Clubs desire for an experienced adult coach appears soon to be filled as three offers have been made after the fine New Baltimore show ing. Jimmy Thompson, Sr. Men’s Skating star, Mel Johnson, former skating star and Sam Angott U.A.W.A. coach all expressed a de sire to take over the kids for the coming year. The City Recreation Department is sponsoring the Skat ing Club although the club will function with its own officers but must have the Supt. of Recreation co-sign any expenditure of club moneys. mwMMaMnaaanMaaMMMMn Mv-OS Isos Vlnau otof FW [9 »^>f UTJTJTJTJTJTJTJTJTJTJTJ Cabbies In Fight For League Title Rack Up Seventh Straight Victory A fast-improving Firestone bas ketball team gave the Wyandotte Cab five a real struggle before bow ing 41-31 in a Recreation League game last Wednesday. Led by Roy Schwochow, who got 16 points, the Cabbies managed to stay ahead most of the game to rack up their seventh straight win and maintain their hold on first place in the league. Ed MeirKowitz got 10 points for the Cab w’hile Redmond and John, son got four points each. Every member of the cab five shared in the scoring. Each member of the Firestone quintette also broke into the scoring column led by Mike Sekmistrz. who garnered eight points while Melontoni got seven. Sekmis trz played with the cab team last year. The Cabbies will see plenty of ac tivity in the next three weeks as they go into the home stretch that will determine whether they will re tain the league title. Each Wed nesday and Thursday for the bal ance of the season the Cab five will be in action. The next six game* will really deide the championship. They have obtained the gym over at St. Josephs and on that large floor—what a battle should be seen. So you Basketball fans—the Mount Carmel-St. Pats game scheduled for February 20th will be played at St. Joseph’s gym. Come on over and see a hot game. Showing that the fighting Irish are real fighters—St. Pats last Tues day night came through in a whirl wind finish to win over All 6aints 36 to 30. Trailing at the half and being outplayed these fighting Irish w'on going away from the boys from Detroit. This gives St. Pats three straight wins. A great finish to you St. Pats. Over at New Baltimore last Sun day several of the local kids made good in a big way at the speed races. Dick Classon beat Dick Klein, state champion, in the 220 and 440. Ann MacDon ald placed second in the 220 and 440 Juvenile. Gerald Lezotte came in second in the 220 and 440 midget and Jack Murphy placed third in the midget 440. Fred Schrandt came in second and Jerald Bates third in the Juvenile 440. All in all the local kids showed up swell. In the Sharpies Research Bowl ing League Dunn still holds the high average over Holdren. Dunn is in the top spot with an average of 165. Holdren in the second place has a 162. Team number three has a seen game lead over number five, winning 52 games and losing 35. The high single game is still tied with Self and Davidson holding the lead with a game of 265. The high two games is held by Davidson with a nice 476. Team number six holds the lead in the team high single game with 1092. In the team high series number one is leading with a 3060. You sport fans—get ready for that old timers hockey game. The both teams have lined up some of the cream of the hockey field of a cen tury or so ago. Whiz-bang Miller and his bunch of wheel chair fugi tives are doing their best to get enough of that energy business to be able to stand on their own feet. The vitamin business has been go ing pretty good as these old guys are buying everything in sight, to help them in their hour of need. I like that last part—their hour of need—these guys are just so badly crippled up it will be like taking candy from a small child for my gang to get out and trim that well known pair of pants off of them. This gang I have lined up are cer tainly the tops—the best there is around these parts, pardner. The date will be announced in next Mon day’s News-Herald. Watch for it! The Mount Carmel Ushers Bowl ing League is in one swell three cor nered race. At present the Lions are leading the Tigers by one game and the Wolfs are back of the lead ers by only two games. Friars, a colored aggregation and one of the leading teams in Detroit, were given a real tussle by the locals who lost the game In the final three minutes. At that point the Cabbies trailed 30-29 and Cooney Zulewski, the locals’ star guard, was banished from the game on personal fouls. Playing the final minutes without Zulewski and also the other start ing guard, Bob Smith, who did not play because of an Injured leg, the locals could not cope with the speedy colored team who rallied to sew up the game. Up to that point, the cabbies sparked by Row Schwochow, gave the spectators their money’s worth as they matched Friars almost bas ket for basket. Schwochow led both teams in scoring 16 points, while Willie King bagged 12 markers to lead Friars. Efforts are being made to sched ule a game between the cabbies and Mansfield Clothes, coached by Cincy Sachs and conceded to be the out standing team in Detroit with a record of 25 wins in 28 games. The Ale boys defeated the locals but it was a honey of a battle all the way through. The game was lost by the Cabbies in the last three minutes of play and up until then it was any one's game. Women’s Team Sets Bowling Record Bolduc Decorators team bowled a record game in the Ladies League contests at Kline’s Recreation, Trenton, Friday night. The five-woman team rolled 956 to set an all-time high for team competition at the alley. The team has a season average of 745 and holds first place in the Trenton ladies league.
