Shuryan Awarded, Purple Heart
for Wounds Received on Luzon
WITH THE 43RD INPANTRY

ON LUZON. P. L Private First
Class Alfred A. Shuryan, son of
Frank Shuryan, 4654 Somheil court,
has been awarded the Purple Heart
for wounds received in combat
against the Japanese oi. Luzon dur
ing the opening phase of the cam
paign at Lingayen gulf.
Private Shuryan is an infantry
man in the 43rd “Winged Victory"
Division.
During their 30 months overseas,
the 43rd Division has participated
in four campaigns; Guadalcanal.
Northern Bolomons, New Guinea
and Luzon.

S Sgt. Fred C. Smith, 19, radio
operator and gunner in an Italian
based Liberator group, has been
awarded the air medal for meritor
ious achievement in aerial flight
while participating in sustained op
erations against the enemy it was
announced by Fifteenth AAF head
quarters.
His parents, Mr- and Mrs. Donald
Crooks, reside at 58 Forest, River
Rouge. S/Sgt. Smith has been over
seas since Nov. 14 and has flown
missions over such targets Mun
ich, Vienna, Linz, Brux and Blech
hammer.

communications for the U. S. Sev
enth Army in General Jacob L.
Devers’ 6th Army Group.
Veterans of D-Day landings at
Salerno and Anzio in Italy in
Southern France, these communi
cations experts kow what it means
to work hard and move fast.
“Men of the battalion have met
every demand on skill and energy,”
said Lt. Col. Arthur C. Hill, 39
Freeman street, Aubumdale, Mass.,
commanding officer. “In a recent
6-weeks period, when troop move
ment called for extra effort, our
construction companies laid 554
miles of telephone cable, 597 miles
of field wire, and took over and
rehabilitated 2,145 miles of French
wire.”
Essentially a wire construction
battalion, the 57th is composed ba
sically of two signal construction
companies, an operations company,
ad a headquarters company. At
tached to the battalion to insure
full communications coverage are
signal photo, signal pigeon, and ra
dio monitoring detachments.
> The 57th Signal Battalion began
overseas service in February, 143,
at Oran, N. Africa. Its members,
under shelling and bombing at An
zio, improvised plows to bury their
wire, and thus improved communi
cations. The battalion was awarded
the Fifth Army Plaque and Clasp
in the Italian campaigns. Courage
of its personnel is attested by two
Silver Stars, six Bronze Star Med
als and 13 Soldier’s Medals.

Former National
Guard Unit Witl}
Army in Germany
Four Wyandotte men, members
of a former Michigan National
Guard unit from Detroit, activated
as an Army unit, April 7, 1941, are
with a group paving the advance
for Seventh Army Infantry.
They are Pfc. Thomas C. Sobo
cinski, 12921 Oakdale; Cpl. John R.
O’Sullivan, 12837 Oakdale; Sgt.
Leonard J. Dole. Sycamore,
Cpl. Ned G. Mitchell, 1452 Elm.
Target for the 155 mm. howitzers
of the 182nd Field Artillery Bat
talion, a medium artillery unit sup
porting Seventh Army troops in
General J. L. Devers’ Sixth Arqiy
group, was the main fortress of the
Maginot Line west of Bitche. These
howitzers fired 73 armor-piercing
shells, scoring 26 direct hits on the
face of the fort and 19 on the top.
“During the push to the Moselle
River, the battalion made a 110-
mile march, carrying infantrymen
forward in trucks,’’ said L*. Col.
R. H Moore, Detroit, battalion com
mander. “We by-passed many Ger
man pockets as we followed the
spearhead,, sometimes coming with
in 1,500 yards of enemy outposts.’’
