THE WYANDOTTE NEWS - HERALD PAGE EIGHT Whaley and Bozich Win Cold Cup Skating Races Two Skate Records Smashed; Cleveland Skaters Win Seven Races Out of Ten Five hundred fans braved a driv ing sleet to watch Eielen Whaley and Vince Bozick run away with the Annual Gold Cup ice skating championship races Sunday at the boat club basin in Wyandotte. Two state speed records were broken despite the hampering sleet and rough wind. Betty Mitchell of Winnipeg broke the half mile and mile mark. Her half mile time was 1:35.7. She did the mile in an even 3:28. Vince Bozich. Detroit skater, eas ily won five events and ran third in a sixth. He broke the finish tape in the 440. 880. three-quarter mile, the one and two mile and placed third in the 220 yard sprintJ Skaters representing Cleveland took seven individual titles out of ten entries. Eileen Whaley, the Gold Cup champion, and Betty Mitchell, in termediate star, both hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba. None of the Wyandote skaters were fast enough enough to take a race. Despite the blinding sleet there were no injuries and no bad spills. The Recreation Department made the arrangements for holding this year’s Gold Cup races in Wyandotte as has been the custom in other years. Having smarted their second round of games, the Comets are really proving true to their colors. Eugene Gurzenda was high point man with 19 points. As the game started, several min utes w’ere played before any score was made. Spigiel came through for the Comets, sinking his free throw on Yurmanovical’s foul. The latter, however, scored the first basket of the game, giving tA All Saint’s quintet a one pointl ead over the Comets. Grupcznski sank the first basket for the local lads but was quickly followed by Klotz, of All Saints. The comets then called time. Kowalewski came into the game replacing Spigiel. Hadley scored another basket for All Saints and follewed with a free throw’ on Bar cikowski’s foul making the score 7-3, All Saints leading. On a foul by Klotz, Gurzenda scored and soon followed with another long shot. Hadley, playing center for All Saints, gave his team another two points w’ith his basket. The score was tied when Gurzenda scored three free throws; one on Klotz’s foul and tw’o when Abdo fouled. The score was now 9-9. The last point was made when Koltz was gain penalized w’ith a foul; Gurzenda scoring, giving the Comets a one point bad over All Saints. The quarter ended 10-9, Mt. Carmel leading. COMETS HOLD LEAD With the beginning of the second nuarter, Spigiel retdrned for the Comets replacing Kow'alewski. Had ley was first to score in this quarter for All Saints, with Gurzenda re peating for the Comets. The score, howover, was soon tied since Martin scored on Gurzenda’s foul. With the score all tied up at 12-12 Urbanek was quick to sink another basket for the Comets. Martin gave All Saints another two points, but his was checked since Urbanek scored again, followed by Gdrzenda. With the score being 18-14, All Saints called time, hoping to check their opponents. It seemed as if they w’ould suoced when Captain Yurmanovical scored another two points for All Saints. Richard Ur banek, however, promptly came back with two more points for the Comets. The half ended with the Comets still leading, 20-18. Offensive Continued by Comets Gurzenda opened the second half with two succesive baskets All Saints again called time. Spigiel followed with another two points, but on his foul, Hadley scored a free throw. Koltz, having returned in the sec ond half, came through with still another two points making the score 26-19. Gurzenda came up with a basket and shortly after scored still another. Kowalewski replaced Grup czynski. On Sauve’s foul Urbanek scored a free throw and followed with a long shot making the score 33-20. Hadley came up with a free throw on Spigiel’s foul and a few seconds later he came up with still another two points. The quarter ended 33-35 as Hadley scored again for All Sains. AU Saints Held To Only Two Points On Abdoo’s foul, Grupczynski sank his two free throws and Gur zenda also came up with two more points. Klotz replaced Abdoo for the All Saints quintet. Grupcznski opened up with another two points Increasing the Comes lead 39-25. Klotz scored the only basket for All Saints in this quarter. After a time ou for All Saints, several substitu tions were made. Hebda deplaced Grupcznski for thq| Comets and Martin and Sauve came in for Ra telle and Yurmanovical of All Saints. Hebda gave the Comets an other point, sinking a free htrow on Klotz’s foul and making the score 40-27. Six points were made insuccesion when Spigiel, Urbanek, and*Gurzenda sank a basket each. With little time left to play the entire second sring was sent in for the Comets. They were, held scoreless and the game ended with I the Mt. Carmel lads winning an | other game, 46-27. Hadley, having played an out ! standing game for All Saints, was j high-point man for his team with 14 • points. The Comets play their next game Tuesday night acting as host to the boys from Ecorse as they meet St. j Francis Xavier for the second time. : The first game was taken by the j Comets, 40-18. The Irish have lost two games by two points and one by one point. The spirited Green and White trailed throughout the game until the end of the thfrd quarter, then they took the lead 28-27. Sacred Heart then trailed until the final minute when they went ahead to win 38-36. Capt. Carl Russell was high point man for the night scoring 20 of his team's 36 points. This is the highest number of points that any one Irish player has scored in two years. In the first quarter the accurate shooting guards of Sacred Heart made two baskets in the first three minutes. O’Brien then made the first Irish basket on a free throw. This was followed closely by a beau tiful pivot shot by Russell making the score 4-3. T}ie visitors then broke loose and Albertson, Muir and Bodary of Sacred Heart each made a basket. Bums then made a foul shot count and Russell again fol lowed this with a basket to make the score 10-6.. Burt of Sacred Heart was then fouled and made a free throw*. Albertson then made another basket and was fouled shooting. He made his free throw and the first quarter ended with Sacred Heart holding a stem lead of eight points, the score being 14-6. The second quarter moved slowly until after the automatic time-out. The Irish broke loose and Russell made tw*o long shots count while Bums made one making the score 14-12. Muir, of Sacred Heart, also mada two long shots while Bodary and Jones each scored on short shots to put the visitors out in front by 10 points—22-12. In the last sec onds, Russell was again fouled and made his free shot. As the half drew to a close, the Sacred Heart five led by nine points, 22-13. In the third quarter the Irish be gan pouring the heat on Sacred Heart. Russell made a basket soon after the jump and was closely fol lowed by Bums and again another by Russell, making the score 22-19. In the last three minutes, Sacred Heart boasted their score up five points on two baskets by Muir, the center, and a foul shot by Albert son. The Irish came through with a basket by Russell, one by Burns, and another by Mattern, making the score 27-26, Sacred Heart’s favor. In the last seconds, Russell again scored for the Irish on a basket from mid-floor to put the local lads ahead for the first time, 28-27. Soon after the fourth period started. Sacred Heart made two baskets to again take the lead 31-28. Russell again made another basket followed by Bums and one by Mat tern to give the Irish the lead 34- 31. Muir. Sacred Heart’s center then made a basket and was fouled shoot ing. He tied up the score in the last two minutes, 34-34. In the last minute and a half, Russell made the final Irish basket soon after Bums had been taken out on fouls and Fisher had been substituted. This basket put St. Pat’s ahead 36- 34. In the last minute, Muir again sunk another bucket to tie the Irish 36-36. He was fouled shooting and the visitors took the ball outside. The luck of the Irish failed to hold last Friday night in Detroit. Sacred Heart in the last minute of play scored the basket that won for them over St. Pats 38 to 36. Rus sell for the fighting Irish was high point man with 20 points and Red Bums followed him w’ith 12. The game would have been different if Bums had not left early in third quarter on personal fouls.
