14 feet of dead wood in stem and ttern, is supported by two substantial trusses below decks running nearly her entire length, and will be stayed additionally by iron rods running "from kool posts near each end, theso will be stopped 43 foet from 6tem and etcrn, and the rods, ihree in number froin each, Will be fastened in dead ttooda, one forward, one aft, and four amidships, thus all the requisite strength is given for lake as well as river navigation should she ever bo required for that purposo ; and hflr frames, stays, braces and fastenings throughout are tho same as those of first class lake craft. Her moasuro mcnt, old custora-houso method, is 311 tons. Her propolling power consists of tho powerful low pressure engine which has driven the bteamer Ruby so well and so rapidly for many a year, to which steam will bo supplied by the same boiler though greatly im proved. Tho cylinder, which is al ready in placo, is 38 J inch bore, 8 feet stroke. Diameter of wheel, -1 feet, 7 foot faco with three flangos, and double iron rimmed; buckets "20 inches broad. Her arrangement and finish above the main deck will bo much like that of tho steamer lleindcert affording ev ery facility for comfort and enjoy ment. On the promenade deck will bo locatod tho saloon, 18x20 feet in ex tent, as is also tho officers' rooms. Tho new craft being considerably lar ger than thomIlei)uher, her enpacity for carrying passengers may safely bo put down at 7o0. Sho will bo launched during tho winter, and will bo ready for businoss at tho earliest opening of navigation. Designers and builders, Oapts. A. Kiuur and Tkipp, Engineer, who is superintending the putting up of the machinery, Mux. 1'aksiiall. "X. M. A. Tho Young Men's Association of this city has, after considerable una voidable delay, got well to work, pro vided an excellent courso of lectures fur tho ensuing winter and is ready, through tho Corresponding Secretary, to recoivo applications for membership. Tho course will consist of eight lec tures, by some of tho ablest literary and scientific men in the country. These articles of association wore adopted in August last, but owing to tho numerous delays incident to the organization of such an association, tho corporation have heretofore been unable to present them to the public. An invitation is extended to all who aro desirous of becoming members of the Association, to present their names .to tho Corresponding Secretary, at as early a day as practicable. For Ms Courier The subject of a Plank lload from East Saginaw, east to the county of Tuscola is being canvassed by the citizens of East Saginaw and others along the line of the projected routes. The fact is generally conceded, a plank road should be bililt at once on some one of the proposed linos. The ques tion to bo settled is, on which of the lines shall the road be built, as it is not feasible to build but one road at present. The German Colony, or Frankentrost road appears to be the lino- upon which the poople are concentrating. This route will pro bably command more capital then either of the other two lines in con templation. It is supposed this route will unite the citizens of East Saginaw, Saginaw City and Saliua in the con struction of a plank road on this line, as tho western terminous is at tho Br is tol street bridge. When the question is fully understood, this line will con oentrate the united energios of our citizens, from the fact it will accom modate tho several interests ot our city, as all parts of the city are accessi bio from this line of road. It is pro posed to construct the road on this line to the intersection of the Yassar and Bay City State road, at tho south west corner of Section 29, Town 12, North of Range 7 oast, from this point on tho State road to the village of Yassar. Four important State roads center at this village, viz : The Tort Huron State Road, the Ooodrichville Stato Road, the Forestville Stat Road and the State Road leading north to Saginaw Bay ; all o theso roads lead into a good farming country. From East Saginaw to Yassar by this route is about eighteen miles. The citizens of Yassar propose to build five miles of the road, which will leave thirtoen miles to bo built by other parties. On the 2Cth inst., at a meeting held in the Frankentrost settlement, five thou sand and eight hundred dollars were subscribed by forty persons, for the construction of this road. In this connection I would say it is important a plank road should be built west on the Stato road to St. Louis, which would be a continuation of the line of tho East Saginaw and Yassar road. It is not necessary to state, that with this road built, the largo trade of Qratiot and Isabella counties would be secured to us in stead of its going to St. Johns, on the 1). & M. Railway. There is still an other road in which the interests of the three places are identical, com mencing on tho north and south quar ter lij) of section 25, in town 12, north, range 4 east, running thence west to tho west line of section 29, thence southwest to tho Yillnge of Chcsaning, this road would open the southern tier of towns of this county to their natural place of business. O. DRAMATIC. Myers Dramatic Company open at Irving Hall in this city on Wednes day evening, next, with Jtichelieu, for a short season. In tho line of Stars they bring McIveax Bcciianajc and Miss Virginia Buchanan well known to those posted in theatricals as out and out "big'uns" on tho boards, and the stock is represented as in all re spects first class. The following extracts from a Tole do paper attest the cordiality with which the company is received else where. Mr. Buchanan has no superior upon the stage, and his splendid rendition of the part (the Merchant of Venice,) was only equaled by his Richelieu of Monday evening. lie is by nature gifted with every requisite for patsion acting. Possessed of a fine figure, a splendid voice, and a faultless elocu tion, besides possessing all the vigor of youth, places him so promptly be fore the lovers of art, that they looso sight of the man and see only the character which he represents. . Mr. Myers gives the people just what he advertises ; a First Class En tertainment The pieces aro carefully Suton the stage and judiciously ren ered. The Buchanans famo as stars is as bright as any in America, and the company compares favorably with any Metropolitan Theatre we have visited lately. A Slouch. Tho people of this city seem generally to favor the plan of keeping tho sidewalks as cloar as pos sible, each proprietor or occupant on the street attending to keeping the walk in front of his premises in pass able condition. Where this is not done the delinquent is by common con set voted a slouch ; and so ho is, of the mosJ slouchiest stripe. A slouch's most pertinent advertisement is a slouchy sidewalk, ad it is so taken and accepted among pedestrians and decent people. New Tco. Messrs. Rankin, Fratt Lapham & Co., are building a right sharp propeller tug at the ship yard of Messrs, Kirby & Tnpp in this city, of the following dimensions : Length 80 feet Beam ;.15 " G in. Hold 8 " High pressure engine, cylinder 18x 20 inchos. Easy model, will bo put up in fust class shape and will run for certain. To be out on tho first open ing of navigation. Tub Ornrivo Lecture of Prof. Ur son before the Young Men's Associa tion of this city, was, notwithstanding tho shortness of tho notice, attended by & lafge and Intelligent audience. The lecture was, as are all the produc tions of that thorough scholar and gentleman, a finished literary effort, and one which gave entire satisfaction. It is certainly worthy a more extended and critical notice, and such a notice was promised us, we supposed in good faith ; as it is not forthcoming, we tender this brief paragraph as an ap ology for having been stupid enough to hang on that certain, or rather un certain, stylo of favors mentioned, "in a book." Stages to Bat Citt. A. AY. Gates & Co., have permanently established, and will continue during the suspen sion of navigation; without regard to condition of roads, a line of first class four-horso coaches between here and Bay City, making three trips a day each way. Stages leave here at 7 and 11 A. M., and 1:30 P. M. Leave Bay City at 9 A. M., and at 1:30 and 0 P. M. Another New Steam eb. We have the best of reasons for stating that another new steamer of about the same dimensions as the one now build ing for the Jiuly't engine, will be put at the Ship Yard ef Kirbx & Tsir, in this city, between this time and the opening of navigation. Choice Otstebs. Hough "leads the column" in the oyster business, and continues to - 6upply all demands promptly and satisfactorily. No bet ter oysters were ever sold in this mar ket than those of the brand he recom mends, and no better are required in any market. Wilkin makes a grand show of clothing about theso days, being evidently determined that the Pioneer establishment shall not be behind in stylo, demonstrativonoss or merits. New Years Gifts. Doughty has a very fine assortment of Books, Annu als, Jewelry, Silver and Plated Ware, Fancy Goods, etc., appropriate for New Years Gifts. "Youno Ladies' Class."
