In all other respects these coins are exactly the same as those minted for the papacy of Pius XI. The minting of the Vati can currency is regulated by a spe cial financial convention with Italy, concluded in August, 1930, and rati fied the following January. The Vat ican coins are of the same value, material and dimensions as the Ital ian coins, the only difference being in the minting. Soldiers' Pension System The soldiers’ pension system is a development of comparatively re cent times, although the personal pension—an award made on a spe cial basis—was known even in the time of the Roman empire and waa chiefly in the form of grants for military service. The number of such pensions was so large that Sul ly in the Sixteenth century included their reduction as a part of his plan for economy. The Plymouth Pil grims had a regulation in 1636 pro viding for a pension for maimed soldiers. Chinese Reading Taboos Chinese consider reading in the bath unpardonable because “the written language, having been in vented by a saint, Chong Chieh, is sacred, and because it is composed after the style of the great sage, Confucius,’’ says a Chinese colum nist. Reading in bed, he adds, ia also considered improper, though it is not quite so serious an offense as reading in the bath. Court Sets Aside Marriage in 1911 Of First Cousins Rules Indiana Contract Is Invalid Under Laws Of Illinois. CHICAGO.—The 29-year-o’d mar riage of Arthur Spencer, 52 years old, and Mrs. Jane Spencer. 72. was annulled by Judge Grover C. N;e meyer in Superior court. The judge upheld Spencer’s contend on that he ar.d his wife are first cousins and that therefore their marriage m 1911 was invalid under Illinois law. The clinching ev.cence in the case was a will written by Mrs. Spencer m 1935 and introduced by Attorney Irving Eisenman, counsel for Spen cer. In this document, Mrs. Spencer said: “I leave my estate to my cousin, Arthur, to whom I entered into a marriage believing it valid.’’ The judge held this was proof that she knew of the close blood rela tionship. Read Letter of Uncle. Also introduced was a letter writ ten by Benjamin Supree of New York, who said he was an uncle of the Spencers and deplored the court controversy. Supree’s letter said he was a brother of the fathers of Mr. and Mrs. Spencer. (The Spen cers’ name was originally Supree.) Spencer asserted in his annulment suit, one of the most unusual ac tions ever filed in Cook county, that his father and Mrs. Spencer’a fa ther were brothers. “On the witness stand Mrs. Spen cer showed a lack of knowledge of the family relationship,” Judge Nie meyer said, “but it is hard to be lieve that a woman, who otherwise appeared so capable, could have that lack. Notwithstanding the long time this couple lived together as man and w’ife, there is no alterna tive under the statutes but to grant an annulment.” Violations of Illinois Laws. Mrs. Spencer denied that she was her husband's first cousin, but con tended that even if she was the court should not dissolve the mar riage because Spencer was an ac tive participant in violating the In diana state laws when they were married in Crown Point. At that time he w as 23 and she was 43. Although the marriage was in In diana, both the Spencers resi dents of Illinois, and, due to the comity of states, Illinois laws con trol Illinois residents even in out of state marriages. Mrs. Spencer’s petition for tempo rary maintenance was also dis missed by Judge Niemeyer. Spen cer said that under a separation agreement last June he had already paid her $27,000. Mrs. Spencer lives at 3501 Jackson boulevard and Spen cer, a retired clothing merchant, lives in the Stevens hotel. Faithful Dog Saves His Master, Hurt in Desert SYDNEY, N. S.
