‘Witch’ Slayer’s
Story is Upheld;
Given Freedom
G&vernor Orders Release of
Killer After Hearing
‘Evil Eye’ Story.
DENVER.—A tale about an “I;
*imn witch * who terrorized the pe<-
pie nf southwestern Colorado's big 1
mesa country with his “evil eye’’
has won freedom from prison for
'•2-year-old AiTmso Tafoya.
Gov. Ilalph L. Carr ordered Ta
foya’s immediate release from the
rtate penitentiary when he received
' onfirmation of the convict s story
that he killed the “Evil Eye Man”
m 1936 “because he used his pow
♦ rs to force my wife to make love
t«» him.”
“This man’s story is as strange
« s* any tale that was ever told of
the evil eye. sorcery and witch
♦ raft,” the governor said as he
commuted Tafoya’s 18-to-25-year
•entente for second-degree murder.
The governor said a reign of ter
ror began in the mesa country short
•V after a man named “Indian
Mike" Navarro rode in on a burro
t ack in 1929.
Navarro stopped at the Tafoya
home and announced: “I’m Indian
’" ke. Indian Mike has great pow
i FF.”
Mumbo-Jumbo Man.
To prove it, Indian Mike mum
• cd a few words over Mrs. Tafoya,
bo had been ill.
'The Indians and Spanish-Ameri
* .ms of that isolated country swear
t - <• woman was made well immedi
ately,” the governor said. “After
teat Indian Mike was a big man in
mesa country.”
Boasting loudly about his super
r; tural powers. Indian Mike lived
of! the fat of the land for several
•ears. Then people began to doubt
'hs prowess.
So Indian Mike announced that
c had put a hex on Tafoya’s sis
the governor’s story goes.
The girl died—anil Indian Mike
«>s feared again.”
The governor said he had gath
•*»d evidence that the Indian used
* i*-' reputation to force his attentions
women of the district.
“One night in 1936 Tafoya learned
that his wife was one of Indian
Mike's unwilling victims.” The gov
ernor said. “He took his hunting ri
fle and put five bullets in the man.”
Pleaded to Charge.
.Vfonso went into District court
at Durango and pleaded guilty. The
ludge sentenced him to from 18 to
25 years in prison.
For four years Tafoya was a
nodel convict. Then the governor,
aho had investigated his story for
many months, derided the man was
telling the truth.
“I freed him. lie said, “because
be shot to protect his home.”
Tafoya has gone back to his wife
? rtd three children in the mesas near
Bayfield. Now he is the big man
in the mesa country, because he end
ed the reign of terror by killing In
dian Mike.
The Indians and Spamsh-Ameri
vans near Bayfield have served no
nce they want no more “Indian
Mikes” with “evil eyes” in their
neighborhood.
Governor Carr said the citizens of
the area hanged a man—half Indian
and half Negro—who posed as a
witch shortlv after Indian Mike was
killed.
“Federal men cut him down be
lore he died and the people of Bay
field are sure he's still running,” the
governor said.
