The other morning I re ceived a letter from Pvt. Albert Pieper who wrote to give me a small idea of what the camp life of the soldier was like around the Alaska Highway. At the present time Pvt. Pieper is stationed somewhere in the Pacific, Part of his letter fol lows: “I know you don’t know who I am. but I thought I would write and tell you about a little pup tent life on the Alaska Highways. In the spring of 1942 we left Seattle, Wash ington. Four days later we arrived in Alaska. From there on for the next six months it was sleep on the ground in pup tents. A pup tent isn’t bad if you have one by yourself. But when you put your buddy in it with you. that is when you feel ’ike sardines in a can. If you go in head first. You can’t turn around without crawling all over your buddy. So you go in head first and back out feet first. Just like you would run a car in a garage. You can t turn around inside, i “Most of the time there is always a drizzel of rain. The biggest part of the pup tent sheds water like a sieve. Once your stuff got wet, you were lucky to get it all dry in a i month. Every day you worked in mud and water and that water up there is really cold. When fall sets in you go to bed like a wet dog, and in the morning you wake up and find the mud is frozen tight to your shoes and all the water puddles have ice on them. So the first thing J you do in the morning is jump into your wet clothes and shoes. It doesn’t make any difference what clothes you put on, they are all wet anyway. “The mosquitoes there in Wyan dotte are tame compared to those in 1 Alaska and the Yukon. The first : mosquitoes come out when there is still two feet of snow on the ground. What they live on I don’t know. In the last part of October and part of November we got tents big enough for six to stay in. “Ypu don’t think it is passible to wake up in the morning and find out it is anywhere from ten to twenty below” zero. Well, my friends, you get the general idea about what some of the kids are going through. So —don’t you think you could do a little more and buy some of those Bonds? Kids like that deserve all the help you ran give, and are depending on you, and you. not to let them down. Thanks for your letter, my friend, and lots of good luck. All you reed to do is read between the lines! (The place where the asterisks are.) It is not the policy of yours truly to slander anyone’s good name. Contrary to most opin ions—worse things can happen to you besides your name in “Straight Jive”. It occurs to me, now and then, (mostly then) that perhaps there are a “few peoples” who misinter pret the stuff my “wittle” ears pick up while floating through the halls of R.H.S. It is to them I say, “Don’t take things so seriously. They were never written to be taken in that sense.” • • • Now that my conscience is clear— I can write that letter to Santa Claus and can tell him I've been a ral good girl. Without fibbing! • • • Get set for a surprise! The “adult-student” committee on opening the youth center has met, proposed and decided! Final plans have been made and if everything goes according to schedule it should open about the second week in De cember. We re really getting a “good deal!” The schedule which will probably be adopted, allows us to be in the house either after school or in the evening, alternating each day. Sun day is the only day it will be closed. The “Snack Bar” will be open at all times with cokes and chips and the like, for a small amount of money. Smoking will be allowed in the lounge, upstairs, only. 0 0 0 Another plan hius been set up where as the students can volunteer for various duties in the house. Just what all these odd jobs are that we can do will be announced a lit tle later. Os course, this is just a rough idea of how things stand and maybe subject to change. But—isn't it a pleasant thought to think that a “pipe-dream” has finally been molded into a reality! Just think—no more “Juvenile Delinquents.” • • # Poor Mr. Gust . . .
